EPISODE 22 -- THE SHOWDOWN

SOMERSET EPISODE 22
DRtv airdate: August 12, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Cleybank Corporation

The first scene is a direct pickup from Monday’s episode, as Jack is confronting George at the Cleybank Corporation. Jack has gone there to have it out with George over the newspaper that was sent to Susannah.

GEORGE
Why, yes. I know who Susannah Lucas is. (Raises voice) She’s the one who nearly killed my son!

JACK
And your own son even admitted his culpability in it. He even said that he wasn’t really watching the road, that he was distracted. So you want to still take it out on Susannah.

GEORGE
You’re… you’re DAMN right I do! She shouldn’t get off scot-free for what she did!

JACK
Well, just what DID she do? George, she took a breathalyzer test and she was sober. She talked to the police at the scene, and they determined she wasn’t at fault.

GEORGE
Is it my fault Scott Garfield runs a lackluster department?

JACK
Oh, for cripes sake…

Jack turns around and walks toward the door. Then he whirls around.

JACK
You have an excuse for everything, don’t you? Well, there is no excuse for what you did last night.

GEORGE
And just what did I do?

Jack raises his voice, furious.

JACK
You went too far, that’s what you did!

Jack pauses.

JACK
You know, George, I remember when you wanted someone to knuckle under and drop out of a business deal once.

GEORGE
That’s happened a lot to me, Jack. You too, you know that.

JACK
And yet I’ve heard the horror stories. One person was an animal lover. They didn’t like the terms you were asking them to accept, so they backed out of the deal.

GEORGE
I don’t recall that one. I have business deals breaking apart and coming together every day.

JACK
True… but not every business deal ends with you putting a dead cat on that person’s doorstep. Luckily it wasn’t theirs. Your lackey found a cat who had been hit at the side of the road. That cat made its way to your potential client’s doorstep.

George draws closer to Jack, eyebrows furrowing.

GEORGE
And just what the hell are you implying?

JACK
Well, George… other families use horses’ heads. You could at least upgrade.

George lunges briefly at Jack.

GEORGE
Why, you son of a…

Jack jumps back and steadies George.

JACK
Ahh, struck a nerve, didn’t I? You DO take it personal.

George gets right in Jack’s face as the music rises in intensity. The picture fades to black.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion of Somerset is presented today by Sure, the full-strength deodorant that leaves you feeling dry all day. We’re Sure!

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Cleybank Corporation

Upon the return from commercial, the scene picks right back up. A few dark piano notes play on audio before the picture immediately cuts in.

JACK
George, when someone wrongs you, heaven help them. When Susannah swerves to avoid hitting your son, it was as bad as her actually hitting him. Therefore you want revenge.

GEORGE
Oh come on. I have heard enough.

George turns to walk away, but Jack isn’t having any of it.

JACK
(Raises voice) Not quite! I’m not finished with you yet, you son of a…

George turns around.

GEORGE
Oh, finish that thought, please. I’ve been called worse before.

JACK
And no doubt by your ex-wife. Or has your daughter Emily chimed in? I seem to recall there is a reason why she stays in New York and doesn’t come visit.

GEORGE
NOW who wants to make it personal?

JACK
Well, YOU certainly did.

GEORGE
Personal, huh? I’ll give you personal.

George comes up to Jack, lowers his voice and confronts Jack about his past transgressions.

GEORGE
Tell that to all the Delaney Brands employees you sold down the river when you sold the company to that international firm. You broke the spirit of Somerset.

JACK
And I don’t deny it was a bad business deal in the end. George, you may notice Robert Delaney even said I was in a no-win situation. I even apologized to the citizens of Somerset.

For dramatic effect, Jack pauses as the piano music simmers underneath the scene.

JACK
Then again, you don’t read the Register, you’re only concerned with what goes on in Kansas City. Old news, in fact.

GEORGE
And why the hell would I care about something that happened there?

JACK
If it rattles someone’s cage and makes them fidgety and nervous, you just love to see that.

George has clearly had enough.

GEORGE
That’s it. (Turns to go back to the desk) You’ve said your peace.

JACK
You look at me when you’re talking! Our feud is between us. I’ll be goddamned if you involve anyone from my company in it. Now I can’t prove this was your doing, but considering Zachary’s fresh off a motorcycle accident…

GEORGE
See yourself out.

Jack walks over by the desk as George looks out the window. Jack leans in so George can see his face.

JACK
Now, George… keep this up and maybe Zachary will be spending his free time finding the first flight out of Somerset.

He turns to go toward the door, speaking as he walks.

JACK
Then maybe that Moore mansion will be deserted once again. Maybe you and Fenwick can play shuffleboard on the back terrace.

Jack opens the door and turns to George.

JACK
Or maybe Fenwick will win a game of backgammon and you’ll push him off the terrace.

Jack smiles, walks out and quietly shuts the door.

By now George is visibly shaken. He goes back to his desk and sits in the swivel chair. He looks out at Somerset. He’s going to turn and sweep everything off his desk, but he thinks better.

GEORGE
No, I’ll spend the better part of the afternoon getting my notes back in order. I better not.

George pauses.

GEORGE
I’ll be damned if you win this round, Jack. Not a chance in hell.

Sinister music plays as the extended scene fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

(We see “Point Palace” title card)

College was never this good. An old favorite is resurrected as Point Palace joins the daytime lineup. Point Palace, weekdays.

(We see “Somerset” title card with mid-show music)

BILL WOLFF
We'll return with the second half of Somerset following station identification.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

BILL WOLFF
The second half of Somerset is brought to you today by Oxydol, the detergent that bleaches as it washes. For sparkling whites!

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

The outside of the hospital is shown, and we dissolve inside to the nurses’ station.

At Somerset Hospital, Victoria is on duty when Taylor comes up and shuffles some charts into the doctors’ cubicles.

TAYLOR
That was fun last night. We have to do this more often.

VICTORIA
Yeah, but like Alana said… I’d be content with us going out on Fridays or something… I mean, don’t get me wrong! It was a lot of fun!

TAYLOR
I hear you. It was rough doing back-to-back nights at the bar and coming in here to do our shifts. Luckily we got a lot of sleep last night.

VICTORIA
Thanks for letting me crash at your place.

TAYLOR
No problem.

Taylor leans her arms on the desk and watches as Victoria is filling out a chart.

TAYLOR
Everything OK at the house?

Victoria turns and laughs, shrugging off Taylor’s inquisitive mind.

VICTORIA
Oh, come on. Everything’s fine. It’s just that I’m not the drinking and driving type.

TAYLOR
Since when are any of us?

VICTORIA
Well, it kind of hit home a few years ago that it wasn’t the smartest thing to do. Especially after Scott’s wife got killed in that car crash. So if I’m going to drink, I’m going to make sure I stay someplace where I can be sober later.

TAYLOR
Smart thinking. You sure there isn’t more to it?

VICTORIA
No! Why would there be?

TAYLOR
You just seem like you want to be a bit more independent, that’s all.

VICTORIA
Well, I HAVE been thinking about what it’d be like to live on my own, if that’s what you’re wondering.

TAYLOR
Nice. About time you cut the pasta strings. (Laughing)

The phone buzzes.

TAYLOR
I’ll get that… (picks up phone) Fourth floor, Nurse Kendrick?

As Taylor is answering the phone, Victoria sees Zachary coming out of his therapy session. He smiles and comes over.

Victoria has a clipboard and she’s clasping it tightly to her, trying not too hard to be nervous.

VICTORIA
Hey, stranger! I haven’t seen you in a long time.

ZACHARY
I know. What’s it been - hours? (Laughs) Thank you for keeping me company last night til my friends got there.

VICTORIA
No problem. You know, you broke a record last night.

ZACHARY
I’m afraid to ask. What did I do?

VICTORIA
Well, I’ve never had a guy buy me two drinks before.

ZACHARY
So my friends were a little late. I had to do a little something to kill the time. (Smiles) Besides, the company was more than fun.

Victoria points down at Zachary’s walking boot.

VICTORIA
How’s the ankle?

ZACHARY
I’ll be fine. I’ll be hobbling around for another several weeks, but everything’s going to be good.

Zachary and Victoria almost talk at the same time.

ZACHARY
Say, about last night…

VICTORIA
(Quick reply) Yeah?

The two laugh, and Zachary continues talking.

ZACHARY
I can’t believe I’m going to say this… but would you do me the honor of buying you another drink, this time just the two of us?

Victoria is surprised by Zachary’s proposal, and the music builds as the camera focuses on Victoria’s face.

DISSOLVE TO -- Giovanni’s

Rose is wiping down the bar as the morning progresses in Somerset and the doors have just opened for business. Nick comes in with a few folders in his hand and heads straight for Rose.

Rose leans in to kiss Nick on the cheek.

ROSE
Hey, Nick! Welcome! Cocktail?

NICK
I’d looooove one, Rose, but I’ll just take a pop instead.

ROSE
You got it. (Pauses) Are you on duty or something? I’ve seen you drink when you have clients in here.

NICK
I’m waiting for an appointment. (He flashes a bottle of pills) And I’m still taking medication.

ROSE
Yes, I heard. Tori told me you were in the hospital earlier this week?

NICK
Tori’s very perceptive. I was hospitalized overnight. Small concussion, nothing major. I did something stupid – I fell out of bed.

ROSE
Nick, that’s terrible! You must have packed quite a wallop.

NICK
No, I’m afraid the nightstand got the better of me. (Laughs) Come to think of it, the floor wasn’t too ginger with me either.

ROSE
Well, next time, do me a favor and strap yourself in.

NICK
I never thought I’d have to wear seatbelts to bed, but I’ll start thinking about it.

Nick sees Mike coming in the door.

NICK
Oops, my 10:30 is here.

ROSE
(Noticing Mike) Oh, Mike is your 10:30 appointment? Good! Are you guys going to eat?

NICK
Probably not this early, but if you want to make up a basket of pasta chips to munch on or something…

ROSE
That I can do. I’ll be right back.

Nick gets up from the bar and gingerly walks over to the table, where Mike has set his stuff down and spread it out. Mike sticks out his fist to bump fists with Nick.

MIKE
Hey there. You getting around all right?

NICK
Trying to, at least. Alana was a great help to me when we left the hospital.

MIKE
Yeah, she filled me in. Alana told me the nurses didn’t let her live it down. She’s not one to take a lot of good-natured ribbing from people, so I don’t know how bad it’s affecting her.

Nick waves his hand at Mike.

NICK
I hope you know there’s nothing between the two of us. We’re just trying to re-establish our friendship after all this time we’ve spent sulking, but I’m not standing in the way of your efforts.

MIKE
Oh, I know that. I’ve known that for a while. In fact, I’m a little more secure in my feelings after last night.

NICK
What happened while I was recuperating from (pointing at his head) THIS?

MIKE
Well… I got the pleasure of kissing Alana – albeit briefly – when I celebrated my job promotion yesterday.

NICK
Vickery finally gave you the investigative gig?

MIKE
Yup. I think he realized I was spinning my wheels at the metro desk.

NICK
Well, put ‘er there, pal! (High-fives Mike) Now we can dish the secrets of Somerset together.

The two laugh as the scene draws to a close and the picture fades to black with music playing in the background.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

Back at the hospital, Victoria has said goodbye to Zachary and come back to the nurses’ desk. For some reason, she looks like she’s still in shock.

Taylor notices this as she walks up, and she quizzes Victoria about the situation.

TAYLOR
Hey. How’d your meeting with Zachary go?

VICTORIA
Okay, I guess.

TAYLOR
Just okay? Girlfriend, spill it.

VICTORIA
Well… he asked me out for another drink.

Taylor nods, as if she’s heard this story before.

TAYLOR
Oh. Well, I know how that turned out. I can imagine you giving the 100th version of your speech that you’re a career girl, how you can’t spare taking the time away to have some fun.

VICTORIA
(Smiles) Taylor…

TAYLOR
You’re chained to your nurses station here, you work long hours…

VICTORIA
Taylor…

TAYLOR
I can’t tell you how many times you’ve turned away eligible guys…

VICTORIA
Taylor, whoa! It didn’t work that way this time. (Smiles) I said yes.

Taylor gets a look of surprise on her face as Victoria can’t believe what she did.

DISSOLVE TO -- Cleybank Corporation

George is in his office as Zachary approaches the door. Zachary stops short of entering, as he can hear George on the phone.

GEORGE
Just wanted to tell you that you did a good job… TOO good, in fact. (Pauses) No, she suspected it was me and as a result I got a visit from Jack. (Pauses) Oh, he’s going to ratchet the stakes up a bit.

Zachary nods his head as if he’s heard his dad do stuff like this before.

GEORGE
Well, if he wants to get down and dirty, maybe I’ll start tinkering with the downtown properties a bit. Take Giovanni’s.

That gets Zachary’s attention, and he turns toward the door, eyes widened.

GEORGE
What I could do to that place would make The Godfather look tame.

The music plays as Zachary realizes he has an interest in Victoria… but it clashes with his dad’s business plans.

He leans against the wall and pretends to bash his head into it repeatedly, as the music plays and the picture fades to black.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Fade in on the closing credits for Somerset as the theme plays.

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Riverboat Club

The fifth week of Somerset begins back at The Riverboat Club, where Victoria has just gotten a drink from Zachary.

VICTORIA
Excuse me, ladies. Now it’s my turn to leave the table for a bit.

Smiling at Zachary, she gets up and leaves the table. She walks in Zachary’s direction as Alana returns.

ALANA
You girls having fun watching the show unfold?

TAYLOR
Man, Alana, what was that all about? I swear you must have kissed him for more than two seconds. (Winks) That’s a record for you.

ALANA
The kiss… oh, I was congratulating Mike. He’s the Register’s new investigative reporter.

TAYLOR
Nice!

Taylor flashes thumbs up to Mike, who is shown looking in Taylor’s direction and flashing a thumb himself. She turns back to Alana.

TAYLOR
So you two weren’t making any romantic plans?

ALANA
Hardly. (She snickers) He’ll be busy at his new job. He won’t have time for people like myself.

TAYLOR
You might be surprised. Based on what I just saw there, I think there’s definitely a spark about to ignite.

Alana turns around and playfully sasses Taylor.

ALANA
You watch it, Missy. I can reduce you to bedpan duty, you know. (Laughs)

TAYLOR
Like you’d ever do that.

Alana sips from her beer glass and laughs again.

ALANA
Don't tempt me.

Alana and Taylor are laughing as the picture fades to black, all the while as the bar music is playing in the background.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion of Somerset is presented today by Coast, the invigorating deodorant soap that’s the eye opener! Available in mountain scent and regular.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Riverboat Club

We cut to the bar area, where Zachary is sitting waiting for his friends as Victoria approaches him.

VICTORIA
Thanks for the drink… how did you know that’s what I liked?

ZACHARY
This would be your… second one?

Victoria has a sheepish look on her face as she grins.

VICTORIA
You’re very perceptive. (Looks down) You’re also very daring. Didn’t orthopedics say not to walk around so much on that foot?

ZACHARY
Trust me, I’m not moving. I don’t want to jeopardize my health any worse than I did following that accident. I have my first rehab session in a couple days and I’m going to be a good boy.

VICTORIA
Well, you’ve come to the right place. You following the nurses around for a little TLC or something?

ZACHARY
I wish. I’m here to meet a couple friends of mine. Care to keep me company while I wait?

Victoria thinks it over and looks at her table, as a couple nurses are smiling in her direction.

VICTORIA
What the heck. (Climbs onto a chair) Sure, count me in.

ZACHARY
Maybe I could get to know you better.

VICTORIA
One move at a time, Zachary. One move at a time. (Smiles)

Zachary is smiling as Victoria takes a sip of her drink. The music builds in intensity -- and then it turns a bit eerie.

DISSOLVE TO -- Susannah’s house

We see Susannah in her darkened bedroom. She is asleep but once again, it is obvious that she’s having some sort of nightmare. The tune “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence is playing in the background, just as it was in her other nightmare.

In a cold sweat, Susannah stifles a scream upon awakening, quickly silencing herself once she sees where she is. She looks at the clock and, resigned to a night of interrupted sleep, lies back on the bed before shutting her eyes.

The eerie music continues as the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

(We see “A Beautiful Family” title card)

An exciting love story begins… but it is not what you think. Be sure to watch A Beautiful Family, weekdays.

(We see “Somerset” title card with mid-show music)

BILL WOLFF
The second half of Somerset is presented today by Camay, the soap that feels you washed your face in cold cream.

We'll return with more of Somerset following station identification.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Susannah’s house

In her bedroom the next morning, Susannah is finishing getting dressed. She managed to get a decent night’s rest, but the memory still lingers.

As she is adjusting her earrings, the phone rings.

SUSANNAH
It figures that I’d put these in… (removes earring to answer the phone) Hello?

We see a chair swivel around and Sam is shown. We also see Lahoma in the background.

SAM
Hey, Susie. Did you guys have fun last night?

SUSANNAH
Oh hey Dad… yeah, Joanne and a couple other women went to Giovanni’s for a couple drinks and then we went our separate ways for the night. I was back here by 10.

SAM
Yeah, that was probably a good idea with work the next day…

SUSANNAH
Hey, I’m sorry I didn’t call last night, but when I got in there was something waiting for me. I guess you could call it a welcome present.

SAM
What did Stan and Teri do, send you a basket of flowers or something?

SUSANNAH
Please. I wish it were that pleasant. There was a newspaper waiting for me.

SAM
Come on. The Register can’t have gotten that bad in the time we‘ve been away from Somerset.

SUSANNAH
Very funny, Dad. No… it was a Kansas City Star.

Sam’s face turns serious. Obviously he knows what is going on too.

SAM
What the hell… who knows about your time in Kansas City?

SUSANNAH
I can think of one person who might want to do a bit of research.

SAM
Hey, don’t let it get you down. You just keep doing your work and being a good employee at Martin. It’s just your second day, but break a leg, all right?

SUSANNAH
I don’t think that will be a problem. (Checks watch) I’m going to get to the office early and take care of some paperwork. But I will call you guys tonight.

SAM
Okay, don’t let me stop you. Have a good day, honey.

SUSANNAH
You too. I love you, Dad.

SAM
Mom loves you too. Take care.

As Sam puts down the phone, Lahoma notices something isn’t right with him.

LAHOMA
Is everything okay? Sam, honey, you all right?

SAM
Oh… yes, dear, I’m fine. However, I’m afraid Susie might not be if this keeps up.

LAHOMA
What’s going on?

SAM
I’ll tell you after I’m done here. (Picks up phone)

CUT TO -- Martin Enterprises

Joanne is just off the elevator, setting her purse down, when the phone rings. Rather than put her headphone on, she picks the phone up directly.

JOANNE
Good morning, Martin Enterprises, this is Joanne?

SAM
Hey Joanne, Sam Lucas.

JOANNE
Mr. Lucas! Good morning to you too. I don’t think Susannah’s in yet if you’re looking for her…

SAM
Actually… I talked with Susannah. I was looking for Jack.

JOANNE
Now that I can help you with. I KNOW he’s here, even though I just got here myself. Hold on a second.

CUT TO -- Jack’s office

Jack is looking at a couple documents when the phone buzzes. He picks up the line.

JACK
Yes, Joanne?... Oh, good, put him on. (Pause) What did Susannah do, complain to you about what a slave driver I am?

SAM
Well, I wish it were that simple. Susannah got a special delivery last night.

JACK
What type of delivery? (Pause… his face darkens) Son of a bitch.

SAM
My sentiments exactly. Jack, George Cleypool is the only one who could have known about Susannah.

JACK
Well, I’m glad I knew from before… and it wouldn’t have impacted my mind on Susannah.

SAM
Jack, I don’t want to appear like I’m fighting Susie’s battles, but this is too much.

JACK
I’m glad you called me. Sometimes you have to fight a little unfair. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll take care of this and Susannah won’t have to know a thing.

SAM
Thank you, Jack. Just so you know, I didn’t call to ask for a favor.

JACK
Consider it a little payback for all the time you spent mentoring me. (Pause) OK, Sam. Have a good day.

Jack puts down the phone, gathers his jacket and heads into the outer office.

JACK
By the way, Joanne, how was the night at the bar with the ladies?

JOANNE:
Not bad. We’re all shut-ins, you know. We have to be home by 8. (Laughs) Just kidding. We were out until about 9:30.

JACK
Well, all right! It’s good to see all of you unwinding. I’ve got a special errand I need to run, so if anyone wonders where I am…

JOANNE
I’ll just tell them you’re out.

JACK
Good. I promise I’ll be back shortly.

JOANNE
OK, I’ll hold down the fort while you’re gone. (Phone buzzes) Speaking of that…

Light music plays as Joanne says goodbye to Jack and turns back to her desk. She picks up a phone call as the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Petterino house

In the Petterino kitchen, Giovanni is enjoying a cup of coffee as Rose is sitting at the kitchen table looking at the previous day’s Register. It contains a story Mike wrote about the X Project.

ROSE
Interesting. Do you really think Jack’s project is going to take off?

GIOVANNI
I’ll stake my life on it. It’s his preferito progetto -- you know, his life’s work. He wants to make sure everything’s perfect on it.

ROSE
And you?

GIOVANNI
I’d love nothing more than to see parts of downtown revitalized. Do you realize how much more business Giovanni’s could get with a revitalized downtown? Bernard’s? The Riverboat Club? The Finial? All of Somerset could be impacted by this.

ROSE
Our restaurant is doing very well. For that we should be grateful.

GIOVANNI
Oh, I’m not saying I’m not grateful. We’ve endured downturns in our industry before.

Before Giovanni can finish that thought, Annabella comes downstairs from her bedroom. She turns the corner and heads toward the kitchen, smiling when she sees Giovanni and Rose.

ANNABELLA
Morning, Mom… Dad… (kisses both)

GIOVANNI
Bella figlia, good morning! How was your date last night?

Annabella gets a look on her face as if to say “unbelievable” and shoots it back at Giovanni.

ANNABELLA
Dad… what did I tell you before this?

GIOVANNI
(Smiles) Always knew I could get a rise out of you, sweetheart.

ROSE
Giovanni, honey, you know better than that… (turns to Annabella) Now let me ask you. How was last night, dear?

ANNABELLA
A lot of fun! Scott and I played some pool, and I haven’t lost my touch there.

GIOVANNI
I’ll believe that. You’ve hustled me out of a few dollars in my lifetime.

ANNABELLA
I actually thought my game would be a little rusty. I haven’t played in a few months. But we played a few games, had a couple drinks, had fun getting acquainted again…

ROSE
Scott really appreciates your friendship, you know. He leaned heavily on all of us when Julia died a few years ago.

ANNABELLA
I know. And it broke my heart to see him in such pain. Julia’s car crash shook us all up.

ROSE
Well, all you two have to do is just stay friends. Just because you’re female and he’s a guy doesn’t mean you have to hook up.

Annabella looks a little surprised at what Rose just said.

ANNABELLA
Mother! How do you know that expression?

ROSE
In my day, honey, they called it a one-night stand. (Breaks out in laughter)

ANNABELLA
I don’t think that’s what they called it, but I like the fact we’re talking about it and you’re not mad at me because we‘re just friends.

GIOVANNI
Not a chance, honey. We could never be mad at you.

Annabella looks around the kitchen as she grabs a glass of milk.

ANNABELLA
I thought Tori would be here… did she have to work this morning?

GIOVANNI
Yes, she did. But she did the smart thing… I think she took a change of clothes and everything and crashed at a friend’s house last night. Taylor?

ANNABELLA
Ah yes, Taylor Kendrick. I know who she is. She’s a great person.

ROSE
Perhaps we could fix Scott up with Taylor?

Annabella rolls her eyes.

ANNABELLA
Please, Mom. Not a chance. She‘s even younger than I am and Scott is too straight-laced for Taylor’s tastes. (Laughs) Come to think of it, so am I.

Rose and Giovanni laugh as Annabella shakes her head. Light music plays as the scene changes, but once we see where the scene is it turns more sinister.

CUT TO -- Cleybank Corporation

Jack is coming in through the door to George‘s office. Denise Butterfield, George’s secretary, is at the front desk.

DENISE
Hi, can I help you?

JACK
I’m here to see George.

DENISE
(Reaches for the phone) I’ll check and see if he’s…

Jack brushes right past her.

JACK
Never mind, I’ll check on him myself.

DENISE
Sir, you can’t go back…

Jack throws open the door to George’s office, momentarily startling George.

DENISE
I’m sorry, sir, he just barged right past me.

GEORGE
That’s all right, Denise. You may go.

DENISE
Thank you.

Denise scurries outside the door as Jack comes in, takes the door and slams it shut.

JACK
You insufferable bastard.

GEORGE
Well, I can see this isn’t a social call as always! (Comes out from behind desk) To what do I owe this pleasure visit?

JACK
Shall I tell you to cram the pleasantries or would you like to experience me doing it myself?

GEORGE
Like I said, obviously you’re not in a socializing mood.

JACK
Cut the crap, George. When are you going to learn you can’t get what you want by intimidating others?

GEORGE
What do you mean?

JACK
Does the name Susannah Lucas ring a bell?

George intently looks at Jack as dark music plays to lead into the commercial.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Petterino household

It is early evening in Somerset as the last episode of the fourth week opens up.

Annabella is at the kitchen table, looking at herself in a compact mirror as we hear a knock on the door. Annabella rises from the chair and opens the door to find Scott standing there.

SCOTT
Evening, my dear.

Annabella hugs Scott tightly and kisses him on the cheek.

ANNABELLA
Buongiorno, my dear. You’re early! Come on in and have a seat. Just checking myself out in the mirror.

SCOTT
Now I find that hard to believe.

Annabella has her powder puff out when she looks at Scott a little crazily.

ANNABELLA
What do you find hard to believe?

SCOTT
That a model would need to check her face before going out…

Annabella laughs and raises a finger of caution at Scott.

ANNABELLA
Uh uh, Scott. Don’t even go there… you know I’m a model overseas but here I’m just Annabella Petterino, Rose and Giovanni’s daughter.

Scott feigns shock.

SCOTT
Oh sorry! I plumb forgot my manners.

ANNABELLA
I’ll just bet you did. I’ll give you a heads up that my pool skills might be a little rusty. I haven’t had much of a chance to play lately.

SCOTT
Don’t tell me they don’t have pool tables over in Venice.

ANNABELLA
They do, but when you’re on shoots like mine the first thing you want to do is go back to the hotel and crash.

SCOTT
Well, remember. Here you’re Annabella, Giovanni’s daughter.

ANNABELLA
Quite right.

She snaps her compact shut, places it in her purse and smiles.

ANNABELLA
By the way, we might run into Victoria this evening.

SCOTT
Really? Is she out with her friends?

ANNABELLA
A few nurses – Taylor, Alana, and a couple others – decided to have another girls’ night out since they had so much fun the other time.

SCOTT
It seems they were just out last night, weren’t they? Ah, to be young once.

ANNABELLA
Speak for yourself. (Flips her hair back) I’ve still got it.

Scott laughs hysterically.

SCOTT
You’re damn right you do. Whatever that is.

Scott and Annabella share a warm smile as they reconnect their friendship. The picture fades to black.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

The first part of Somerset is presented today by the new Swiffer sweeper, the floor cleaner that reaches places other household cleaners can’t touch.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Petterino house

The scene briefly switches back to the Petterino kitchen, as Scott and Annabella are chatting for a bit before heading out.

SCOTT
We could have invited Tori along with us.

ANNABELLA
I told her to stop on in, but she wanted to give us privacy. I don’t know why.

SCOTT
Imagine that. (Rolls eyes) Let’s go, shall we?

Scott puts a hand on Annabella’s shoulder and gently guides her toward the door; we briefly cut to Scott’s car, where the two continue their conversation.

ANNABELLA
I got a big surprise today. I found out my sister has huge issues with her self-esteem and how she looks.

SCOTT
I’ve noticed it too, Annabella. But Rose thinks it’s nothing major. She thinks that Tori’s spent so much time at the hospital that she doesn’t know how to react if a guy is interested in her.

ANNABELLA
Well, duh! Get a name, get a number, and call! Right? Besides, it isn't as if my sister hasn't dated before. She's just been so hung up on completing the nursing program...

SCOTT
Well, maybe. (Pauses) Guess it depends on who it is. (Starts car) Let’s go. I got a game of pool to win.

ANNABELLA
You just hope you win… (Laughs)

Light music plays as Annabella and Scott drive off.

DISSOLVE TO -- Martin Enterprises

Susannah is looking at a file folder and doing a bit of research online about one of Jack’s businesses, but she is interrupted by a knock on the door from Joanne.

JOANNE
What are you still doing here? It’s quitting time, Susannah.

SUSANNAH
Hey, Joanne, what’s going on? (Shuts file) You’re right, this file can wait.

JOANNE
You’re damn straight. A couple of us wondered if we could take Martin Enterprises’ newest employee out for a drink. Did you want to come?

Susannah doesn’t need any time to think it over.

SUSANNAH
Sure! I could use a break from the humdrum life I’ve had lately. Let me close this file (phone buzzes) and take this quick call.

JOANNE
Did you want me to get this?

SUSANNAH
Naa, it’s my cell. I bet I know who it is.

Susannah answers the phone.

SUSANNAH
Good evening, Susannah Lucas?

The caller is Sam on the other end of the line, calling from Oklahoma City. Sam is in his office finishing up paperwork on a case. He turns to face the window.

SAM
How’s my favorite attorney daughter on her first day at Martin?

SUSANNAH
Hi, Daddy!

Joanne motions she’s headed outside.

JOANNE
Don’t worry. We’ll be outside waiting. Take your time, we’re not in a hurry.

Susannah gives a thumbs up and smile to Joanne and then turns back to the phone.

SUSANNAH
Checking up on me or something?

SAM
Not at all, Susie. Just wondering how your first day as a gainfully employed attorney in Somerset went.

SUSANNAH
It was fine. Jack’s got me working on a couple details involving his Project X… he still hasn’t filled me in on what the hell’s going on, though… oh, and Patrick stopped by as I was getting ready this morning.

SAM
Awfully nice of Patrick to do that.

SUSANNAH
Yeah. I made him help me pick out what to wear today. I think I embarrassed the heck out of him. He and I had a quick breakfast before I came to the office.

SAM
Sounds like you’re having fun. Lahoma sends her best wishes.

SUSANNAH
Tell Mom I’ll e-mail her tonight. Patrick took a phone picture of me dressed for my first day at work and I think she’ll get a kick out of me.

SAM
She’ll like that, I’m sure. Did I catch you at a bad time?

SUSANNAH
No, not at all! I was just about to go out with Joanne and a couple of her friends for drinks.

SAM
Making fast friends at the office already. Hey, don’t let me stop you… I just wanted to call and say hi and see how things went.

SUSANNAH
I appreciate the thought. Tell Mom hi, and if I don’t talk to you later tonight I’ll be sure to call in the morning.

SAM
Thank ya, hon. Love you.

SUSANNAH
I love you too, Dad.

As she hangs up, light music plays and Susannah grabs her purse and shuts out the lights, waiting to join Joanne and her friends. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- The Riverboat Club

We see The Riverboat Club, a restored Mississippi River-style paddlewheeler moored in the St. Charles River that has been turned into a restaurant.

We dissolve inside the club, where Alana, Taylor, Victoria and a couple other nurses are sitting around a large table with two pitchers of beer in the center.

TAYLOR
Great idea you guys had to go out again tonight.

ALANA
Yeah… only let’s not make it back-to-back nights in the future, OK? Some of us had to work and missed out before.

TAYLOR
Is it my fault you were watching a patient closely?

VICTORIA
(Laughing) Careful, Taylor… that’s still a sore spot with Alana.

Alana sips from her drink and looks at Victoria.

ALANA
It’s not a sore spot! (Pause) Nick and I have become better friends as of late. We’ve gotten over the awkward stage we were in following our breakup.

TAYLOR
That’s good. (Looks at the bar) Because your other friend just walked in.

Alana turns to notice Mike at the bar. Mike doesn’t see Alana, but she gets up. Checking her face, Alana dabs on a little lipstick.

ALANA
Ladies… I will be right back.

Taylor turns, warily eyeing Victoria.

TAYLOR
I wonder if Mike knows what’s about to hit him.

Alana goes over with her beer glass to the bar and taps Mike on the shoulder.

ALANA
Hey you…

MIKE
(Turns) Hi!

Obviously he is very glad to see Alana and he reaches out, draws Alana close, and gives her a quick kiss. It’s an awkward moment, and the two look at each other a bit strange afterwards.

Cutting back to the main table, Victoria has a drink set down in front of her by the waitress, causing her to become a bit confused.

VICTORIA
(Turns to waitress) I’m sorry, miss… I didn’t order this.

WAITRESS
I know. It’s courtesy of the gentleman at the bar.

Victoria turns to see Zachary sitting there, smiling and waving. She turns back and has a devilish grin on her face. We hear the music in the bar playing as we change scenes.

CUT TO -- Bernard’s

Scott and Annabella are sharing a game of pool in the back room of Bernard’s. Annabella has just finished putting the 8-ball away, much to Scott’s chagrin, and she celebrates with a drink from her beer glass.

SCOTT
Uh, who was it that said they were a little rusty at pool?

ANNABELLA
Well… I thought I was.

SCOTT
The way you’re playing, you could have beat Jackie Gleason at this game if he were still alive. You hustler. That’s four games in a row you’ve won!

ANNABELLA
Oh, so you’re implying I’m a con artist?

SCOTT
Yes. A damn good looking con artist.

Annabella blushes slightly and reaches over, giving Scott a quick kiss.

ANNABELLA
Thanks.

SCOTT
It’s nice to see someone captured your heart in Italy. Will we ever get to meet this guy when he comes to Somerset?

ANNABELLA
Well, it was kind of a whirlwind romance. He’s back here in the states now and he said he’d look me up when he had a chance.

SCOTT
You can wait that long?

ANNABELLA
I’ll try. It won’t be easy. But I’ll try.

SCOTT
Hey, that’s what you’ve got friends like me for, isn’t it?

ANNABELLA
I like being with you because you don’t ask questions. You’re not an inquisitive person away from the police station.

Scott sits with Annabella at the high-top table by the pool area, drinks from his beer and gets a little misty-eyed.

ANNABELLA
Don’t tell me I make you cry when I beat you four times in a row.

SCOTT
Naa. It’s not that. I just remember when you were a teenager helping out with the don’t talk to strangers program that the Somerset Police sponsored. I got to be good friends with your family. Julia and I loved the company.

ANNABELLA
I know. (Gets a little misty-eyed herself) I still miss your wife a lot.

SCOTT
Well, you were there for me after Julia passed away, and I’ll never forget that.

ANNABELLA
Do you think about her often?

SCOTT
Every time I hear about a car accident in Somerset.

ANNABELLA
It’s okay, you can tell me. (Pauses and thinks) I guess that’s why you got on my case last night about driving so quickly to get to Grant’s Preserve.

SCOTT
I didn’t know that was you. I’d never seen that car.

ANNABELLA
I fined myself $500 for speeding. I sent a check off to the Red Cross this morning. I’ve got the receipt to prove it.

SCOTT
I’d have fined you less.

ANNABELLA
I’d have refused. I want to do some good things with the money I earned over in Italy. There’s more where that came from, I tell myself.

Scott smiles, and Annabella also smiles as she grabs the pool stick for another game.

ANNABELLA
You up for another?

Annabella blows on the top of the pool stick like a gun.

ANNABELLA
Maybe this time I’ll let you win.

SCOTT
You’re on.

The two begin another game of pool as the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Riverboat Club

We’re back at the main bar, as Mike pulls away from Alana. He even feels a bit awkward.

ALANA
Wagner, you had a few too many already?

MIKE
Hey, you can throw that beer in my face if you want. I’m sorry. I’m just giddy.

ALANA
Really? (Puts beer down) I’ll spare you the shower then. What’s got you so giddy?

MIKE
Meet Mike Wagner, the newest investigative reporter at The Register. I got promoted this afternoon.

Alana’s eyes widen and she takes Mike’s face in her hands.

ALANA
Oh my God! That’s wonderful! In that case…

Alana reaches in and plants a kiss of her own on Mike’s lips. We see Taylor’s mouth open, looking a little shocked as Victoria giggles.

ALANA
Unfortunately, bud, that’s the last kiss you’re getting from me tonight because I’m out with the girls. But I will buy you a cold one if you’d like.

MIKE
I accept.

For the first time, we see Mike with his hand around Alana’s back. Usually she pulls away from stuff like this, but this time she really isn’t resisting being by his side.

CUT TO -- Susannah’s house

Susannah has pulled up after going out with Joanne for a couple drinks, and she swings her legs out to the driveway to get out of the car. She is on the phone with Joanne.

SUSANNAH
Yes, Joanne. I got home safely. We’ll have to do this again very soon, maybe make a night of it with some of the other employees. (Pauses) OK, have a good night! See ya at the office tomorrow.

Susannah walks up the sidewalk and kneels to pick up the Register. She notices the newspaper sticking out of the corner.

SUSANNAH
Now why would a paperboy bury the paper under the floor mat like that?

She picks up the paper, without noticing the contents, and unlocks the door to go inside.

Susannah puts the papers on the kitchen counter and turns on the lights, taking off her suit jacket. She sees the Register on the top.

SUSANNAH
Almost feels like I got two papers. Wonder what’s good in the news today?

The light music gives way to a funeral-style piano dirge as Susannah picks up the Register… and she sees an old copy of the Kansas City Star underneath.

Gasping, she puts the paper down.

We see Susannah looking frightened. The camera cuts down to her chest, as we see her with both hands on her chest. We hear a fast, generic heart beating as Susannah has a terrified look on her face.

SUSANNAH
No… no… it can’t be.

It’s obvious what is in that paper has given Susannah some sort of anxiety attack. Looking down, she sees her hands trembling.

Quickly reaching into the refrigerator, she grabs a bottled water and slugs it down to calm her fragile nerves. We hear the heart slow down and she becomes calmer.

SUSANNAH
Susie... no. You're safe here. And anyway... no one can hurt you.

Susannah still looks frightened as the piano music continues. The picture immediately cuts to black.

SOMERSET EPISODE 019
Original airdate: August 7, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Nick’s apartment

Morning has turned to afternoon in Somerset.

Alana spent the morning sleeping in Nick’s bed before waking up, making sure Nick was okay and then leaving. Nick has gotten some more sleep, but he is rousted awake by a knock on the door.

Nick gets up and slowly makes his way to the door, still a bit groggy but feeling better.

NICK
Coming, coming.

As he opens the door, he sees a slightly bemused Jack standing there with flowers and a floor pillow.

JACK
You really have to stop falling out of bed, you know.

Nick laughs at the sight of Jack with flowers.

NICK
Why, Jack. I didn’t know you cared.

JACK
I do, but not in the way you’d think.

NICK
Very funny. Come on in.

Nick turns around and goes toward the kitchen as Jack shuts the door.

NICK
I’d offer you something to drink, but I can’t have anything with this concussion.

JACK
Not even coffee?

NICK
Well, except that. There’s a pot on the counter.

JACK
Well then, don’t mind if I do.

Jack notices Nick coming out toward the kitchen and shoos him back toward the couch.

JACK
Get back on the couch, I’ll get your coffee. Now how the heck did you do this again?

NICK
I’m sure Alana filled you in.

JACK
Humor me, Nicholas. I was out of commission last night and I’ve been with Susannah, my new employee, most of the morning working on getting her settled at Martin Enterprises.

NICK
And hopefully she’s settled in fine, right?

JACK
That she is. I knew I needed to check on you after the message I got this morning. Now out with it. What the hell happened to you?

NICK
Something tells me you WON’T want to know this.

Jack shakes his head.

JACK
Doesn’t work this time. I want to know how Somerset’s future mayor took a header onto his bedroom floor. (Smiles) Now out with it, my boy.

NICK
Well, okay. If you insist…

As Nick begins telling the story, the music rises and the picture fades to black.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

The first part of Somerset is presented today by Lilt, the only home permanent with gripper sponges. The way to shiny, beautiful hair.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Bernard’s

Mike is in Bernard’s at the bar on a lunch break, and he’s chatting Bernard up at the bar on the possible story involving graffiti.

MIKE
(Sipping a beer)
Everything OK around here lately, man?

Bernard nods his head.

BERNARD
If you’re looking for a couple comments from me on the graffiti I haven’t seen any. They generally leave me alone.

MIKE
That’s good. It shows that they’re not messing around with the established properties. Giovanni said he hasn’t had any guff from the young people causing trouble.

BERNARD
You know this better than I would. Is there a gang problem down there?

MIKE
Naaa. There are gang issues here in Somerset, but the waterfront isn’t where they’re hanging out. It’s more of an inner-city issue, like most other cities our size. Or bigger.

BERNARD
Hell, sometimes smaller. Well, hopefully it doesn’t spread out from there.

MIKE
You’re going to be safe here. Restaurant Row is an institution in Somerset. You and Giovanni have been around for years.

BERNARD
Amazing that we’re good friends throughout all of this competition, huh?

MIKE
You serve different food. I can eat here for lunch and at Giovanni’s for dinner if I really wanted to do it.

BERNARD
Nice.

Bernard looks toward the back of the room, by the corner booth.

BERNARD
Say, isn’t that your boss back there?

Mike turns around and notices Norman Vickery there entertaining a client.

MIKE
Well, so it is. Wonder what’s going on?

Mike notices Norman is getting up from entertaining his client, and he notices Norman coming over to the bar area.

MIKE
(Laughing)
Spying on your employees at Bernard’s, Norman?

Norman laughs and notices Mike drinking a beer.

NORMAN
You’re lucky I look the other way on certain things.

MIKE
One beer, boss?

NORMAN
Relax. It’s all right. Not like you’re hanging out here on duty, anyway.

MIKE
I could if you’d like me to do it…

NORMAN
You’re lucky I’ve got a good sense of humor, Wagner. Actually, I’m here working a source for a possible A-1 story that I’ll hand off once I get more information… but I have been meaning to talk to you regarding another matter.

MIKE
(Sips beer)
Something wrong?

NORMAN
Oh no no, nothing wrong. Just something long overdue regarding you. I’ll meet you back at the office.

As Norman leaves the bar, Mike finishes his beer with a puzzled look on his face, wondering why Norman would want to see him.

MIKE
Well, he’s not firing me. What’s up?

Bernard shrugs his shoulders as Mike has a questioning look on his face. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Cleybank Corporation

At the Cleybank Corporation, George is in a conference call with some investors regarding his plans for Somerset’s downtown renovation. As he is talking, a few voices have questions.

GEORGE
You have the documents in front of you, all of you should be looking at the page marked “Five-Year Renovation”.

Voices on the other end talk about the plan one by one.

VOICE #1
I have to tell you, George… your plan for Somerset has plenty of changes in it.

VOICE #2
A lot of restaurants that are popular would be affected by this.

GEORGE
They will get the chance for buyouts of their buildings. But I’m only offering one deal. If they don’t take the deal, they’ll pay the consequences.

VOICE #1
George, restaurants like Bernard’s and Giovanni’s are institutions in Somerset. If you tore those properties down and replaced them with something nondescript, you’d risk alienating the population here.

GEORGE
I know the city’s exploding in population. The consequences would be harsh if they didn’t buy my offer.

VOICE #1
I’d hate to hear the consequences, but go ahead.

GEORGE
This vision of Somerset has to stand. The Peoples Building, the Woodruff, the old Somerset Inn, those restaurants…

Another voice chimes in to the conversation.

VOICE #3
You’d better have a good explanation for the Somerset Inn’s owner. That’s a historic landmark. They renovated the property several years ago and it has attracted a lot of attention.

VOICE #1
I’ve had clients stay in their rooms. The ownership did a nice job refurbishing the lobby and the rooms themselves.

GEORGE
I’ll deal with that later. Maybe our company takes over the hotel and quietly does what we want to do with it.

VOICE #2
Why the interest in The Peoples Building, George?

George rises from his chair and looks out the window at the Somerset skyline.

GEORGE
Why not? When I’m done with this town, it’s going to look a lot different. The area’s been stagnant for far too long.

VOICE #3
George, this area snapped back pretty well after the last recession. The economy is still humming along quite nicely.

GEORGE
But it is not humming nationally. People are hurting in parts of the country, even here in New York.

VOICE #1
The area isn’t feeling the pinch of the housing market. Most of the houses in Somerset are selling for relative bargains. Grant’s Preserve has several homes in the $125,000 range that are selling well.

George is starting to wonder if his team is solidly behind him.

GEORGE
Look, are you all nuts? I thought I had a team that was behind my vision of Somerset. Instead, I’m getting questions about whether or not you think I’m competent enough to pull this off.

VOICE #2
George, no one is saying that. We know you’ve got it in for Jack Martin. You want to see your vision for Somerset implemented before his.

GEORGE
You’re right. (Turns from window and smiles) I do.

As light music mixes with a foreboding piano medley, the picture switches to the next scene.

DISSOLVE TO -- Nick’s apartment

The scene changes to Jack sitting down and listening to Nick’s woeful tale of love lost in a dream.

JACK
This woman is really affecting you, isn’t she?

NICK
Listen, Jack. I know she’s gone. I know I have to get on with my life. I had a chance encounter in a bar with a beautiful woman. It happens more often than you’d think, right?

JACK
Not in my life it hasn’t. (Laughs and drinks coffee)

NICK
Oh come on, Jack. You can’t tell me someone as handsome and virile as you hasn’t had woman falling at your feet.

JACK
Virile?

(Jack swigs his coffee back like he’s quickly downing a shot of whiskey)

JACK
Now that called for a shot of caffeine.

NICK
You know what I meant.

JACK
Well, Nick… I have had my share of dates. You’ve seen some of the ladies I’ve squired around Somerset.

NICK
Of course I have. I think people would say you have fine taste in women.

JACK
Why thank you, Nicholas. I knew there was a reason why I kept you around and built you up to eventually be a good politician someday.

Nick covers his eyes and shakes his head.

NICK
I just wish I could have really met my mystery woman and that it wasn’t a dream. God, she had on the most gorgeous dress…

JACK
Somewhere, someday, your princess will come to Somerset.

NICK
Yes, but it won’t be her!

JACK
So what if it’s not her? Someone in this town will knock you off your feet. This just proved that you have what it takes yet. Don’t sell yourself short!

NICK
I know. And I know it may be sooner than I think, right?

JACK
Well, you told me Alana stayed here this morning.

NICK
Ah, yes. Alana. The great love of my life before all hell broke loose. (Drinks coffee) We did have two really good years together.

JACK
You’re friends right now, and that’s how it will stay. No more enemies for either of you.

NICK
You’re right. I don’t think I could take another long separation from her. If there was one thing good that came from this accident, it was getting to see Alana again and clearing the air with her on a lot of things.

JACK
So keep on your path you’re on right now. Have Alana in your life as a friend and search for your happiness.

Nick gets a strange look on his face.

NICK
Search for your happiness? That sounds sooooo much like a soap opera.

JACK
Well, I’d have told you to search for tomorrow, Nick, but that’s been done already. (Laughs)

The two share a laugh as Nick settles back in on the couch and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Cleybank Corporation

George is in his office at Cleybank, having finished the conference call. He is now on the phone with Zachary, whom we do not see, discussing how things went.

GEORGE
Mixed results. Some of the investors are a little wary that my plan might be a bit too grandiose… hey, if you have any other smart ideas, let them know. I think I got through to them, but I’m going to need a little more help.

George faces the window as he continues talking to Zachary.

GEORGE
All right, Zach. Stay off your feet and… what do you mean you’re meeting friends tonight? (Turns back toward the camera) Dammit, son! Are you trying to get yourself killed?

He realizes he’s being too dramatic and pulls back.

GEORGE
I know the doctors said you could drive. At least you’re doing it with a car. All right, I’ll see you when I get home tonight. Will you be home for dinner?... Good, I’ll see you then.

As George hangs up, he looks outside at the view of Somerset and the sun shining overhead on the city.

GEORGE
Just a matter of time. That’s all.

The music builds as the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Register

The music plays lightly as we switch back to the Register office, where Norman is working on some story ideas when Mike knocks on the door.

MIKE
Hey, boss. How did the meeting go?

NORMAN
Not bad. Have a seat.

Mike sits down, feeling a bit fidgety because he has no idea what is going on.

NORMAN
You seem a little… nervous. Do you think you’re in trouble or something?

MIKE
Well, the thought did cross my mind. Am I being fired?

Norman looks a little stunned.

NORMAN
Now why would you think that? Didn’t I tell you it wasn’t bad news?

MIKE
I know I haven’t been the happiest person at the Register lately, and I wondered if you guys were getting sick of my attitude.

NORMAN
On the contrary. The fact you’re getting antsy and not being complacent tells me you’d be the perfect investigative reporter here at the Register.

Now this is not what Mike was ready to hear. His mouth drops, and he smiles slightly as he takes a deep breath.

MIKE
You don’t mean that.

NORMAN
I can take it back if you’d like…

MIKE
Okay! (Laughs as he holds up hand) You mean it! You mean I’m going to be the next Steve Slade?

NORMAN
I don’t think anyone could stop Steve. Or top him, for that matter. But the higher-ups are willing to give you a chance.

MIKE
I’ll take it! (Shakes Norman’s hand) Now what’s my first order of business?

NORMAN
What everyone else in this town is wondering. What the hell is Project X and how is Jack Martin behind it?

MIKE
(Music in the background) I already know a couple of Jack’s secrets… do you want something more full-fledged?

NORMAN
Jack has to know that people around here are starting to wonder. Get to the bottom of what is going on.

MIKE
I’ll get on it right away.

As happy music plays, Mike is happy about his job promotion, and he wants to celebrate. The picture fades to black.

EPISODE 18 -- SISTER BONDING

SOMERSET EPISODE 18
DRtv airdate: August 6, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Petterino house

The beginning of this episode is a direct pickup from Episode 17, as Victoria has said something about her looks that Annabella can’t believe.

They are still at the kitchen table having morning coffee as the 18th episode of Somerset begins, and Annabella is talking about life over in Italy while Victoria wipes the sleep out of her eyes and repeats that she’s not the model type.

ANNABELLA
Tell me you didn’t say what you just did.

VICTORIA
It’s true. I’m not in the same league you are, Bella.

Annabella, by now, is incredulous. She runs to her purse, takes out a huge compact and opens it up.

ANNABELLA
Look at yourself, Tori.

VICTORIA
Oh, come on, Annabella… I don’t even have that much makeup on…

ANNABELLA
That’s the point!

Annabella makes Victoria look at herself in the mirror.

ANNABELLA
My God, Tori. Look at you. You’re gorgeous. You’ve got a face that could stop traffic…

VICTORIA
Are you saying this because you’re my sister?

Annabella looks a little surprised, but she isn't. She's seen this side of Victoria before.

ANNABELLA
Wow. I didn’t know my sister had self-esteem issues.

The camera focuses in on Victoria as she looks at her face in the mirror. A light music melody plays as the picture fades to black.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion of Somerset is brought to you today by Cascade, the dishwashing detergent with sheeting action. Leaves dishes and glasses spotless and shiny.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Petterino house

We pick the scene back up as Victoria puts down the compact and gets up from her chair.

VICTORIA
I guess I don’t look that bad, do I?

ANNABELLA
Don’t look that bad… please. Tori, I know you’re so wrapped up in your budding nursing career that you’re not letting yourself go and have fun, but take my advice. I did the same thing when I was a beginning model. I told myself I didn’t have time for guys.

Victoria walks across the room to the coffeemaker, ready to pour another cup.

VICTORIA
Bella, like you said… I’m just 23. You’re around 30. We’ve both got a long life ahead of us when it comes to finding Mr. Right… right?

ANNABELLA
What do you think I’ve been trying to tell you?

VICTORIA
And besides… it’s not like I don’t have a lot of guy friends. I keep in touch with my high school and college buddies, you know.

ANNABELLA
I know you do… I had to listen to you giggling on the phone all throughout high school. And I know one or two in particular. (Smiles) Do you have self-esteem problems?

VICTORIA
I don’t. It’s just I’m not that type of woman.

ANNABELLA
I never knew there was a type. Does that mean I’m vain and insecure just because of what I do? I’m a model, so I should obsess about something?

Victoria spins to face Annabella.

VICTORIA
My God, Bella! No! I didn’t mean it that way. I’m just not the model type.

ANNABELLA
And you think I am when I’m here in the states? No way. I love my anonymity over here. Only a handful of people know that in Italy, I’m one of the (puts up her fingers as if she is quoting) hotter supermodels around.

VICTORIA
While here, you’re just Annabella Petterino.

ANNABELLA
And I love it. The minute I get on that plane and set foot in the states, it’s a relief to not have anyone notice me like that here. I come through customs and pick up my bags just like any ordinary citizen. I can pick my car up out of storage. I can go through a drive-in window and order a cheeseburger without anyone looking at me funny.

Victoria nods her head and gets a sly grin on her face.

VICTORIA
Especially because you’re a model ordering a cheeseburger.

ANNABELLA
Tell me about it. Some models cringe when they get around peanut dust. They worry they’ll put on a pound just by inhaling it.

VICTORIA
With this family, we put on a pound just by inhaling Dad’s cooking.

Annabella pours another coffee and laughs.

ANNABELLA
Make that 10 pounds. We have good cooks for parents. Now come back here, sit down and play catch-up with me. I wanna hear what’s going on in your life.

VICTORIA
Yours is more exciting.

ANNABELLA
Suuuuuure it is.

Music plays in the background as the sisters laugh, able to share a fun moment together. The scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Martin Enterprises

Susannah comes off the elevator into Jack’s office area, just as Joanne is coming out from Jack’s office having placed some faxes and paperwork inside.

JOANNE
Susannah, good morning! Welcome aboard!

Joanne comes over and hugs Susannah.

JOANNE
You nervous at all?

SUSANNAH
A little. I’m not sure what to expect.

JOANNE
You’ll do just fine. You look very nice today, by the way.

SUSANNAH
(Twirls around)
Thank you. I tried to rope a friend of mine into helping me decide what to wear on my first day here at Martin Enterprises. Now he calls this my lawyerly look.

JOANNE
You actually called upon a guy's help... (Laughs) Well, Susannah, you’ll fit in nicely in a courtroom.

SUSANNAH
Thanks. I’ve heard that before. Is the big boss in?

JOANNE
He’s on the phone with the New York financial markets. He’s talking to a contact of his down there. He’ll be out in a second. (Hears door open) His ears must have been burning.

Jack steps out and sees Susannah there.

JACK
Susannah! Good morning and welcome to the first day of the rest of your life.

SUSANNAH
Ah, does this mean lifetime employment?

JACK
I don’t know. That’s up to you. It beat saying welcome to your first day in hell. (Laughs) Come with me, your cubicle awaits.

SUSANNAH
I just get a cubicle?

JACK
Well, actually, you do have an office. You’ll share it with others down the line, but for now it’s yours and yours alone.

Light music plays as Susannah and Jack go down the hall. We see Joanne put on her headphone to take a call as the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Cleypool mansion

At the Cleypool estate, George is on a call with an investor as Zachary limps down the curved staircase and into the living room. Fenwick arrives with coffee for George and notices Zachary.

FENWICK
Good morning, Master Zachary. Orange juice?

ZACHARY
Sure, Fenwick. If there’s any available.

FENWICK
Mmmmyes sir. I was just in the grove this morning squeezing freshly. I’ll get the carton.

Zachary breaks out laughing.

ZACHARY
I needed that, Fenwick. Thanks.

FENWICK
Glad I could be of service. I shall return.

Fenwick sets coffee by George’s desk and leaves the room. George is finishing up his phone call.

GEORGE
OK, Del. I’ll be in touch and hopefully I’ve got good news to give you. You take care.

George puts down the phone and turns around to face Zachary.

GEORGE
Why the hell didn’t you sleep down here last night? Didn’t the doctor say to stay off your feet?

ZACHARY
No, he said don’t run into the corner of a bed. I’ve already done that.

GEORGE
Very funny, Mr. Sarcasm. How is the ankle feeling?

ZACHARY
It hurts like hell at times, but I’ll live. Are you working from home today?

GEORGE
If you think you can get around here on your own, I’ll probably go into the office and oversee today’s conference call. I’m going to get my team together and discuss our options for Somerset’s urban renewal.

Now Zachary’s interest is piqued.

ZACHARY
Is this like the urban renewal on your cityscape you got several days ago?

GEORGE
I’m trying to put together some sort of deal where we buy this property, wreck it and build fresh on the site.

He points at the map. On the map, with ominous music playing in the background, we see George is pointing at The Peoples Building. The camera zooms in on the map site and the next scene blends in…

DISSOLVE TO -- Martin Enterprises

We see a shot of The Peoples Building out the window, and the camera pans back to show an empty office. Jack and Susannah enter.

JACK
Voila. Susannah, meet your office.

Susannah walks in and looks around. She sets her briefcase down on the desk and nods her head in approval. Looking around, Susannah sees her office has a healthy window view of Somerset.

SUSANNAH
I love this interior. Very nice. As for the outside view... Jack Martin, don’t feel obligated to give me a great view just because you and my dad are old friends.

Jack holds up his hand as if to say “not my doing”.

JACK
Hold it, hold it with the protest, my dear. I think if you look outside any office window on this side you’ll see the same view of Somerset. Goes with the territory when you own the building.

SUSANNAH
Well, either way, I’m going to love working in here. Thank you very much, Jack. Now all I need are some other people in here with me. This office looks a little too big for one person.

JACK
I am working on that as we speak. I’ll be out of town for a couple days on business, but I intend on making it a top priority when I return. I have some resumes of promising people to take a look at.

He points at the desk drawer.

JACK
By the way, we keep the computers strictly secure for safekeeping. Your computer log-in information should be tucked inside your desk.

SUSANNAH
Gotcha. All right, I’ll get right on everything I’ve got to do.

JACK
I haven’t even talked about work with you yet.

SUSANNAH
You see how eager I am to start? (Smiles)

Jack chuckles as Susannah sits down at the desk, turns on the computer and swirls around to look at the view outside. Light music plays as the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Petterino house

Annabella and Victoria are talking up a storm about her last visit to Italy, but the conversation topic inevitably turns back to life in Somerset.

ANNABELLA
I find it very hard to believe that some guy hasn’t swept you off your feet yet and whisked you away to the Thousand Islands or something.

VICTORIA
I’ve been busy at the hospital…

We see Victoria briefly thinking about Zachary.

VICTORIA
But there IS this cute guy that came in a while back to get treated for an ankle injury he had in a motorbike accident.

ANNABELLA
Ooooo! I’d like to hear about this one.

VICTORIA
Well… there’s really nothing to tell. Except his name. It’s Zachary Cleypool.

Annabella is a little incredulous.

ANNABELLA
THE Zachary Cleypool? As in Cleybank Corporation?

Annabella takes one big gulp of coffee and shakes her head, albeit with a small smile on her face.

ANNABELLA
Ooo boy, Tori.

VICTORIA
I know. I shouldn’t be doing anything like this. I don’t know how often he comes in for therapy but he’s been nothing but supportive to me when he does come in.

ANNABELLA
Well, it sounds to me like you have a winner.

Before Victoria can say anything, the phone rings. Annabella picks it up.

ANNABELLA
Good morning, Petterinos?

Scott is on the other end, already at his office going over cases. We only hear his voice on the phone.

SCOTT
I didn’t wake you guys up, did I?

ANNABELLA
Why not at all, Lt. Garfield. Good morning to you too.

As Victoria chuckles to herself, a light melody plays on piano as Annabella settles in briefly to talk to Scott. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Petterino house

Annabella is finishing up her phone call as the scene opens up.

ANNABELLA
I will see you tonight. Give me a call when you figure out what time. (Pause) OK, have a good day! Bye.

Victoria laughs as Annabella puts down the phone.

VICTORIA
Now what about YOUR personal life? I see you have a date with Scott tonight.

ANNABELLA
Tori… (laughs and blushes a bit) It’s not a date. Scott and I are just going for a drink and playing pool. We did that all the time when I was here. You know we go way back.

VICTORIA
How long before you two admit there’s a spark there?

ANNABELLA
Never. (Sees Tori looking kind of skeptical) Tori, I mean it. Scott knows how I feel and I know how he feels. And besides, I can’t wait to share my news with him.

VICTORIA
What news is that?

ANNABELLA
Well… he already knows the gist of it, but I met someone in Italy.

Victoria’s face brightens as Annabella smiles.

VICTORIA
But I don’t know the details. Bella, you give up details right this instant.

ANNABELLA
Well, I don’t really want to share an awful lot in case it doesn‘t work out… he lives here in the states, but he does business occasionally in Italy. I want to keep things kind of quiet because Mom and Dad don’t know about him.

VICTORIA
Yet Scott does. That makes sense.

ANNABELLA
Like I said… we’ve got that kind of friendship.

VICTORIA
Hmm. Okay, whatever you say…

The music plays briefly and then fades as the next scene commences.

DISSOLVE TO -- Cleypool mansion

Back at the Cleypool estate. George is looking at the map and comparing it to the model of Somerset on the table.

ZACHARY
I gotta tell you, Dad, your model of Somerset looks considerably different than the one on the map.

GEORGE
Son, that’s the whole point. This block of Somerset will look a lot different when I’m done with it.

Sinister piano music plays as Zachary looks down and realizes where George is looking.

ZACHARY
But Dad… that includes The Peoples Building… the Woodruff Building… One Somerset Plaza… and all the business on this street. Why would you want to knock the Woodruff Building down? That was just restored in the last several years.

George looks at Zachary pointing at development on Trowbridge Street.

GEORGE
And your point is?

ZACHARY
Some hard-working people own businesses on this block.

George looks at his son and quizzically wonders what the hell is going on.

GEORGE
Son, you getting soft on me? (Pauses) Or do you have a hankering for Italian food all of a sudden?

The music builds in intensity, as the piano theme darkens in mood.

ZACHARY
You’re not serious about the last part, are you?

GEORGE
Restaurant row. Bernard’s. Giovanni’s. The Riverboat Club. Gone. All of them. When I’m done, this town won’t know what hit it.

Zachary looks at George with a little skepticism. Given his stance between his father and how he likes the restaurants, what does he do? The picture fades to black.

EPISODE 17 -- FIRST DAY JITTERS

SOMERSET EPISODE 17
DRtv airdate: August 5, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Susannah’s house

We see an exterior shot of Grant’s Preserve in the morning, establishing that it is a new day in Somerset.

Susannah is in her upstairs bathroom, wearing nothing but undergarments and preparing for her first day as a lawyer on the Martin Enterprises payroll.

She is applying makeup and humming to herself as we hear a knock at the downstairs door.

SUSANNAH
What the… who could be here at this hour?

She leans out and yells down the stairs.

SUSANNAH
Come on in! The door’s open.

We hear the doorknob turn and someone enter Susannah’s house. Susannah has turned back towards the mirror to finish doing her face.

SUSANNAH
(Yelling down)
Who’s here?

The voice gives away the fact it is Patrick. He yells up the staircase.

PATRICK
A houseguest who wants to see you off on your first day of work.

Susannah smiles to herself as she continues doing her face.

SUSANNAH
(Nods her head)
Very impressive, Patrick. I thought you were working today.

PATRICK
I was on last night. Alana worked a 12-hour shift yesterday and I took part of that shift because we work well as a team and because I wanted to be awake to see you off this morning. I am working later tonight if you want to find me.

Susannah has thrown on a nightshirt, and she comes downstairs with a few clothes in her hand.

PATRICK
Anyhow, I figured I could use a little rest. But not before I came to see you off.

Patrick notices the clothes in Susannah's hand.

PATRICK
What do I get to do, play Project Runway here or something?

SUSANNAH
Well…

Susannah kisses Patrick on his cheek.

SUSANNAH
You are so sweet to come over here and see me off to work like this. And you are just in time to help me make the most important first decision of my career at Martin.

She holds up two pairs of nylons.

SUSANNAH
What do you think, black or brown?

Patrick laughs.

PATRICK
I’m afraid I don’t have much experience there, Susie. (Snickers) It has been a long time since I've worn pantyhose...

Susannah has that "very funny" look on her face.

SUSANNAH
All right, mister... cut the comedy or I’ll have to wrap these around your neck. Let me phrase it another way.

Susannah holds up her suit jacket.

SUSANNAH
Now then... black or brown?

PATRICK
Oh, I get it. You’re asking me what you would look best in overall. Don’t they say one color makes you look thinner?

Susannah playfully whacks him over the head with her suit jacket.

SUSANNAH
Are you saying I need to lose weight or something? The last I knew...

PATRICK
No, no! Not at all. Isn’t that what they say, anyway? One color gives you the illusion of being thinner?

SUSANNAH
(Holds up a flowery blouse) Well, I’m not exactly going monochrome…

PATRICK
Ah, so you will look a little feminine this morning.

Patrick points at Susannah's black hose.

PATRICK
Then black becomes you.

SUSANNAH
Thank you for the opinion. Now that I’ve gotten it, I’m putting myself together.

PATRICK
I brought a little breakfast, by the way.

Susannah turns as if she's going to head back up the stairs.

SUSANNAH
Oh good! Set it on the counter on your way out…

PATRICK
Huh?

Susannah turns back, smiles and gives Patrick a small smooch on his lips.

SUSANNAH
Gotcha. Hold on tight, I’ll be right back.

Patrick sips his coffee and sits down at the kitchen table, laughing to himself as a light melody plays. The picture fades to black.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion of Somerset is brought to you today by America’s favorite household cleanser, today’s Spic and Span. It releases its power in water.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Petterino house

Victoria is slowly coming downstairs, looking a bit bleary-eyed from the night before. As promised, she spent about 90 minutes crashing on Taylor’s couch before getting in her car and returning home to climb into bed.

She goes into the kitchen but turns away before she can see Annabella at the counter making coffee. Annabella sees her and smiles.

ANNABELLA
Would you like one lump or two with your coffee?

VICTORIA
Two, please. It was a long…

It suddenly hits Victoria who is talking. Her face brightens as she turns toward Annabella.

VICTORIA
Night! BELLA!!

She runs toward Annabella for a tight hug.

VICTORIA
Welcome home, sis!

ANNABELLA
It’s good to be here. (Gets grin on her face) Where were you last night, anyway? It’s not like you to be out so late.

VICTORIA
I didn’t know you were my babysitter. (Laughing)

ANNABELLA
No, you just missed my grand entrance back into Somerset. Didn’t you wonder about the car outside this morning?

VICTORIA
I was kind of out of it last night when I got home. It had been a long day, plus I’d been out with a couple nurse friends of mine. I had tunnel vision. I wanted my own bed.

ANNABELLA
Well, I sped into Somerset last night and had trouble getting in the house, so I finally remembered that Dad usually keeps the porch door open. I shimmied through there and set off the alarm.

Victoria takes a cup of coffee from Annabella.

VICTORIA
Thanks. Oh God, you don’t know how much I need this.

ANNABELLA
Did you work yesterday?

VICTORIA
Yes, I was on duty. Today, thankfully, is one of my days off. But Taylor, Alana and I are talking about a girls night out tonight, so I’ll probably catch up with a nap this afternoon.

ANNABELLA
Do it while you’re young, that’s what I say. (Laughs)

VICTORIA
Well, I went back to Taylor’s and crashed for a little bit, until I felt well enough to drive on my own. Tonight I may just stay there.

ANNABELLA
Smart girl. You always had the brains in the family.

VICTORIA
You had the looks.

Annabella turns to look at Victoria, who many would consider strikingly attractive, and wonders how Victoria could say such a thing.

ANNABELLA
Victoria Petterino, you look at yourself in the mirror and say that line once again. I had the looks? Look at yourself.

Victoria takes out her purse and looks in a compact mirror. She grimaces.

VICTORIA
Right now, I look like someone who had one too many cosmopolitans last night.

Annabella laughs as she takes a cup of coffee herself and sits down. A light melody can be heard in the background as the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital

At the hospital, Alana is off the clock but she elected to sleep in the nurses’ lounge until more information on Nick was released. Patrick left an order to spring Nick from the hospital this morning if he felt fine.

Alana goes down the hall and looks in on Nick, who has been sleeping but is awake and struggling a bit to sit up.

ALANA
(Comes in and helps Nick out)
Hey, bud. Let the nurses take care of that.

NICK
Ah, Alana… I’m fine. But it is good to see you, albeit under strange circumstances.

ALANA
You too, honey.

Alana leans down to kiss Nick on his forehead.

ALANA
It’s good to see we can be on speaking terms again after a long time.

NICK
Well, I never wanted to be getting the silent treatment in the first place. I am just glad things thawed out between us. (Looks at Alana) I’m just happy you’re doing something you love.

ALANA
I’ve been meaning to call you and see if you wanted to grab a drink or something and talk as friends, kind of re-establish our friendship.

NICK
I may take you up on that. (Grins) But won’t Mike get jealous?

Alana closes her eyes and shakes her head.

ALANA
Oh, Nick. Not you too. There’s nothing between Mike and myself.

NICK
Not yet, anyway.

ALANA
You just hush your mouth while I check your vitals.

Alana goes through the motions of checking Nick’s blood pressure and everything else, and the prognosis is good.

NICK
Am I going to live?

ALANA
Put it this way. Once those tests come back, if they’re negative you’re a free man. Do you have a ride?

NICK
I was going to call Jack, but I forgot this morning.

ALANA
Ahh, don’t bug Jack. I’m getting ready to leave here and I’ll see if your discharge papers will be ready. I’ll drop you off.

NICK
Is this part of your job?

ALANA
Consider it an old girlfriend paying back someone she cares about. (Leans down to kiss Nick again) I’ll be back.

As Alana leaves the room, Nick closes his eyes and tries to catch a small catnap amidst his groggy feeling. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Petterino house

We return to the Petterino kitchen, where Victoria is drinking her coffee and getting acquainted with her sister once again.

VICTORIA
I can’t believe we’re thinking of going out again tonight.

ANNABELLA
Why not? You’re still young. You’re 23 years old. You’re just starting out in your career.

VICTORIA
Joining the nurses at the bar doesn’t hold a candle to the lavish parties you attend, sis. No offense, but…

ANNABELLA
It may surprise you, Tori, but I don’t go to all those lavish parties in Italy. I do my job, I do it well, and a lot of times when I’m away from the cameras I just want to be alone. I take my car and I drive away.

VICTORIA
So no dates with Italy’s glamorous elite, huh?

ANNABELLA
Please. I separate my life there with my life here. The money’s great, but I’m not extravagant by any means. I’ll have to take you for a ride in that sportscar.

VICTORIA
Yeah. Now that I’ve seen it from in here, it DOES look like a dream car.

ANNABELLA
It handles well. It’s also a little fast, like Scott found out last night.

VICTORIA
Ah, I see. (Pauses) So you’re going to lie low?

ANNABELLA
I probably won’t do much today. I’m recovering from yesterday, and I have a feeling Scott may call and we may go get a beer tonight.

VICTORIA
Ah hah. I see.

Annabella turns and looks at Victoria. She lifts a finger and points it at Victoria.

ANNABELLA
Not a word, Tori…

VICTORIA
Okay! I won’t push.

ANNABELLA
I’ll push you instead. Have you let yourself drop the focus on career and start building a social life?

VICTORIA
Bella, it’s not exactly like the guys are rushing to call. And besides, I’m nothing special anyway.

A bit of “stinger” piano music plays, as if Annabella is dumbstruck by what Victoria just said. Before she can say anything, the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Susannah’s house

Patrick is downstairs sitting and drinking from his orange juice, and he hears Susannah coming downstairs. She is fully dressed in the traditional “power suit” look.

Patrick eyes Susannah and nods his head in approval.

PATRICK
Hubba hubba. Susie Lucas, you know how to turn a head.

Susannah does a spin in place and fluffs out her hair.

SUSANNAH
Is this good enough for you?

PATRICK
Hey, you’re not out to impress me. It’s your boss that you’re out to impress.

SUSANNAH
Jack’s not that type.

PATRICK
You’re right. He’s definitely not your average CEO of a major company. Anyhow, you look… lawyerly.

SUSANNAH
A little admiration of how I wear it well?

PATRICK
Just kidding. You look great. Now sit and eat with me. You don’t have to be in until…

SUSANNAH
I told Jack I’d be in before 9:30, and it’s (checks watch) oh, 8:45. Not too bad.

PATRICK
Considering traffic in Somerset is always a killer. (Laughter) At least out on the interstate.

SUSANNAH
I’d like to make a good impression on Jack now that I know Dad didn’t put him up to this job.

PATRICK
And what if he had?

Susannah sips her coffee and sits down as Patrick pulls out her chair, and Susannah has a look on her face like she wouldn’t have been surprised.

SUSANNAH
Jack told me I earned this chance fair and square, so I’m happy.

PATRICK
Hey, you’re not alone, you know. When I applied to work here, there was an old guard who knew the names Stanley and Teri Kurtz. I had to tell them I have an uncle in prison, just to sully the Kurtz name a bit.

SUSANNAH
So Leo’s still in jail, huh?

PATRICK
He’s content to live out his days because of what he did here in Somerset. I mean, some people hate Jack Martin for what he did with Delaney Brands…

SUSANNAH
(Grins)
One in particular?

PATRICK
Yeah, right. Jack may have made a mistake or two, but Leo Kurtz running Delaney Brands was like putting Al Capone in charge of the US Treasury.

Patrick sips his coffee as Susannah laughs.

PATRICK
So I wanted a fresh start. I told them to give me a job low down on the food chain.

SUSANNAH
And what happened?

PATRICK
I did so well at it, they damn ended up promoting me a couple years later. Now I’m just a couple steps away from chief of staff.

SUSANNAH
I know what you mean. I worked with Dad in Oklahoma City for several years until I decided I wanted to strike out on my own. So I hung out my own shingle in that city as a corporate attorney at another law firm.

PATRICK
Did you get sick of it?

SUSANNAH
Well, I was in Kansas City for a while and then I left there. I got homesick. Wanted to go back and feel the wind come sweeping down the plain.

PATRICK
(Sips coffee and smiles) Is this where you break into oh, what a beautiful morning?

SUSANNAH
No, but if you hum a few bars…

PATRICK
I’ll pass. Still a little bleary-eyed. I’m going to go home and hit the sack, I think.

SUSANNAH
I don’t blame you there. Could use a little more sleep myself. Anyhow...

Susannah kisses Patrick's cheek.

SUSANNAH
Thanks for coming to keep me company.

PATRICK
You're going to knock them out, you knockout.

Patrick and Susannah smile as the music builds and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

We see Nick’s darkened apartment as he and Alana enter. Alana guides Nick over to the couch so he can sit and relax.

ALANA
Are you sure you don’t want to lie down?

NICK
I probably will, but not in there. I may not sleep in that bed for a while.

Alana turns and sees the lamp and nightstand on the floor.

ALANA
Relax. I can go tidy up in there shortly. So… who is this mystery woman that had you so wrapped up in thought that you actually fell out of bed dreaming about her?

NICK
Oh, it’s no one. Not even a one-night stand. Never got a name, never got a number.

Alana kisses Nick on the cheek.

ALANA
Poor baby. Humor me, OK? We dated for nearly two years. Then we had a falling out over work. You went one way, and I went the other.

NICK
Which I regret to this day. I treated you badly toward the end and I’m sorry for it.

ALANA
Hey… you’re entitled to have a little fun once in a while. You just weren’t having any when you devoted all your life to work.

NICK
Tell me about it.

Nick reclines on the couch and then recalls the woman.

NICK
She had the most beautiful red hair… that smile…

ALANA
One look and you were hooked, right?

NICK
Close. (Starting to feel woozy) I think my meds are kicking in.

ALANA
Yes. The medicine you took at the hospital should help you sleep. Tell ya what. I’ve worked overnight and I could crash, so let me stay here with you for a while.

NICK
You don’t have to do that…

ALANA
I’m just going to recline… mind if I use that bed? I promise I’ll clean up for you.

NICK
Hey, you were familiar with it at one point. Be my guest. (Smiles)

ALANA
(Yawns) Thanks, old friend.

Nick and Alana wrap their arms around each other and gently kiss on the lips, a sign that their friendship will be solid.

Nick turns and goes to sleep as the music builds and Alana heads into the bedroom.

DISSOLVE TO -- Susannah’s house

Susannah is grabbing her briefcase and looking at her hair in the mirror. She bends down, adjusts her nylons and the hem on her skirt... in other words, wanting to make sure she looks perfect.

PATRICK
Susie, you look fine.

SUSANNAH
Just fine. You sure?

PATRICK
If I said drop-dead gorgeous, would you think I was lying?

SUSANNAH
Well… (Leans in and kisses Patrick on the cheek) Yes.

PATRICK
Ouch. That hurt. (Laughs) Go out there and knock them dead.

SUSANNAH
Thanks.

The two exit and walk down the sidewalk, with Patrick getting in his car and Susannah in hers.

Once the cars leave, we cut back to the house.

Low piano music plays as we see a shadowy figure with The Kansas City Star in hand and gloves on to prevent any prints from being left.

The figure, whose feet we can only see, sticks the paper underneath the welcome mat with one corner sticking out, and he walks away as an eerie music theme plays. We cannot see who it is as the picture immediately cuts to black.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Fade in on the closing credits for Somerset as the theme plays.
