EPISODE 17 -- FIRST DAY JITTERS

SOMERSET EPISODE 17
DRtv airdate: August 5, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Susannah’s house

We see an exterior shot of Grant’s Preserve in the morning, establishing that it is a new day in Somerset.

Susannah is in her upstairs bathroom, wearing nothing but undergarments and preparing for her first day as a lawyer on the Martin Enterprises payroll.

She is applying makeup and humming to herself as we hear a knock at the downstairs door.

SUSANNAH
What the… who could be here at this hour?

She leans out and yells down the stairs.

SUSANNAH
Come on in! The door’s open.

We hear the doorknob turn and someone enter Susannah’s house. Susannah has turned back towards the mirror to finish doing her face.

SUSANNAH
(Yelling down)
Who’s here?

The voice gives away the fact it is Patrick. He yells up the staircase.

PATRICK
A houseguest who wants to see you off on your first day of work.

Susannah smiles to herself as she continues doing her face.

SUSANNAH
(Nods her head)
Very impressive, Patrick. I thought you were working today.

PATRICK
I was on last night. Alana worked a 12-hour shift yesterday and I took part of that shift because we work well as a team and because I wanted to be awake to see you off this morning. I am working later tonight if you want to find me.

Susannah has thrown on a nightshirt, and she comes downstairs with a few clothes in her hand.

PATRICK
Anyhow, I figured I could use a little rest. But not before I came to see you off.

Patrick notices the clothes in Susannah's hand.

PATRICK
What do I get to do, play Project Runway here or something?

SUSANNAH
Well…

Susannah kisses Patrick on his cheek.

SUSANNAH
You are so sweet to come over here and see me off to work like this. And you are just in time to help me make the most important first decision of my career at Martin.

She holds up two pairs of nylons.

SUSANNAH
What do you think, black or brown?

Patrick laughs.

PATRICK
I’m afraid I don’t have much experience there, Susie. (Snickers) It has been a long time since I've worn pantyhose...

Susannah has that "very funny" look on her face.

SUSANNAH
All right, mister... cut the comedy or I’ll have to wrap these around your neck. Let me phrase it another way.

Susannah holds up her suit jacket.

SUSANNAH
Now then... black or brown?

PATRICK
Oh, I get it. You’re asking me what you would look best in overall. Don’t they say one color makes you look thinner?

Susannah playfully whacks him over the head with her suit jacket.

SUSANNAH
Are you saying I need to lose weight or something? The last I knew...

PATRICK
No, no! Not at all. Isn’t that what they say, anyway? One color gives you the illusion of being thinner?

SUSANNAH
(Holds up a flowery blouse) Well, I’m not exactly going monochrome…

PATRICK
Ah, so you will look a little feminine this morning.

Patrick points at Susannah's black hose.

PATRICK
Then black becomes you.

SUSANNAH
Thank you for the opinion. Now that I’ve gotten it, I’m putting myself together.

PATRICK
I brought a little breakfast, by the way.

Susannah turns as if she's going to head back up the stairs.

SUSANNAH
Oh good! Set it on the counter on your way out…

PATRICK
Huh?

Susannah turns back, smiles and gives Patrick a small smooch on his lips.

SUSANNAH
Gotcha. Hold on tight, I’ll be right back.

Patrick sips his coffee and sits down at the kitchen table, laughing to himself as a light melody plays. The picture fades to black.

We see an overhead shot of downtown, with the camera slowly pulling away from the buildings. The Somerset logo pops on the screen and goes into position at the center.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion of Somerset is brought to you today by America’s favorite household cleanser, today’s Spic and Span. It releases its power in water.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Petterino house

Victoria is slowly coming downstairs, looking a bit bleary-eyed from the night before. As promised, she spent about 90 minutes crashing on Taylor’s couch before getting in her car and returning home to climb into bed.

She goes into the kitchen but turns away before she can see Annabella at the counter making coffee. Annabella sees her and smiles.

ANNABELLA
Would you like one lump or two with your coffee?

VICTORIA
Two, please. It was a long…

It suddenly hits Victoria who is talking. Her face brightens as she turns toward Annabella.

VICTORIA
Night! BELLA!!

She runs toward Annabella for a tight hug.

VICTORIA
Welcome home, sis!

ANNABELLA
It’s good to be here. (Gets grin on her face) Where were you last night, anyway? It’s not like you to be out so late.

VICTORIA
I didn’t know you were my babysitter. (Laughing)

ANNABELLA
No, you just missed my grand entrance back into Somerset. Didn’t you wonder about the car outside this morning?

VICTORIA
I was kind of out of it last night when I got home. It had been a long day, plus I’d been out with a couple nurse friends of mine. I had tunnel vision. I wanted my own bed.

ANNABELLA
Well, I sped into Somerset last night and had trouble getting in the house, so I finally remembered that Dad usually keeps the porch door open. I shimmied through there and set off the alarm.

Victoria takes a cup of coffee from Annabella.

VICTORIA
Thanks. Oh God, you don’t know how much I need this.

ANNABELLA
Did you work yesterday?

VICTORIA
Yes, I was on duty. Today, thankfully, is one of my days off. But Taylor, Alana and I are talking about a girls night out tonight, so I’ll probably catch up with a nap this afternoon.

ANNABELLA
Do it while you’re young, that’s what I say. (Laughs)

VICTORIA
Well, I went back to Taylor’s and crashed for a little bit, until I felt well enough to drive on my own. Tonight I may just stay there.

ANNABELLA
Smart girl. You always had the brains in the family.

VICTORIA
You had the looks.

Annabella turns to look at Victoria, who many would consider strikingly attractive, and wonders how Victoria could say such a thing.

ANNABELLA
Victoria Petterino, you look at yourself in the mirror and say that line once again. I had the looks? Look at yourself.

Victoria takes out her purse and looks in a compact mirror. She grimaces.

VICTORIA
Right now, I look like someone who had one too many cosmopolitans last night.

Annabella laughs as she takes a cup of coffee herself and sits down. A light melody can be heard in the background as the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital

At the hospital, Alana is off the clock but she elected to sleep in the nurses’ lounge until more information on Nick was released. Patrick left an order to spring Nick from the hospital this morning if he felt fine.

Alana goes down the hall and looks in on Nick, who has been sleeping but is awake and struggling a bit to sit up.

ALANA
(Comes in and helps Nick out)
Hey, bud. Let the nurses take care of that.

NICK
Ah, Alana… I’m fine. But it is good to see you, albeit under strange circumstances.

ALANA
You too, honey.

Alana leans down to kiss Nick on his forehead.

ALANA
It’s good to see we can be on speaking terms again after a long time.

NICK
Well, I never wanted to be getting the silent treatment in the first place. I am just glad things thawed out between us. (Looks at Alana) I’m just happy you’re doing something you love.

ALANA
I’ve been meaning to call you and see if you wanted to grab a drink or something and talk as friends, kind of re-establish our friendship.

NICK
I may take you up on that. (Grins) But won’t Mike get jealous?

Alana closes her eyes and shakes her head.

ALANA
Oh, Nick. Not you too. There’s nothing between Mike and myself.

NICK
Not yet, anyway.

ALANA
You just hush your mouth while I check your vitals.

Alana goes through the motions of checking Nick’s blood pressure and everything else, and the prognosis is good.

NICK
Am I going to live?

ALANA
Put it this way. Once those tests come back, if they’re negative you’re a free man. Do you have a ride?

NICK
I was going to call Jack, but I forgot this morning.

ALANA
Ahh, don’t bug Jack. I’m getting ready to leave here and I’ll see if your discharge papers will be ready. I’ll drop you off.

NICK
Is this part of your job?

ALANA
Consider it an old girlfriend paying back someone she cares about. (Leans down to kiss Nick again) I’ll be back.

As Alana leaves the room, Nick closes his eyes and tries to catch a small catnap amidst his groggy feeling. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Petterino house

We return to the Petterino kitchen, where Victoria is drinking her coffee and getting acquainted with her sister once again.

VICTORIA
I can’t believe we’re thinking of going out again tonight.

ANNABELLA
Why not? You’re still young. You’re 23 years old. You’re just starting out in your career.

VICTORIA
Joining the nurses at the bar doesn’t hold a candle to the lavish parties you attend, sis. No offense, but…

ANNABELLA
It may surprise you, Tori, but I don’t go to all those lavish parties in Italy. I do my job, I do it well, and a lot of times when I’m away from the cameras I just want to be alone. I take my car and I drive away.

VICTORIA
So no dates with Italy’s glamorous elite, huh?

ANNABELLA
Please. I separate my life there with my life here. The money’s great, but I’m not extravagant by any means. I’ll have to take you for a ride in that sportscar.

VICTORIA
Yeah. Now that I’ve seen it from in here, it DOES look like a dream car.

ANNABELLA
It handles well. It’s also a little fast, like Scott found out last night.

VICTORIA
Ah, I see. (Pauses) So you’re going to lie low?

ANNABELLA
I probably won’t do much today. I’m recovering from yesterday, and I have a feeling Scott may call and we may go get a beer tonight.

VICTORIA
Ah hah. I see.

Annabella turns and looks at Victoria. She lifts a finger and points it at Victoria.

ANNABELLA
Not a word, Tori…

VICTORIA
Okay! I won’t push.

ANNABELLA
I’ll push you instead. Have you let yourself drop the focus on career and start building a social life?

VICTORIA
Bella, it’s not exactly like the guys are rushing to call. And besides, I’m nothing special anyway.

A bit of “stinger” piano music plays, as if Annabella is dumbstruck by what Victoria just said. Before she can say anything, the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Susannah’s house

Patrick is downstairs sitting and drinking from his orange juice, and he hears Susannah coming downstairs. She is fully dressed in the traditional “power suit” look.

Patrick eyes Susannah and nods his head in approval.

PATRICK
Hubba hubba. Susie Lucas, you know how to turn a head.

Susannah does a spin in place and fluffs out her hair.

SUSANNAH
Is this good enough for you?

PATRICK
Hey, you’re not out to impress me. It’s your boss that you’re out to impress.

SUSANNAH
Jack’s not that type.

PATRICK
You’re right. He’s definitely not your average CEO of a major company. Anyhow, you look… lawyerly.

SUSANNAH
A little admiration of how I wear it well?

PATRICK
Just kidding. You look great. Now sit and eat with me. You don’t have to be in until…

SUSANNAH
I told Jack I’d be in before 9:30, and it’s (checks watch) oh, 8:45. Not too bad.

PATRICK
Considering traffic in Somerset is always a killer. (Laughter) At least out on the interstate.

SUSANNAH
I’d like to make a good impression on Jack now that I know Dad didn’t put him up to this job.

PATRICK
And what if he had?

Susannah sips her coffee and sits down as Patrick pulls out her chair, and Susannah has a look on her face like she wouldn’t have been surprised.

SUSANNAH
Jack told me I earned this chance fair and square, so I’m happy.

PATRICK
Hey, you’re not alone, you know. When I applied to work here, there was an old guard who knew the names Stanley and Teri Kurtz. I had to tell them I have an uncle in prison, just to sully the Kurtz name a bit.

SUSANNAH
So Leo’s still in jail, huh?

PATRICK
He’s content to live out his days because of what he did here in Somerset. I mean, some people hate Jack Martin for what he did with Delaney Brands…

SUSANNAH
(Grins)
One in particular?

PATRICK
Yeah, right. Jack may have made a mistake or two, but Leo Kurtz running Delaney Brands was like putting Al Capone in charge of the US Treasury.

Patrick sips his coffee as Susannah laughs.

PATRICK
So I wanted a fresh start. I told them to give me a job low down on the food chain.

SUSANNAH
And what happened?

PATRICK
I did so well at it, they damn ended up promoting me a couple years later. Now I’m just a couple steps away from chief of staff.

SUSANNAH
I know what you mean. I worked with Dad in Oklahoma City for several years until I decided I wanted to strike out on my own. So I hung out my own shingle in that city as a corporate attorney at another law firm.

PATRICK
Did you get sick of it?

SUSANNAH
Well, I was in Kansas City for a while and then I left there. I got homesick. Wanted to go back and feel the wind come sweeping down the plain.

PATRICK
(Sips coffee and smiles) Is this where you break into oh, what a beautiful morning?

SUSANNAH
No, but if you hum a few bars…

PATRICK
I’ll pass. Still a little bleary-eyed. I’m going to go home and hit the sack, I think.

SUSANNAH
I don’t blame you there. Could use a little more sleep myself. Anyhow...

Susannah kisses Patrick's cheek.

SUSANNAH
Thanks for coming to keep me company.

PATRICK
You're going to knock them out, you knockout.

Patrick and Susannah smile as the music builds and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Nick’s apartment

We see Nick’s darkened apartment as he and Alana enter. Alana guides Nick over to the couch so he can sit and relax.

ALANA
Are you sure you don’t want to lie down?

NICK
I probably will, but not in there. I may not sleep in that bed for a while.

Alana turns and sees the lamp and nightstand on the floor.

ALANA
Relax. I can go tidy up in there shortly. So… who is this mystery woman that had you so wrapped up in thought that you actually fell out of bed dreaming about her?

NICK
Oh, it’s no one. Not even a one-night stand. Never got a name, never got a number.

Alana kisses Nick on the cheek.

ALANA
Poor baby. Humor me, OK? We dated for nearly two years. Then we had a falling out over work. You went one way, and I went the other.

NICK
Which I regret to this day. I treated you badly toward the end and I’m sorry for it.

ALANA
Hey… you’re entitled to have a little fun once in a while. You just weren’t having any when you devoted all your life to work.

NICK
Tell me about it.

Nick reclines on the couch and then recalls the woman.

NICK
She had the most beautiful red hair… that smile…

ALANA
One look and you were hooked, right?

NICK
Close. (Starting to feel woozy) I think my meds are kicking in.

ALANA
Yes. The medicine you took at the hospital should help you sleep. Tell ya what. I’ve worked overnight and I could crash, so let me stay here with you for a while.

NICK
You don’t have to do that…

ALANA
I’m just going to recline… mind if I use that bed? I promise I’ll clean up for you.

NICK
Hey, you were familiar with it at one point. Be my guest. (Smiles)

ALANA
(Yawns) Thanks, old friend.

Nick and Alana wrap their arms around each other and gently kiss on the lips, a sign that their friendship will be solid.

Nick turns and goes to sleep as the music builds and Alana heads into the bedroom.

DISSOLVE TO -- Susannah’s house

Susannah is grabbing her briefcase and looking at her hair in the mirror. She bends down, adjusts her nylons and the hem on her skirt... in other words, wanting to make sure she looks perfect.

PATRICK
Susie, you look fine.

SUSANNAH
Just fine. You sure?

PATRICK
If I said drop-dead gorgeous, would you think I was lying?

SUSANNAH
Well… (Leans in and kisses Patrick on the cheek) Yes.

PATRICK
Ouch. That hurt. (Laughs) Go out there and knock them dead.

SUSANNAH
Thanks.

The two exit and walk down the sidewalk, with Patrick getting in his car and Susannah in hers.

Once the cars leave, we cut back to the house.

Low piano music plays as we see a shadowy figure with The Kansas City Star in hand and gloves on to prevent any prints from being left.

The figure, whose feet we can only see, sticks the paper underneath the welcome mat with one corner sticking out, and he walks away as an eerie music theme plays. We cannot see who it is as the picture immediately cuts to black.

EPISODE 16 -- WELCOME HOME

SOMERSET EPISODE 16
DRtv airdate: August 4, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Petterino house

The fourth week of Somerset begins with a direct pickup of Friday’s final scene involving Giovanni and Rose in bed together, with the dialogue replayed so that viewers can recall what took place.

ROSE
I always can tell when you love not having the kids around. You turn into the lothario you always were when we were younger.

GIOVANNI
Hey… is it my fault I have the libido like a bodybuilder? It’s us passionate Italians, you know. Viagra’s not needed around this house.

ROSE
And I am so glad we came home early tonight. It’s a great feeling to…

We hear a rattling noise downstairs. The music instantly turns from light romantic to a sinister piano.

ROSE
(Sitting up bolt upright in bed)
What the hell?

GIOVANNI
Hey, don’t worry about it. The security alarm didn’t go off, so everything’s probably all right. It‘s so quiet in here sometimes we can hear rattling.

The security alarm suddenly sounds, and now Giovanni is a little concerned.

GIOVANNI
Forget everything I just said. I’ll go check it out.

ROSE
Hurry back. (Scared tone of voice) And be careful.

Giovanni puts a pair of pants on and takes a baseball bat downstairs with him, a bat that he uses in just such an emergency.

He heads downstairs, where he sees a shadowy figure trying to mess with the security alarm.

GIOVANNI
Hands up, you…

The lights come on and Giovanni’s face drops.

GIOVANNI
Oh my…

He breaks out into a wide smile.

We cut to a young woman standing by the security system, having finally disabled the alarm. She turns around.

It is Annabella, the Petterinos’ oldest daughter, who has sneaked back into Somerset without warning.

ANNABELLA
(Sheepishly grinning)
Uh… hi, Daddy.

Giovanni can’t quite believe his eyes. The music plays and the picture fades to black.

The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion brought to you today by Pert, the 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner for hair that bounces and behaves.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

We see the hospital’s outline at night, accompanied by dramatic piano music. A gurney is wheeled into the ER, with the camera rushing alongside it to give the viewer a sensation of being dramatically wheeled into the hospital.

Nick is on the gurney, having collapsed at his home in Friday’s cliffhanger. There is a white bandage on his head with red streaks indicating blood.

Patrick sees the gurney being brought in and rushes over.

PATRICK
Hey guys, what do we have…

He does a double take when he sees Nick’s face.

PATRICK
Oh my God… Nick! Nick, what happened?

Nick, who is struggling to stay conscious, mumbles.

NICK
Wh… where… am I?

PATRICK
It’s Patrick, Nick. Patrick Kurtz. You’ve been wheeled into the hospital. Do you know what happened to you?

Nick musters a faint smile.

NICK
I guess I’m…

Nick’s voice starts to tail off as he loses consciousness.

NICK
Not at Bernard’s anymore.

Patrick has a puzzled look on his face at what Nick just said. The gurney is wheeled into one of the emergency rooms.

DISSOLVE TO -- Taylor’s apartment

Victoria and Taylor are stumbling into Taylor’s apartment in the darkness. Taylor flips the light switch and for the first time we see Taylor’s apartment in the flesh.

Taylor, who lives in the Whispering Gardens complex just a few miles from Grant’s Preserve, has a modest but well-furnished one-bedroom apartment with a view of the edge of downtown Somerset.

Taylor puts down her purse and shuts the door.

TAYLOR
You sure you don’t want to stay the night? You’re more than welcome.

VICTORIA
Naaa, that’s all right. I may crash for a couple hours here and then sneak home to sleep in my own bed. Thanks, though.

TAYLOR
No problem. Tonight was a lot of fun.

Victoria turns and quizzically looks at Taylor.

VICTORIA
Was it?

TAYLOR
You act as if you didn’t have any fun.

VICTORIA
I did and so did you… until Joanne walked in.

Music plays as the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

Alana is in the nurses’ lounge taking one short break before finishing her 12-hour shift, and an unidentified nurse comes in looking for her.

ALANA
Hey, am I missing anything?

NURSE
I think they just brought your ex in here.

Alana suddenly appears worried.

ALANA
My ex… Nick, what happened?

CUT TO -- ER

Patrick is looking at Nick and he instructs a nurse to call Bernard’s.

PATRICK
I want to find out if Nick was at Bernard’s tonight.

Alana rushes toward the ER and comes through the door.

ALANA
Nick? Nick, are you here?

She sees Nick and rushes right over.

PATRICK
Calm down, Alana. I’m running some tests here shortly, but I think Nick’s just been the victim of a nasty bump on the head.

The police officer accompanying the gurney nods his head and agrees.

OFFICER
We got a call from Nick’s apartment but there wasn’t a response on the other end. Our tracing system routed the call back to his apartment. When we got there we saw no signs of a struggle. It looked like one of his drawers by the nightstand was hanging out slightly.

PATRICK
(Looks a little puzzled)
Nick, what the heck was going on at your place tonight?

ALANA
Poor baby. (She kisses Nick’s forehead) Hey sweetie, you awake?

Nick opens his eyes, albeit weakly. He softly talks.

NICK
I wondered how long it would take you to come running out here.

Alana strokes Nick’s forehead as the music plays to change scenes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Petterino home

Giovanni still has the bat hanging over his head.

ANNABELLA
Dad, you’re not going to look like Barry Bonds, no matter how hard you try.

Giovanni puts down the bat and opens his arms.

GIOVANNI
Bello figlia… welcome home.

Rose, who isn’t sure what’s going on, comes down the stairs.

ROSE
What’s all the commotion down here…

Rose turns and sees Annabella.

ROSE
Oh my… (Running over to hug and kiss Annabella) Bella, honey.

ANNABELLA
I missed you all like crazy. I couldn’t wait to get home.

GIOVANNI
I thought you weren’t coming home for a couple weeks, honey.

ANNABELLA
I thought so, too. Then they canceled a photo shoot I was supposed to do, and when my agents said I didn’t have anything left on the schedule I decided to make a couple plane arrangements on the sly.

ROSE
Well, you certainly surprised us. (Goes toward the kitchen) We need to make a pot of coffee.

ANNABELLA
Mom, don’t bother. I’m fine. I got some sleep on board the flight back. Don’t ask me how, but I did it.

ROSE
Well, we need some coffee. Right, Giovanni?

GIOVANNI
Speak for yourself, mia moglie.

ANNABELLA
I was able to get an earlier flight to Chicago. Then I got my car out of storage and drove out to Somerset. I figured I’d surprise you guys… I didn’t think you’d be asleep.

GIOVANNI
Oh, we weren’t asleep…

ANNABELLA
You weren’t…

She sees Giovanni’s smile and Rose snickering, and Annabella covers her ears.

ANNABELLA
Oh guys, more information than needed…

ROSE
(Changing the subject)
How was the trip back?

ANNABELLA
Not bad. The nice thing about getting in the skies and getting back to America is no one knows who I am here. It’s only when I get to Italy that I become Annabella, the supermodel.

GIOVANNI
Hey, a few people in the States know who you are. It’s not that bad, is it?

ANNABELLA
Naa. (Hears knock on door) Who could be… oh no, did I alert the police?

ROSE
You may have, I’ll check it out.

Rose goes to the back door and sees Scott there. She opens the door.

ROSE
Lt. Garfield! Come on in…

Scott enters the kitchen area.

SCOTT
Don’t mind if I do, Rose. I thought I’d check out the scene. The security company notified us there was an alarm tripped?

ANNABELLA
I’m afraid I tripped it.

Scott turns to see Annabella’s smiling face. Light music plays as we change scenes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Taylor’s apartment

Taylor and Victoria are in the middle of a conversation and Joanne’s name has come up.

TAYLOR
Was it that obvious?

VICTORIA
Well, when Joanne left and the other nurses got there everything started to kick up once again.

TAYLOR
I’m sorry if I appeared a little rude. I don’t want to talk about Joanne, if you get my drift.

VICTORIA
Nothing we can do to help out?

TAYLOR
No, Tori. It’s going to take an awful lot to fix. (Pauses) The less said, the better.

VICTORIA
So the best thing to do is just not talk about it. (Pause) Okay.

TAYLOR
I’m going to go crash for a while, all right? Wake me before you go.

VICTORIA
You got it. This couch looks comfy.

Victoria sits down and lays her head back on the couch arm as music plays. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

Back at Somerset Hospital, Nick has awakened somewhat but is still very groggy. Patrick is looking Nick over as a light melody plays in the background.

PATRICK
I’d say we’re dealing with a concussion here, but I’m waiting for the diagnosis to come in from upstairs.

The nurse checking with Bernard’s comes into the ER.

PATRICK
Any word?

NURSE
The bartender on duty didn’t see Nick. They called Bernard and he also hadn’t seen Nick at the bar earlier tonight.

NICK
(Still groggy)
I feel like I fell from five stories.

PATRICK
Fell?

It now dawns on Patrick what really happened. He realizes Nick wasn’t attacked, nor was he even at Bernard’s.

PATRICK
(Leans down)
By any chance, you didn’t fall out of bed, did you?

Nick is slowly nodding.

NICK
I didn’t think adults could fall out of bed, but I see it’s possible.

PATRICK
What the hell were you doing to make you fall out of bed?

NICK
Just having a sweet dream.

It is now obvious to the audience that Nick’s crash out of bed was the result of a dream he was having about the mystery woman, and that she wasn’t even in Somerset.

PATRICK
(Looks incredulous)
You better have been dreaming about Jessica Alba to make you fall out of bed like that.

NICK
She wasn’t Jessica Alba. (Smiles broadly) But damn close.

Alana comes in with the test results.

ALANA
Here you are, Patrick. I think your diagnosis is correct.

PATRICK
(Looks at the test results)
Well, so it is. Mr. Barclay, slight concussion, nothing major. But it has earned you a stay tonight with us at the Skeleton Hotel. You’ll get room service, a free continental breakfast…

NICK
All the nurses fawning over me that I want?

Alana kisses Nick’s forehead and strokes his hair.

ALANA
Especially that.

NICK
How long am I going to be out of commission?

PATRICK
It shouldn’t be bad. You’ll be groggy for a day or so, then you should slowly improve. I’d say take it easy for a while, though, like say the next several days.

NICK
Oh, don’t worry about that. I don’t plan on going anywhere.

The music builds behind Nick, Patrick and Alana as the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Petterino house

Scott has seen Annabella for the first time and has given her a hug.

SCOTT
Well, I’ll be damned… Welcome home, Annabella.

Annabella gives Scott a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek.

ANNABELLA
I can see you haven’t changed much.

SCOTT
It’s only been four months since you’ve been gone, right? What’d you think I’d do, shed the suit for something different?

ANNABELLA
Don’t change. Whatever you do, don’t change. We like you just the way you are.

SCOTT
I like myself the way I am, too. By the way, Annabella, was that your sportscar speeding through downtown?

ANNABELLA
(Gulps) Oh, boy. I didn’t think anyone was paying attention.

Giovanni is worried by now.

GIOVANNI
Annabella Petterino… (wags finger) What did we say about speeding with the car?

ANNABELLA
You never said anything, Dad.

GIOVANNI
(Stops and looks at finger before putting it down) Well, so I didn’t. But you still know better.

SCOTT
I had an APB out on your vehicle because it was speeding through downtown Somerset. I canceled the APB just now.

ANNABELLA
Scott, in lieu of a fine or ticket I can make a donation to your favorite police charity. And don’t call that bribing an officer.

SCOTT
You know what that reminds me of when I see high speed.

ANNABELLA
I do. (Lowers head) And I’m sorry.

SCOTT
That‘s… all right. Also, let me take a good friend out for a drink when you’re up for it.

ANNABELLA
And a game of pool?

SCOTT
Pool it is. Listen, I don’t want to intrude on your welcome home, so I’ll let you celebrate in private.

ANNABELLA
I’ll hold you to that drink and a game of pool. Good to see you again.

SCOTT
You too, Bella. Bye, everyone. (He waves and goes out the door)

ROSE
Bye, Lt. Garfield.

Rose watches the door shut before turning to Annabella.

ROSE
Some things never change, right, Annabella?

ANNABELLA
Mom. We’re just friends and we always have been.

Rose smiles as Annabella defends herself, as music plays and the picture fades to black.

EPISODE 15 -- INTRUDER ALERT

SOMERSET EPISODE 15
DRTV airdate: August 1, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Cleypool Mansion

The imposing Cleypool mansion, which is perched on a hill overlooking Somerset, is shown from a distance as the camera pans in.

The scene dissolves to an indoor setting… we see George sitting at his study table taking a look at some financial statements when Zachary comes in wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

ZACHARY
Dad? Hey, I’m back from the hospital.

George looks up and then looks down at Zachary’s foot.

GEORGE
What the hell did they do to you… wrap your ankle in thousands of pieces of bandage? They might as well audition you for The Mummy.

ZACHARY
No, Dad, it’s called a walking boot. Dr. Kurtz and another doctor checked me out and then when I was done at the hospital Dr. Nelson stopped me and thought this might make me feel comfortable.

GEORGE
And how will this help you?

ZACHARY
It’ll help me get around. The doctors told me I wrecked my ankle worse than I thought in the motorcycle accident, and this is the best way I can get around for a while.

GEORGE
Well… at least you’re in one piece. It beats the alternative by a million miles.

ZACHARY
Well, it’s going to involve weekly therapy sessions. Do you think you can get along without me here at the house for that long?

George looks up from his paperwork with a “you know better” face.

GEORGE
You know better than to ask that question.

ZACHARY
(Smiling)
I know. I was just testing. I’ll be upstairs if you need me.

Zachary turns to slowly head up the staircase to his room.

George shakes his head, wondering how he raised such a mischievous son. He’s turned back to his paperwork when Fenwick walks in, holding a package.

FENWICK
Master Cleypool, you have a delivery.

George smiles when he sees the box. He looks inside at the package.

GEORGE
Oh, good! This is just what I was waiting for to arrive today.

FENWICK
What good would a newspaper be to you?

George looks at the package, but when he hears that from Fenwick his voice rises a bit and his face shoots up to look at Fenwick.

GEORGE
Did you look inside this box?

FENWICK
Absolutely not, sir. I don’t snoop around in what you’re doing.

Fenwick shows George the sides of the box, which are a bit transparent.

FENWICK
And besides, Master Cleypool, any old oaf can see that’s a newspaper in the package.

George realizes the paper shows through.

GEORGE
Uh… right. Okay, Fenwick. Thank you as always.

FENWICK
No problem, sir.

Fenwick turns and leaves the room as George opens the package.

We see inside there is a newspaper. It is not a copy of The Somerset Register. Instead, it is an edition of The Kansas City Star whose date we cannot see.

GEORGE
Beautiful. This is just the ammunition I need.

Sinister music plays as the picture fades to black.

The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Giovanni’s

Although Rose and Giovanni have gone home for the evening, the action is heating up around the bar area and at some of the tables.

Victoria and Taylor come in and grab one of the booths surrounding the bar. The two are headed for a girls night out after work.

TAYLOR
This was a great idea you had.

VICTORIA
Hey, don’t expect any special treatment other than the drink specials. Mom and Dad could really get in trouble if they comped everything.

TAYLOR
Your parents are by the book, aren’t they?

VICTORIA
(Smiles) You know, Zachary asked me that same question this afternoon. I told him that Mom and Dad wanted to see me succeed. They cared about my performance in high school… I always got good grades…

TAYLOR
And they cared that you came out on the right side of the law, right?

VICTORIA
They never once thought I’d stray. The worst thing I ever did was briefly smoke when I was in high school. I did it for a bit, and I hated it.

TAYLOR
Well then, WHY did you do it?

VICTORIA
Is this an anti-smoking commercial coming on? (Laughs) No, I’ve been pretty much the good girl all my life. If I hadn’t been, my Catholic school teachers would have killed me.

TAYLOR
Well, you’ll be fine. (Pauses) What do you have to do to get a drink around here?

VICTORIA
Signal Charlie, that’s what.

She signals Charlie at the bar, and a waitress is sent over to the table.

TAYLOR
You’re good. (Laughs)

VICTORIA
Helps to know the help. Let’s get a drink before the other nurses get here.

As the waitress comes over to take Taylor and Victoria’s order, the music plays and the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Petterino house

Rose and Giovanni are at home quietly spending some time alone after a day at the restaurant. Giovanni and Rose have a bottle of zinfandel opened up and are sharing the contents.

GIOVANNI
You know, I’m glad we have a capable night staff that can step in and manage the place if we decide to have a night at home.

Rose smiles, looking around.

ROSE
You bet. And the house is all to ourselves. Tori told me she was headed out with Taylor this evening and a couple other nurses might join them.

Rose moves in closer.

ROSE
And Tori said she might crash at Taylor’s if she’s had too much to drink.

Giovanni gets the hint and he snuggles in closer to Rose.

GIOVANNI
Did I ever tell you that you’re as delectable as the moment I laid eyes on you in college?

ROSE
All the time. But do it again.

GIOVANNI
Okay.

He leans in to kiss Rose and soon their passion has them heading up the staircase with the bottle of wine. The music rises in volume and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Somerset Register

We fade in on the Register offices, where Mike is busy working on his latest masterpiece… only he doesn’t think it’s one.

His editor, Norman Vickery, is there, and Norman senses Mike’s displeasure.

NORMAN
(Checking in at Mike’s cubicle)
How’s the city commission story coming?

MIKE
Good. But it’s not going to be an award-winning story, if that’s what you’re wondering.

NORMAN
No one expects it to be.

MIKE
Good, because it’s done.

Mike pushes a button on keyboard to send the story over to editing.

MIKE
Take a look at it and see what you think.

Norman sits down, taps a few keys to enter the editing system, and looks over the copy.

NORMAN
Fair enough. (Peruses screen) This isn’t bad, Mike. Granted, it’s city commission votes…

MIKE
How the heck did reporters like Steve Slade investigate the mob in this town and I end up with the city commission?

NORMAN
You know the answer to that, Mike. Somerset isn’t the town it was 30-some years ago, and be grateful for that.

MIKE
Oh, I know. I’m just waiting for a big story to come along. Any story that I can sink my teeth into and give it a good ride. I wish Jack Martin would hurry up with details of his proposed Project X.

Norman looks a bit surprised.

NORMAN
And what makes you think Jack will be your savior?

MIKE
Well, he has the backing of a lot of people in this town… well, with the exception of one, and even he’s not as big a problem as he could be.

NORMAN
(Laughs) Just wait, Mike. Eventually you’ll get your front-page scoop and a trip to New York to work your dream job.

Norman stands up and walks away.

NORMAN
Now get outta here and go have a beer to cool off.

MIKE
Sounds like a great idea.

Mike shuts off his computer and settles back into the cubicle.

MIKE
And it can’t happen soon enough.

Light music plays as we change scenes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Bernard’s

Giovanni’s is hopping as is Bernard’s, as the Somerset restaurant district is busy. Scott is in the bar area nursing a a beer and talking with Bernard about the goings-on in Somerset.

SCOTT
Ahh, just what I need after a day behind a desk reading police reports.

BERNARD
There’s more where that came from, you know that.

SCOTT
Oh, keep the tap flowing. (Pauses) You been having any problems with the graffiti-mongers out there, Bernard?

BERNARD
I saw Mike’s story on the waterfront activity, but I think I’m too far back from the river. For the most part they leave me alone. They know that this restaurant draws a good crowd and they stay away.

SCOTT
I wish that we didn’t have this problem here. If we didn’t, then my track record as lieutenant would be spotless.

Bernard recalls the old days.

BERNARD
You know it beats the old days. I used to work at the Hayloft and Bill Greeley would tell me all sorts of stories. Hell, I saw the stuff firsthand. When you’re dealing with kids spraying paint cans on walls, then the crime rate isn’t that bad here.

SCOTT
I hear you.

He finishes his beer and gets up from the bar area.

SCOTT
Actually, I changed my mind. I’m going to head home and enjoy the rest of my night. You have a good evening, my friend. Are you out of here yet?

BERNARD
Naaa, I’m here a little while longer. I’ll keep your seat warm if you choose to come back.

SCOTT
I think I’ll go home, read the Register and count my blessings. (Waves goodbye as he leaves) So long.

BERNARD
Take care, my friend.

Scott heads outside the restaurant. He is headed across the street to a parking lot when he notices a car coming awfully fast down the street.

The car is a red convertible, and it slows down as it approaches the intersection. The light turns green, so the car speeds up once again past 40 in what is easily a 20 zone.

SCOTT
What the hell?

He goes out to his dashboard to pull out the radio. Pressing down on the button, he begins to speak.

SCOTT
All units on duty, be on the lookout for a red convertible that may be speeding toward you. Couldn’t get the license plate, but the car looks like it’s going about 20 or 25 over the limit.

The music builds and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

CUT TO -- Giovanni’s

Mike comes into the restaurant and sits at the bar, ordering a beer. From their table, Victoria and Taylor notice Mike and Victoria strikes up a conversation.

VICTORIA
I thought I’d see you here with Alana, Mike.

Mike turns and smiles.

MIKE
Nope, not tonight. I’m nursing a brew myself.

Mike notices Joanne coming in.

MIKE
Then again, maybe not. (Stands up and hugs Joanne) Hey there, back for another go-round?

JOANNE
It was a long day at the office. Got time?

MIKE
I’m all ears.

Victoria has fun watching Mike and Joanne talking… but then she turns to look at Taylor, whose demeanor has suddenly turned a bit sullen.

VICTORIA
Oh oh. Why do I not want to light a match in this room?

TAYLOR
Relax, Tori. Once the other nurses get here, we’ll dissolve into our own conversation.

Taylor looks over at the bar.

TAYLOR
And she’ll be far, far away from here.

Taylor takes a drink from her martini glass as Victoria takes in the situation. The music becomes a bit lighter as we change scenes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Petterino house

In the Petterino house, Giovanni and Rose are upstairs basking in the afterglow after a round of lovemaking. The two are in bed, snuggled against each other.

He heads downstairs, where he sees a shadowy figure trying to mess with the security system. It’s hard to make out the figure and whether that person is there to rob the house.

GIOVANNI
Hands up, you… (He raises the bat over his head)

The lights instantly come on, and Giovanni’s face drops.

GIOVANNI
Oh my…

ABRUPT CUT TO -- Bernard’s

Bernard is serving a customer when Nick walks in.

BERNARD
Hey, Nick. Welcome in tonight. What will you have?

Nick looks a little lost, but he knows his drink.

NICK
Make a mean Manhattan. I sure could use one.

BERNARD
Coming right up.

We see the camera from Nick’s point of view, staring ahead at the wall.

The camera switches back to a shot of Nick at the bar.

NICK
Kinda slow around here tonight.

BERNARD
It’s picked up in the last couple hours.

Nick takes his Manhattan, but as he’s about to drink he hears a familiar voice.

WOMAN
Hey, hot stuff… you wanna share a vodka with me?

The camera, once again from Nick’s point of view, whirls around. In back of Nick is the mystery woman sitting at a table, wearing a glittery silver cocktail dress.

NICK
Oh my God…

It is the same mystery woman he met in Washington. But how did she find him? Could it really be her?

The woman crosses her legs and sips seductively from her glass.

WOMAN
Why don’t you come back and share your Manhattan with me?

NICK
There’s no better time than the present, right? I can’t believe you found me, we didn’t even…

Nick jumps off his stool and runs toward the camera with his glass. Before he can get to the woman’s table, however, he hits what appears to be an imaginary wall with a thudding sound.

The picture temporarily blacks out.

CUT TO -- Nick’s bedroom

Nick is in his bed, and he has fallen with a crash to the floor. Before he can get up, the nightstand and the lamp topple over onto his head.

Emerging from under the pile, Nick takes his hand and feels the top of his head before pulling his hand away. On his hand he notices blood.

As the music builds in intensity, Nick quickly fumbles for his cell phone and tries to get up, all the while calling 911. He is halfway up when he feels very dizzy and collapses onto the floor.

Music reaches a crescendo as the picture immediately blacks out.

EPISODE 14 -- LOVE AND REHAB

SOMERSET EPISODE 14
DRtv Airdate: July 31, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Exterior shot of City Hall

It is the same day in Somerset as the afternoon wears on.

Nick is at his office, having gotten back in the day before and taken the rest of the day off to recharge his batteries.

We fade in on Nick as he is sitting at his desk, staring blankly ahead at the computer screen and trying to do some work.

Not surprisingly, his thoughts keep going back to Washington and to the bar. As he imagines her flowing red hair and smile, he rests his head on his hands and wonders how the heck he's going to get through the day.

Jack comes to the doorway. Nick doesn’t see Jack standing there, and Jack looks amused at Nick being lost in space while looking at his monitor.

JACK
They say a watched computer screen can make you go blind if you stare at it.

Nick is startled and nearly falls out of his chair.

NICK
Hey, Jack! Thanks for about scaring me half to death.

Jack shuts the door behind him, laughing all the while.

JACK
I could have said a watched computer screen could sometimes explode. Now how would THAT have been?

Nick laughs and drinks from his coffee cup.

NICK
At this stage of the game, I’d still be lost in thought.

JACK
I was just on the way back from Scott’s office and thought I'd drop in and see how the convention went.

Nick puts a hand on a big stack of papers sitting next to his desk.

NICK
All this reading material right here. Want to join in?

JACK
Oooo... (takes one step back from the desk) I’ve got my own reading to do, thanks. How did the convention go?

NICK
You really want to know, don’t you?

JACK
Oh, come on. The last I talked to you the convention was in full swing and you were going to a bar to unwind. What could possibly have happened?

Nick gives Jack a look with his face, shakes his head and covers his eyes.

JACK
You’re right. Maybe I DON’T want to know this.

NICK
Actually it was fine. Until the end.

Jack gets a quizzical look on his face as the picture fades to black.

The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

Zachary, who came into the hospital with Victoria noticing him at the end of the Wednesday episode, is in an exam room being checked out by Patrick and by Tyler Nelson, who specializes in orthopedics.

Tyler is looking over Zachary’s injured left ankle. It's obvious that Zachary is in some pain, but he's making do as the doctors continue their exam.

TYLER
It looks like you shattered part of the ankle in that fall. Before you wonder, though, I'd say that the motorcycle accident caused part of this damage. You said you suffered this injury in a pickup basketball game?

ZACHARY
The first injury, yes.

TYLER
You should have had that injury checked out fully instead of assuming the pain would go away. The fact your ankle was weaker as a result of that injury didn’t help matters.

ZACHARY
So in other words, if I'd have zigged instead of zagged I wouldn't have fallen off the bike and busted my ankle.

PATRICK
Well, Tyler thinks you you weakened the bone to the point where one fall of any sort would have caused a big problem. I'd say -- and I would have to concur with Tyler on this -- you're looking at several weeks of rehab.

Zachary grimaces at the thought.

ZACHARY
Damn. Dad's just going to be thrilled at this.

PATRICK
He'll be fine, Zachary. You're still here and that's what is important to him.

Patrick goes over to the phone and dials out to the nurses station.

PATRICK
Yes, Tori, Could I have you come in and bandage up Zachary? (Nods) Thanks. See you in a bit then.

TYLER
I think we’re all set, Patrick. Thanks for consulting on this with me.

PATRICK
Not a problem. Zachary, you’re checked out of the Skeleton Hotel, so have a good day and we'll see you in a week or so to check the ankle again.

ZACHARY
Thanks.

As the doctors leave, Zachary is frustrated by the thought his ankle will be in rehab for several weeks and he slams his hand on the table.

At that point Victoria walks in and is slightly surprised.

VICTORIA
Are you trying to injure something else?

Zachary shoots Victoria a look as if to say “very funny”.

ZACHARY
You’re just the person I’m looking for, actually.

Victoria’s eyes widen as the scene changes with accompanying music.

DISSOLVE TO -- Cleypool Mansion

George is on the phone with a client going over a business deal as Fenwick walks in. Fenwick waits while George completes the call.

GEORGE
I’ll have my attorneys get in touch with you on this. It sounds pretty promising and I think it fits in really well with our north-end development.

We see George pause and talk again.

GEORGE
Yes, that’s going very well. I still have a valid interest in downtown, but I’m biding my time while I wait. I’ve got a good healthy interest in this suburban project. Plenty of retail and homes.

George finishes up.

GEORGE
All right. I’ll be in touch, then. Thanks. (He puts down the phone) What’s going on, Fenwick?

FENWICK
Nothing, Master Cleypool. I had wondered if you’d heard anything more on Master Zachary.

GEORGE
Not really. He was sprung from the hospital but then he had to go back this morning for another checkup.

FENWICK
An emergency checkup?

GEORGE
No, thankfully. This was planned, and I sincerely hope they get the damn checkup right this time around. (Phone rings) I have to take this.

FENWICK
Right, sir. Keep me posted, please.

Fenwick walks out of the room and George picks up the phone.

GEORGE
Cleypool? (Pauses) Ah, good! So that will be here later today? Excellent.

George grins as he continues the conversation with the music building in the background. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

Out in the waiting area at Somerset Hospital, Patrick is looking at a couple charts when Susannah appears in the lobby.

SUSANNAH
Well, if it isn’t Somerset's most handsome doctor at work.

Patrick looks at Susannah, but then he has fun with her a bit.

PATRICK
Where? Where is he? (Turns to look at Susannah) Did you mean me?

SUSANNAH
You don't see Dr. McDreamy around here anywhere, do you?

PATRICK
Please, Susie. I preferred Dr. Ross.

Patrick laughs, hugs Susannah and exchanges a quick kiss with her.

PATRICK
Soooo... What brings you to the hospital... and don't tell me it's another checkup.

SUSANNAH
Nonsense. I’m feeling fine, and I have been since my unscheduled visit to this place.

PATRICK
Does that mean you came to see… ME?

SUSANNAH
Well, I WAS in the neighborhood… and I wondered if you had time to catch a quick bite to eat. Or have you eaten already?

PATRICK
I see. Checking out your new office digs at Martin, I take it?

SUSANNAH
I'm on my way over to do it as we speak. Joanne suggested I take a look around the property now so I’m not lost when I arrive for my first day at work.

PATRICK
Well, unfortunately I'm on duty... but let me finish rounds for a moment and then we can retire to my office.

SUSANNAH
Ooo, I’m impressed! You get an office and everything?

PATRICK
You bet. Wait here and I'll be right with you.

Susannah smiles as Patrick finishes up with his patients and the music plays lightly. The scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- City Hall

Jack is hearing the story of what Nick went through in Washington and he’s incredulous at what took place.

JACK
Wow. I’ve had a few flirty encounters at parties, but Nicholas… my boy, it sounds like this one took the cake.

NICK
Jack, it wasn’t cake. It was sinfully rich ice cream. A filling piece of pie… a luscious dessert treat. (Shakes his head)

JACK
Making yourself sick, Nick?

NICK
Sick? Are you kidding? I'm making myself hungry thinking about this. Rescue me, Jack.

JACK
And what do you suppose I should do? Become Rachael Ray for 30 minutes so I can make you dessert?

NICK
How about a little moral support, for crying out loud? A little strength here?

JACK
Well, I suppose I COULD do that…

NICK
God, Jack.

Nick thinks back to the woman's red hair and shapely black dress.

NICK
She was beautiful. That hair. That smile. That body. And she even called me out on that.

JACK
The fact you were staring at her body?

NICK
And she had a great sense of humor. A great mind for sarcasm. And… I didn’t even get her name.

That alone sends Jack over the edge. Jack can’t believe Nick forgot the basics, and he points to his heart and makes a stabbing sensation.

JACK
You wound me right here, Nicholas. Did I not teach you the right way to encounter a single, eligible female? When you are at a bar like that, you should always get the woman's name. She never asked you?

NICK
Hard to believe, but no. As it is, she did get whisked out of the bar pretty quickly by her friends.

JACK
Well, if anything, this proves one thing.

NICK
Now this I’m just dying to hear.

JACK
The next time you get names. Places. Faces. Features. Anything... and it also proves you've still got it.

NICK
(Staring ahead at the computer) Yeah. Whatever "it" is.

Jack pats Nick on the shoulder in consolation as Nick continues staring at the screen. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

CUT TO -- Patrick’s office

Susannah and Patrick have retired to his office with food from the cafeteria. As they set the food down, Susannah takes a seat.

SUSANNAH
I thought your offices would be a bit more glamorous than this.

PATRICK
Please. Only the chief of staff gets the cushy quarters. Maybe that’ll be me in five or 10 years. For now, I don’t know.

SUSANNAH
Something tells me you’ll get the job. If your family connections are any good…

PATRICK
That’s just it. Like you, I’m trying to get somewhere in life without the family connections getting in the way. I want to win this job down the line without the name Stanley Kurtz coming up.

SUSANNAH
I got a job without the name Sam Lucas coming into the conversation. I think you can do the same thing.

PATRICK
Let’s hope so. So when do you start your new gig with Jack?

SUSANNAH
I told him I'd come aboard on Tuesday. I'm still getting some things squared away at the house and realizing that Grant's Preserve is a nice place to live.

PATRICK
You definitely have a nice home, what I’ve seen of it anyway.

SUSANNAH
How about you? Where are you at now?

PATRICK
This is my home. (Laughter) All kidding aside, it feels like it. I'm actually in a condo myself here in downtown Somerset. Seventh floor of the Woodruff Building.

SUSANNAH
That's a rehabbed skyscraper, isn't it?

PATRICK
About 15 stories tall and built in the 1940s. Just restored a few years ago. You'll have to come over and see it.

SUSANNAH
That I will.

She’s having trouble stifling a yawn so she finally lets one out, “offending” Patrick.

PATRICK
What, now I’m boring?

SUSANNAH
Relax. You never could be boring.

PATRICK
Whoa, is your energy level down that far?

SUSANNAH
Naa, it’s just been a whirlwind few days and I just need to get more sleep, that’s all. But who’s got the time, right?

Patrick nods in approval as Susannah hides the fact that she had an awful nightmare the night before. The music swells to its climax, albeit a bit ominously knowing what we do about Susannah. The scene changes after a short interlude.

DISSOLVE TO -- Exam room

In the exam room at Somerset Hospital, Victoria is wrapping Zachary's injured ankle.

ZACHARY
Anyhow, I just wanted to apologize for the way my dad behaved toward all of you when I was last here.

VICTORIA
(Looks up)
He didn't harm me. I've been around demanding men all of my life.

ZACHARY
What, the doctors at this place? Don't tell me your father is that demanding.

VICTORIA
In a way, he is. But it's a good way. He wants the best from his children. So far, I'm the one that's stayed here and worked very hard, so I guess I get all the spoils from it.

ZACHARY
Is that what they call them? I'm not an only child, but I'm the only one that chose to stay in Somerset and deal with Dad's wrath.

Victoria looks up from her bandage work and smiles.

VICTORIA
You're strong enough. You can take it.

ZACHARY
Thanks... (eyes name tag) Victoria. Do you have a last name to go with the tag and the face?

VICTORIA
Petterino.

ZACHARY
(Making the connection) Are you... Giovanni's daughter?

VICTORIA
One of two… why do you ask? Do you know Annabella from your travels overseas or something?

ZACHARY
No reason. I love your dad's restaurant.

VICTORIA
YOU’VE been to Giovanni’s? I would think The Finial is more your speed.

ZACHARY
Five-star restaurants can be overrated.

VICTORIA
Thanks. It may not be the country club, but it's home.

ZACHARY
Please, Victoria. That's what I like about it. It's NOT the country club.

Zachary gets up off the table and limps his way out to the lobby area with Victoria, continuing their conversation.

VICTORIA
I'm surprised you'd say that.

ZACHARY
Well, there is an awful lot you don't know about me. (Checks watch) Gotta run. Thanks again.

As Zachary walks away, Victoria holds the clipboard tightly against her and smiles. Light music plays as the picture fades to black.

EPISODE 13 -- THE MORNING AFTER

SOMERSET EPISODE 13
Airdate: July 30, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- An athletic club in downtown Somerset

This episode of Somerset opens up at Ultra Body, which is a health club in downtown Somerset within striking distance of both Somerset Hospital and Martin Enterprises.

We dissolve to a locker room area where Alana and Joanne are coming in after a workout of roughly 45 minutes. Both are sweating a bit after exercise, and each of them has a bottle of water that they are drinking from before they hit the shower.

Joanne is the first to speak, once she regains her breath.

JOANNE
Wow. It’s been a long time since I’ve had that good a workout. Thanks for the suggestion last night.

ALANA
It was really good to see you. We hardly ever connect because we’re on insane schedules.

JOANNE
Yeah… I’m more of a 9 to 5 or a 10 to 6 girl and you’re…

Joanne drinks water and laughs a bit.

JOANNE
Coming and going at all hours of the night.

ALANA
Hey, it’s all right. I need the release like I had last night. I got to talk with you a bit and I got to put up with Wagner.

JOANNE
I think that man cares about you. Don’t tell me you’re stringing him along.

Alana vigorously shakes her head as if to say no way.

ALANA
Not a chance. Truth is, Joanne, I don’t know what exactly I want. I know it’s about time to hop back on the treadmill…

JOANNE
After having just come off of it?

It dawns on Joanne what Alana meant.

JOANNE
Ahh, I get it. You’re saying you think it’s high time to make yourself available again.

ALANA
Is that so bad?

JOANNE
I wouldn’t say it’s bad. (Drinks from water bottle) Then again, you’re talking to someone who dates what, maybe once or twice a year…

ALANA
Just you wait, Joanne. Your time is coming. Or is Jack working you that hard?

Joanne shakes her head as she grabs her equipment bag and gets some stuff out of it.

JOANNE
I can’t complain. I’ve been with Martin Enterprises for over 15 years, right out of college. It wasn’t until six years ago that I took over the role of Jack’s executive assistant. Jack has been with me through some good times.

ALANA
And?

JOANNE
And a lot of bad. (Drinks water) But enough about me. It’s not like I’ve been abusing drugs or drinking too hard or anything. Besides, I've had some steady company as of late.

ALANA
(Laughing)
You were putting the drinks away last night.

JOANNE
(Laughing herself)
I’ll have you know I had three whiskey sours and I was in the company of two really nice guys last night. Including your future husband.

Alana has had enough and playfully whacks Joanne with a towel as Joanne laughs.

ALANA
Go easy on me. I think all of Somerset knows by now what happened last night. (Pause) Why don’t you ask Scott out? He seems like he’s an eligible bachelor.

JOANNE
Ah, I'll keep Norman's company. Besides, Scott isn't ready yet. He’s gone through some rough times himself.

Light music plays in the background as the scene winds down.

ALANA
Look at us. We’re both wrecks when it comes to a social life.

Joanne laughs as she finishes the water bottle and heads for the shower.

JOANNE
We’re paid pretty well for what we do, though.

ALANA
You got that right.

The music builds as Alana follows Joanne, ready to shower up before she goes to the hospital for her shift. The picture fades to black.

The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

A bit later in the day, we dissolve to the fourth floor nurses desk as Victoria is on duty answering phones.

VICTORIA
Yes, Mr. Hennessey, your test results just came back. Dr. Kurtz is waiting to talk to you...

Victoria cradles the phone on her shoulder as she juggles a few files.

VICTORIA
No, I can't look at the results without you coming in. Dr. Kurtz will have to take care of that.

Victoria briefly pauses as Alana walks in.

VICTORIA
OK, we'll see you in a bit. Thanks.

As Victoria puts down the phone she smiles, obviously knowing what went on last night.

ALANA
Oh geez. I suppose word has gotten out all around the hospital?

Victoria shakes her head no.

VICTORIA
Alana, no one's really wondering what happened. I just know you went to meet Mike for a beer because Mom and Dad were talking this morning.

ALANA
(Buries her head in her hands and shakes her head)
Ohhh... I'll never live this down.

Then Alana raises her head and smiles.

ALANA
Other than that, things went all right. Come, I'll tell you all about it.

Victoria’s face instantly brightens.

VICTORIA
Oooo, the inner sanctum once again? I'm glad I'm about to take my break.

ALANA
It's not juicy, but it's news at least... no pun intended.

Victoria pretends to hold her stomach in pain.

VICTORIA
Oh, that was bad. Bad.

Playful music can be heard as Victoria follows Alana to the nurses lounge. The scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Police station

We directly cut away from the scene to the police station, where Lt. Garfield is at his desk looking over some police reports when Jack appears at the door.

JACK
(Raps the door)
Knock knock, lieutenant. Is this a bad time or is it always a good time in Somerset these days?

Scott looks up and smiles.

SCOTT
Hey, Jack. This will give me a chance to put the paperwork down and talk a little business with the community. Have a seat.

Jack takes Scott’s lead and sits down by Scott’s desk, putting down his briefcase in the process.

JACK
Don't mind if I do. Saw you up at the bar with Mike last night but you really didn’t talk a lot about that when you came back to talk to us.

SCOTT
Well, you looked pretty busy yourself. How is Susannah fitting in?

JACK
I talked to her this morning. (Pauses) She didn’t get a good night’s sleep last night, or so she said. It was probably the unfamiliarity of being in a strange bedroom.

SCOTT
That will probably change. She’s been in the house for what, all of a few days?

JACK
Yeah. She said living alone in a strange place will take some getting used to, but she’ll manage.

SCOTT
Well, tell her welcome to Somerset. (Pauses) Actually, I think I was keeping Mike company until his date for the night showed up.

Jack’s eyes widen a bit.

JACK
Really? The good journalist is keeping company with a woman? Alert the media.

Jack laughs when he realizes what he said.

JACK
Wait, that didn't come out quite right.

Scott chuckles a bit as he and Jack share a laugh. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

Alana and Victoria are in the nurses' lounge as they sip an early afternoon coffee and Alana changes into suitable nurses' attire to begin her shift.

VICTORIA
I didn’t know you were going to go over to Giovanni's last night. It kind of surprised me.

ALANA
What, that I have a social life? I head out to the bar a couple times a week, you know that. I wasn’t going to look for Mike, if that’s what you’re wondering. As it is, I ran into Joanne and we were just at the health club having a noon workout.

VICTORIA
How’s she doing? Jack running her ragged?

ALANA
Well, it was good to talk to her. I’m on one floor of the apartment building and she’s on a higher floor, so our paths don’t cross that much.

VICTORIA
You have a workout partner, at least.

ALANA
Well, we used to work out a lot… then Joanne got busy with a few things Jack had her doing and all of the other stuff that happened. Now she says she wants to get that part of her life back. I can’t blame her one bit.

VICTORIA
And it got you out of the apartment. (Laughs)

ALANA
Well, considering I really didn't have that much to do... it was either that or read a few more chapters of Harry Potter...

VICTORIA
Deathly Hallows?

ALANA
Please. Not even finished with the second book yet. And DON'T tell me how it ends.

Alana sips from her coffee cup and sits down.

ALANA
Anyways, Mike is a nice guy. I just don't know if I'm ready to dip a toe into the dating pool once again.

VICTORIA
You can't let the actions of one relationship slow you down forever, Alana.

ALANA
Oh, I know that.

Alana pauses to sip her coffee again.

ALANA
Nick knew it too.

A bit of “stinging” piano music plays along with the light music. This is the first on-screen mention that Alana’s ex was Nick. As the music builds, The scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Police station

We shift back to the police station as Jack and Scott are chatting about city matters.

JACK
I wanted to show you a photo of one building in particular that I’m interested in, and you tell me if there's anything fishy going on over there.

Scott recognizes the photo right away -- it is The Peoples Building.

SCOTT
The Peoples Building? Jack, that's one of Somerset's oldest buildings. It hasn't been used in years, you know that.

JACK
But it HAS avoided the wrecking ball. I'm afraid George will get his hands on it and tear it down. That's why I'm interested so much in the property. It's a catalyst for what I want to do.

SCOTT
Care to share, by any chance?

JACK
Due time, Scott. Due time. I'm still getting everything in order.

Scott puts his folders down and leans in, meaning to give Jack some advice.

SCOTT
Jack, need I remind you... you've got Wagner fishing around wanting to get clues, you've got Nick tied in knots over this and he just took over city management of Somerset not too long ago. You’d like everyone to know the crime rate is low in Somerset, wouldn’t you?

JACK
Scott, relax. Both Mike and Nick are aware of what's up. I haven't filled them in on the full story yet, but suffice to say they are very interested in hearing it.

SCOTT
Is there a history behind all of this?

JACK
Lieutenant… more than you'll ever know. (Smiles)

Scott takes it all in as the camera slowly focuses in on him and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Police station

Back at the police station, Scott and Jack are still going over city details, but the conversation is slowly turning in another direction.

JACK
Once I get everything in order, I intend to let the city know of my plans. Until then...

SCOTT
Aren't you afraid that Cleybank Corporation's acting behind the scenes?

Jack waves his hand at Scott.

JACK
I know, Scott. I’ve got resources. Well-placed friends. They're going to tell me if they spot anything fishy when it comes to his activities.

SCOTT
Well, then! I think you've got the bases covered, my friend. Keep me posted.

Jack rises up and grabs his briefcase.

JACK
I will. (He stops) Oh, by the way... I did overhear last night that your favorite model is returning to Somerset?

SCOTT
Not you too, Jack Martin. (Shakes his head)

JACK
Relax. I won't give you a hard time about it. You and Joanne looked like you were having decent conversation last night.

SCOTT
Joanne and I are friends, yes. And for the record, Annabella and I have been friends for a while now. You know that.

JACK
I know. I also know Giovanni will be very happy to have two of his kids under one roof. Has Giovanni gotten any indication yet when Annabella's coming home?

SCOTT
It’s going to be in the next couple weeks or so. She's finishing up an assignment modeling cosmetics over in Rome. Ah, the glamorous life.

JACK
Indeed. Must be nice.

The music builds as Scott and Jack shake hands and Jack turns to leave. Before he can leave, the scene changes.

DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital

Alana and Victoria are finishing up their conversation in the nurses lounge.

ALANA
Tori, Nick and I dated for two years... it didn't end well.

VICTORIA
Well, you guys are okay now.

ALANA
Yeah, now we are. But at the time, we were accusing each other of wanting to put our careers ahead of our personal lives. Nick was getting heavy into politics and I was getting into a lot of hours in nursing.

VICTORIA
Precisely. You guys let your careers get in the way.

ALANA
But only after I broke up with Nick. It wasn't easy, trust me. I think we both wanted to dip into our careers to keep us from going stir crazy.

VICTORIA
Relax. Nick adored you. He cared for you. He still does as a friend.

The two are leaving the nurses lounge and heading down the hall.

ALANA
We've been down this road before. Nick has told me it's going to take time for him to get involved again because he feels he screwed things up badly.

VICTORIA
And you?

ALANA
That’s why I'm kind of holding Wagner at arm's length. (Pauses and looks at Victoria) Not a word of this to Wagner. I DO like him, but I'm not ready to throw away a year or two only to find out things aren't going to work.

VICTORIA
Well, you should give it a try. You really should...

She sees Zachary in the waiting area.

VICTORIA
Give it a try, Alana.

Alana notices Victoria looking at Zachary and smiles to herself as if to say take your own advice. The picture fades to black and the credits roll.

EPISODE 12 -- THE ALLURE OF THE NIGHT

SOMERSET EPISODE 12
Airdate: July 29, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey

SCENE ONE

FADE IN -- Washington, D.C.

Instead of the typical piano or taped music that opens each episode, we hear the opening strains of the 1960s classic “Stranger on the Shore” by Acker Bilk.

The melancholy piece sets a perfect background for the scene.

The overhead shot of Washington D.C. appears once again, with the word "Washington" below. We see Nick walking along a city street, presumably back to his hotel room. All of a sudden he stops. He's by the Potomac River and he looks out onto the water.

In the reflection of the water, Nick sees the young woman. He remembers back to earlier that night and the encounter at the bar. We hear a few brief snippets of dialogue from Monday’s 11th episode.

((in flashback))

WOMAN
You wouldn’t be checking me out, would you?

NICK
With that figure? What do you think? Wreck your diet. Now I’ve heard everything.

The woman looks a little incredulous, but in a good way.

WOMAN
What are you implying, hot stuff? That I have a killer body?

NICK
I never said any such thing. (Smiles) Now the red hair, that's another story.

((out of flashback))

The song continues softly behind Nick as he recalls how she whispered in his ear and ran her fingernails down his arm. We also see the young woman laughing and flinging her red hair back.

NICK
Barclay, my boy. (Shakes his head) You blew it. Big time.

Almost on cue, the skies open up with a light rain, and Nick gets a bit drenched by the water. He can only help but laugh at the irony.

NICK
(Looking up)
I know, I know. All that's missing is the umbrella and Gene Kelly.

He continues walking forward.

NICK
Only I'm not singing. Or smiling.

Nick continues walking forward and the camera pulls back from the melancholy scene as the picture fades to black. Instead of hearing the Somerset theme, however, the song continues as we see the city skyline and the Somerset logo appearing.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

This portion is presented today by Original Formula Mr. Clean. The cleaner that cleans your whole house and everything that's in it.

SCENE TWO

FADE IN -- Susannah’s house

The rain that is falling in Washington is also falling in Somerset several hundred miles to the west, courtesy of a storm system that is sweeping through the Midwest.

Susannah is on the front step of her house, having gotten home from her dinner with Jack, and she is watching the lightning far away. We see a car coming down the street and it stops in front of Susannah's house. At first Susannah thinks it's Patrick, but then she sees it's Giovanni.

He gets out of the car and walks up the stairs to Susannah, carrying a dish with him.

GIOVANNI
Buongiorno, Miss Lucas. You selected a good location for your house. You're just several doors down from us.

The two share a warm hug.

SUSANNAH
Giovanni! How are you? Please, call me Susannah. We’re practically neighbors.

GIOVANNI
Quite right. I know you were just in the restaurant tonight with Jack, but I figured I’d stop by and welcome you to the Grant’s Preserve neighborhood.

SUSANNAH
Well come on in out of the rain.

As the two enter Susannah's house, she notices the dish Giovanni has. Susannah takes the dish and heads toward the kitchen table.

SUSANNAH
Let me guess. Mom and Dad wanted you to make a care package for me?

GIOVANNI
Well, between you and Jack Martin, you’ll be fine with people looking in after you. Are you enjoying your time here in Somerset so far?

SUSANNAH
Well, everyone’s so nice here.

GIOVANNI
Don’t worry. You’re not in Stepford. We have our bad sides. (Laughs)

SUSANNAH
Oh, I figured as such. It’s just that I don’t recall a lot about Somerset when I lived here with Mom and Dad, but I know later in life they were ever so glad to get the heck out of here and start over in Oklahoma.

GIOVANNI
You bet. I came to Somerset after the mob stuff went down at Delaney Brands. I lived in New York when we came over to the States, and my father Sergio wanted me to help out in the family business there.

SUSANNAH
Why didn’t you stay in New York? There are so many possibilities there.

GIOVANNI
Well, I wanted to go to college, so I came to Somerset and got to know Jack a lot better.

(He smiles and blows an Italian-style kiss with two fingers and a thumb)

GIOVANNI
Then I fell in love with Rose. Ah, life was good.

SUSANNAH
I bet. No, I was just so surprised when we came down, went to the scenic overlook and saw just how big Somerset had gotten.

GIOVANNI
Sam and Lahoma were very surprised, I bet. When they brought you back here and they saw how much this community had changed. Downtown's much bigger than it was, the cannery is torn down... These houses are on top of it. There’s new development everywhere.

SUSANNAH
I know. I did some research at the library today and I went over some past copies of the Register. There was a shot of downtown from about 1976 and I couldn’t believe it. Then I saw one from 1995 and it was like night and day.

GIOVANNI
Things have changed for the better, that’s for sure.

Light music plays in the background as Susannah smiles. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

(We see “Saturday Nights In the City” title card)

Do you think Genoa City stops on the weekends just because The Young and The Restless doesn’t air? Hardly. Saturdays in Genoa City can be just as fun. Watch Saturday Nights in the City, on the Daytime Royalty weekend lineup.

(We see “Somerset” title card and hear a soft version of the theme)

BILL WOLFF
The second half of Somerset is presented by Metamucil, available in regular and orange flavor. And you could stay regular for the rest of your life.

We'll return to Somerset following station identification.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

SCENE THREE

FADE IN -- Susannah's house

Susannah is talking with Giovanni, but she can’t help but smell the aroma of the dish he brought over.

SUSANNAH
What is in that dish, by the way? It smells heavenly.

GIOVANNI
Rose's spaghetti and meatballs recipe.

SUSANNAH
On top of what I ate there tonight. I have a feeling I’m going to be spoiled rotten.

She takes the dish and puts it in the refrigerator.

SUSANNAH
I'll be sure to have it for lunch tomorrow. Wow, that is powerful stuff. Want a drink for the road?

GIOVANNI
Surprise me with whatever you've got.

SUSANNAH
Well, then… here, catch.

Susannah goes to the refrigerator like she did with Patrick, and she gets out a pop can for herself and Giovanni. She tosses a perfect underhanded strike over to Giovanni.

GIOVANNI
Ah, yes! You have a good arm. I might need you on our restaurant softball team.

Susannah can’t help but laugh.

SUSANNAH
You're the second person trying to recruit my services.

GIOVANNI
Second? The last I knew, Martin Enterprises didn’t have a softball team.

SUSANNAH
No, it wasn’t Martin. Patrick Kurtz already wants me to play.

GIOVANNI
Ah, yes! Dr. Kurtz, Stan and Teri’s son. He stops by the restaurant from time to time.

SUSANNAH
Yes, he said he doesn’t have a lot of free time, but when he does he can’t resist your pasta either.

GIOVANNI
(Smiles)
I have that effect on people.

Susannah laughs as she drinks from the pop can.

SUSANNAH
Well, he’s helped me feel right at home too, and I really like that. He was quite surprised to see us in Somerset, even though I told him I was definitely considering a move here.

GIOVANNI
Well, you did surprise him under those circumstances. Are you having second thoughts about your boss?

SUSANNAH
(Sips from her pop can)
No, not at all! In fact, I'm looking forward to my first day at Martin Enterprises.

GIOVANNI
Well, Jack is looking forward to having you on staff. He wants to bolster his legal presence in Somerset so he can go forward with the big project.

SUSANNAH
I know he wants to go forward with something very big. What do you know?

GIOVANNI
You've come to the wrong place. I don't know a thing. Yet, anyway. We keep pressuring Jack to reveal some of his plans, but he doesn't want to do it yet.

SUSANNAH
Who’s we?

GIOVANNI
Well, myself… Bernard over at Bernard’s Restaurant… the owner of The Riverboat Club… some of the little mom-and-pop shops.

SUSANNAH
Well, he’ll have to spill his guts soon.

GIOVANNI
Sooner rather than later.

Giovanni checks his watch.

GIOVANNI
I better get home before Rose wonders where I am. Enjoy the pasta and if you feel like a home-cooked meal anytime, our kitchen is always open.

SUSANNAH
I will do just that. Where are you guys located?

GIOVANNI
Harriman Court. 9277 Harriman.

Susannah realizes Harriman Court is just down the street a few houses away.

SUSANNAH
(Walks Giovanni back to the door and hugs him tightly)
Well, that's not too far away. I will have to do just that. Have a good night. Thanks for coming down in the rain.

GIOVANNI
No problem, Susannah. Ciao.

He gets in the car and drives back to the street before taking off down towards his home. The rain has gotten a little harder, so Susannah ducks inside her house.

She walks by the kitchen, where the smell of pasta still wafts through the air.

SUSANNAH
(Smells pasta dish)
No, Susannah. Have it tomorrow. It'll keep.

Susannah puts it back in the refrigerator and shuts out the downstairs light before heading upstairs. Light music is playing as Susannah goes up the steps.

DISSOLVE TO -- Giovanni’s

We are at Giovanni’s, where the action is still going despite Giovanni and Rose having gone home for the night.

Scott has left the building, and Joanne has also gone home for the night, but Mike is sharing a drink with Alana. She smiles as she drinks from her beer glass.

ALANA
Wagner, I didn't intend on staying here as long as I did, but I gotta say thanks for the evening of enjoyment.

MIKE
(Takes a swallow of his beer)
You’re welcome. My original invitation was for coffee, but I figured I might see you here.

ALANA
Well, just so you know. I'm not really in the market for a long-term person in my life. Not yet, anyway.

MIKE
No one said anything about this being long-term. I'm just glad I finally got you out of the nurses' gear and into more relaxed clothes.

ALANA
Well, I’m glad I came here tonight. Thanks.

MIKE
Can I do this again sometime soon?

ALANA
One at a time, Wagner. I put a long day in at the hospital. I'm bushed, and I'm going home to bed.

Alana manages a warm smile at Mike.

ALANA
That said, I’d be open to doing this again soon.

MIKE
Do you need an escort home? Are you OK to drive?

ALANA
Of course I am, silly. I just had two beers and I drank slowly.

MIKE
Just remembering what was in the Register recently.

Alana shrugs that off with a chuckle.

ALANA
Oh... the motorbike accident. Don't worry. That driver wasn't drunk either. But I appreciate the offer of an escort.

MIKE
(Stands up and kisses Alana’s hand softly)
Well then, have a good night.

ALANA
Flattery will get you nowhere, Wagner.

This time, her smile is a little warmer and a little more devilish.

ALANA
But it was fun. See ya at the hospital soon.

MIKE
Hopefully just checking on a story.

Alana leaves her seat, while Mike smiles and finishes his beer. Outside the bar Alana looks in, gets a small grin on her face and takes off for her car. The music builds and the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE FOUR

FADE IN -- Petterino house, front porch

At the Petterino house, Giovanni and Rose are on the front porch, snuggled up and listening to the thunder.

GIOVANNI
I can’t believe Tori went to bed so early. She loves the sound of a good thunderstorm in the summer, or so she once told me.

ROSE
She didn't turn in until after 11. She had a hard day today. She’s probably soft asleep with the window open and the rain falling down.

GIOVANNI
She loves her job, and you know it.

ROSE
I know she does. So… how did Susannah enjoy her care package?

GIOVANNI
Well, she's going to eat it tomorrow. I'll let you know when she tells me.

ROSE
(Snuggles in next to Giovanni)
It will be good to have another familiar face in the neighborhood. Another surrogate daughter to spoil.

GIOVANNI
(Laughing)
I better fire up the oven.

ROSE
You’ll be doing a lot of cooking in the next several days, probably.

GIOVANNI
Ah, I can’t help it. Susannah reminds me a lot of Annabella. That feisty attitude...

ROSE
Definitely. (Sighs) I can't wait for Annabella to come home.

GIOVANNI
It will be soon, my love. Soon.

ROSE
Hopefully not another several weeks. She’s already been gone way too long.

GIOVANNI
Well, allow me to try and take your mind off of children that are missing from our lives.

Giovanni leans over and kisses Rose. Slowly she responds to his amorous advances, turning to face him. Giovanni and Rose share a lingering kiss over light, romantic music…

ABRUPTLY CUT TO -- Susannah’s bedroom

The light music gives way to the loud roar of “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence.

We see Susannah in bed, trying to sleep but disturbed by something.

As the thunder and lightning continue, we see Susannah’s face illuminated. The line “I can’t wake up” in the song is choreographed along with the lightning flashes.

Susannah tosses and turns and thrashes about on the bed. It is obvious from the scene that she is having some sort of nightmare.

Finally, she bolts upright with a scream and sweat pouring down her face.

The lightning flashes, causing her to jerk her head to the right and look out the window. She looks left.

Slowly Susannah realizes she is in her own bedroom.
