SOMERSET EPISODE 11
Written by: Steve Ungrey
Airdate: July 28, 2008
SCENE ONE
FADE IN -- Petterino house
Light
music plays as the episode opens with Rose in the kitchen reading the
day’s Somerset Register. Victoria comes in through the back door, having
just arrived home from the hospital.
Rose looks up and removes her glasses, looking at the wall clock.
ROSE
Well, that was a long day at work.
Victoria shuts the door, puts her purse down on the counter and immediately goes to the refrigerator to see if there’s any milk.
VICTORIA
(Opens refrigerator door while talking)
No later than usual, Mom. Did you lose track of time? I was supposed to work until 9.
ROSE
And you left the house at... Did you work a 12-hour day?
VICTORIA
Mom, relax.
She pours herself a milk glass and comes over to the table to sit down.
VICTORIA
I don't work every day... I'm on the schedule just four days a week, and I have three days off.
ROSE
Whatever happened to the 9-to-5 type jobs that were out there?
VICTORIA
(Kisses Rose on the cheek as she takes a seat)
They
disappeared. Just like you and Dad at the restaurant. No, that’s how
the schedule is done. We get 40 hours a week, more if we want it, but
Alana and the senior nurses always make sure we have at least two to
three days off to recharge the batteries.
ROSE
Well, that’s good.
VICTORIA
I know a nurse in cardiology who only works three days a week. Now granted, she’s at the hospital from sunrise to sunset.
ROSE
Well,
as long as you have some time to recharge. Hey, by the way… we got some
good news from overseas. I got an e-mail from Annabella this morning.
She’s coming home for a visit.
VICTORIA
(Looks up from her glass and smiles)
All right! I get to pick on my older sister!
ROSE
Somehow I knew you'd say that. (Laughs) She’s not sure when it’s going to be, but she’s talking about sticking around a while.
VICTORIA
Well, how long was she gone for… three months?
ROSE
All that. She said she booked a ton of work while she was over there and was paid very well for it, but she needs a break.
VICTORIA
I’d like to make a million bucks nursing, that’s for sure. (Laughs)
Rose laughs as the music builds and transitions us out of the scene. The picture fades to black.
The
theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is
pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the
center of the screen.
BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.
This
portion brought to you today by Scope, the minty fresh mouthwash that
leaves your breath with a clean feeling, not the mediciney feeling other
leading mouthwashes provide. Available in several different flavors.

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Washington D.C.
We
see the obligatory cityscape, the title card below that reads
“Washington” and then we dissolve the action back to the bar where Nick
is.
DISSOLVE TO -- J. Sullivan’s
The
action picks up from where it left off on Friday, with a young woman
having come to the bar and sat by Nick. She has long, ruby red hair and
is wearing a short black dress, and it was clear from the get-go on
Friday that Nick was a goner.
Nick is still engaged in conversation with the young woman as she flashes a big smile at him.
WOMAN
So, handsome… what’s a guy like you doing alone at a bar like this?
NICK
Nursing
a drink, waiting to eat and watching a ballgame. (Smiles) I could ask
you the same thing. Do you always come up and sit next to guys watching
baseball?
WOMAN
I loooooove the sport, are you kidding me? I think I got it from my dad.
NICK
Well, your company is welcome. Are you part of the action upstairs?
The woman sips from what by now is her second vodka tonic at the bar.
WOMAN
Yes,
but I had to come downstairs. These barristers' parties can be fun, but
it's worth it to escape the stuffed shirts. Besides, I had to come find
out how my Marlins were doing.
NICK
I might have to give you ground cover out of this bar, you know.
WOMAN
(Smiles)
Why?
NICK
You
realize where you are, right? Washington? The city that has a baseball
team already? Now you won’t get booed by me, of course, but…
WOMAN
(Makes a face as if to say “oh, please” and laughs hysterically)
Oh, handsome, please. Not with the way the Nationals are doing this year. The Marlins are close to first.
NICK
I’m going to take a stab that you’re from Florida?
WOMAN
I lived down there for a while. Graduated from Florida, in fact.
The woman pauses and stands in front of Nick. She puts her hands in the air and sings.
WOMAN
Gimme a G! Gimme a A! Gimme a T…
Nick
laughs as the woman, who still appears to have her wits about her
despite drinking vodka tonics like water, sits back down and exhales.
NICK
You weren’t a cheerleader, were you?
WOMAN
I couldn’t do the splits like that, honey. But I still get excited about Florida.
NICK
So I’m guessing you must be on cloud nine about the basketball team.
WOMAN
Damn
straight. That deserves another drink (motions to the bartender, who is
once again played by Eddie Steeples from “My Name is Earl”). Last year
was rough, but the two years before that were sweet.
NICK
You obviously love vodka, right?
The woman turns and raises her eyes at him.
WOMAN
You got a problem with that, sugar? (Laughs) I’m just teasing. It’ll be my third drink down here, but who cares…
The woman’s cell phone rings.
WOMAN
Doggone it, hold on. (Picks up) Hey, what’s up?
She looks up, as if she’s looking at the party going on.
WOMAN
You
couldn't come downstairs to tell me that? All right, I'll be right up.
(Puts phone away) Hey there, I have to split. My presence is required
back upstairs. (Motions to bartender) Can I settle my tab?
BARTENDER
I would if I could, Miss, but I'm afraid you have no tab.
WOMAN
No tab? What did I do, get these drinks for free…
It suddenly dawns on her. She leans in and kisses Nick on the cheek.
WOMAN
Well
there, hot stuff, you didn’t have to do that for me. (Smiles devilishly
at Nick) Thank you for the vodkas. I promise I’ll come back down for a
nightcap, OK?
NICK
I’ll hold you to it.
The woman
leaves the bar and heads back up the staircase. All the while Nick is
staring, first at the shape and then at the legs as they disappear
upstairs. Nick turns back to the bartender.
BARTENDER
I’m going to have to remember this one. I’ll put it on my list.
NICK
Of what?
BARTENDER
Memorable things I’ve seen. (Smiles) I’ve got a friend who has an even bigger list…
NICK
Wow. Now that’s a ball of supercharged energy.
BARTENDER
You aren‘t kidding. Another drink, sir?
NICK
Can I just have the seltzer button to spray myself off? (Laughs) Yes, I'll take a Manhattan.
As the bartender laughs, he begins preparing another drink and the picture fades to black.
BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Petterino kitchen
Rose is finishing the paper while Victoria finishes her milk glass as light music plays behind the two.
VICTORIA
Mom, have you or Dad ever had any run-ins with George Cleypool?
Rose nearly goes white as a sheet when Victoria asks that question, but she answers it truthfully.
ROSE
(Puts down the paper)
Why do you ask, honey?
VICTORIA
His
son, Zachary, was in a motorcycle accident last night. I hear he lit
into the driver who supposedly caused the accident... then this morning
his son banged his ankle and foot on the hospital bed and suffered a
more serious injury. You'd think we committed malpractice or something.
ROSE
George Cleypool is not a nice man. The sooner you know that, the better.
Victoria is a bit surprised by Rose’s comments.
VICTORIA
Well, did he ever do anything to you or Dad?
ROSE
Numerous
threats. I’m going to tear down the block your restaurant is on and
reshape it my own way. I’ve got my own grand scheme for Somerset and
it’s better than Jack Martin’s. You know, those kinds of things.
VICTORIA
I see.
ROSE
George
and I go way back, along with Giovanni. I’ve known what he’s capable of
for a long time. And I don't like his tone when it comes to
improvements for Somerset. Giovanni is solidly on Jack Martin's side
when it comes to the new Somerset vision.
VICTORIA
The way it looks, Mr. Cleypool doesn't have an ally in town.
ROSE
Oh, he has some allies. But I think Jack has more of a leg to stand on.
Victoria finishes the last of the milk in her glass.
VICTORIA
Well, his son seems nicer. He's almost embarrassed at how his father acts from time to time.
ROSE
I would be too.
Music
builds as Victoria rises to put the milk glass in the area for
dishwashing, and Rose reads the paper. Victoria can’t see Rose’s face,
but Rose is thinking about something. The scene changes.
DISSOLVE TO -- Giovanni’s
Mike
has finished dinner and Scott is sitting at the bar with him, and the
two are keeping Joanne company as she finishes another drink. Mike sees
Alana walking in.
SCOTT
Uh oh. Is this my cue to scram?
MIKE
No, stay. You can stay here and vouch for me.
Mike motions Alana, who smiles and comes over.
ALANA
I see this is where the crime reporters hang out? (Shakes Scott’s hand) Hello, Lt. Garfield, is he bothering you?
SCOTT
No, not at all, Alana. Have a seat and relax.
ALANA
Thank you. Don’t mind if I do. (Sees Joanne) Hey there! (She reaches over and hugs Joanne) Is Martin keeping you busy?
JOANNE
Yeah, but I’m used to it.
ALANA
You up for a noon workout tomorrow?
JOANNE
Yeah.
We haven’t done anything together in a long time. Our hours have been
just so crazy. We’re in the same building, different floors, never see
each other…
ALANA
Well, stick and stay and maybe we can have a
mini girls night out once I’m done with this… this guy. (She points at
Mike and laughs)
SCOTT
I’m going to go over and say hi to Jack for a bit. I’ll be back. (Smiles at Alana and Mike) Have fun, you two.
Scott
smiles at Mike and walks over to Jack and Susannah’s table -- we can’t
see them since they’re not in today’s script, but it’s a way to get
Scott away from the bar action. Mike turns to Alana.
MIKE
Now why do you suppose he went and did that?
ALANA
Wagner, cut the act. (Laughs) How much did you pay him?
MIKE
Alana
Singleton, don’t you know bribing an officer of the law could get me
thrown in jail? Well, you must have gotten my note by now. When do I get
a drink thrown in my face?
ALANA
Wagner, I never said I'd throw the drink in your face. (Smiles) Now, maybe I’ll pour it over your head to cool you off...
MIKE
All I said in my note was asking you to meet me for a drink, nothing more.
ALANA
And I'm here, aren't I? (Smiles) You are a hard guy to understand. Did you think I was going to chew your head off?
MIKE
Well... (gulps) the thought did cross my mind.
ALANA
I
may have told you... and others... that I'm not ready for a
relationship with anyone, but it doesn't mean I can't have a good time.
MIKE
(Looks relieved)
I'll take your word on that.
Joanne
smiles and winks at Mike as if to say “go for it” while Alana can’t see
Joanne behind her egging Mike on. Bar music plays as we transition
scenes.
DISSOLVE TO -- J. Sullivan’s
Nick
has finished dinner and is looking at the final innings of the
ballgame, all the while scouring the staircase for the mystery woman to
come down.
NICK
I wonder if she was pulling my leg about coming down here?
BARTENDER
Naaa, I don’t think so. I've got a good view of that staircase and I haven't seen her come down.
NICK
The game's almost over, I guess that's why I was wondering.
BARTENDER
I’m sure she’ll… wait, I see her now.
As Nick turns, he sees the young woman on mid-staircase, draped around the arms of another guy.
NICK
Ah, I figured it was too good to be true.
Nick nurses his drink as the picture fades to black.
BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
SCENE FOUR
FADE IN -- J. Sullivan’s
The
scene is directly picked up from before the break, as Nick turns back
to his drink. What he doesn't see is the young woman hugging the guy,
and he walks out -- without the woman on his arm.
BARTENDER
Stand by, I think you’ve got company coming your way.
The woman bounds down the stairs and back into the bar area.
WOMAN
Hey stranger. Miss me?
Nick is a bit surprised to see her. She is wearing an orchid on her wrist, a corsage that someone got her from upstairs.
NICK
Hey there! I thought you’d left the bar.
WOMAN
What,
with that guy? (Laughs) Oh heck no, I was just saying goodbye to him.
He’s got a wife and two kids in Bethesda. Bartender, another vodka
tonic.
BARTENDER
Are you both sober enough? Just gotta check.
NICK
I’m fine, thanks. Dinner helped.
WOMAN
There was plenty of food upstairs. It'll wreck my diet, but...
At that Nick turns and looks the woman up and down.
WOMAN
Hey there, sexy. You wouldn’t be checking me out, would you?
NICK
With that figure? What do you think? Wreck your diet. Now I’ve heard everything.
The woman looks a little incredulous, but in a good way.
WOMAN
What are you implying, hot stuff? That I have a killer body?
NICK
I never said any such thing. (Smiles) Now the red hair, that's another story.
WOMAN
You
keep it up with those comments and I just might have to believe it.
(Drinks her vodka tonic) I just wanted to come down and have another
drink before I took off.
NICK
So soon? And what’s with the flower?
WOMAN
Yeah,
the party’s finally breaking up upstairs. (Looks down) My favorite
flowers are orchids. (Looks up) How are the Marlins doing?
NICK
Still trailing, 4-3.
WOMAN
Damn. That'll teach me to follow a team like Florida. I should give you something…
As
the woman is in her purse, there is a commotion behind them. A whole
bunch of people are coming down the stairs, about 30 in all.
NICK
What’s going on?
WOMAN
(Turning to see the group)
Now?
NICK
Do you have to go?
WOMAN
I’m afraid so. (Leans in and whispers in Nick’s ear) I had a really good time. It was great talking to you.
Nick gets a whiff of the perfume the woman is wearing.
NICK
Well, you smell great, that’s for sure.
WOMAN
Enchantress. I’m sure you’ll always remember it. (She runs her fingernails down Nick's right arm)
NICK
Wait...
Nick locks his hand with the woman's right hand. The camera gets a close shot of the two hands locked close, holding on tightly.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN
Come on, the party's just starting.
UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN
You coming or not?
The woman breaks the grip and blows a kiss to Nick as she backs up.
WOMAN
Go Marlins.
Nick realizes the grand opportunity is slipping away.
NICK
Go Gators.
The
woman joins her friends as they rush out of the bar, older and younger
crowd alike. As the crowd goes down the street, she looks inside through
the glass.
Nick, nursing his drink, realizes what just happened
and he curses himself. He opens his fist, on the same hand he had held
the woman’s hand with, and -- nothing.
NICK
Damn. No phone number. No business card. No name. Strike three, you’re out.
The bartender comes over and pats Nick on the hand.
BARTENDER
Oh man, that’s tough. That’s the saddest ending I’ve seen since Love Story. Need a refill?
NICK
No. (Motions to the seltzer trigger) Hit me.
BARTENDER
Lean in. I don’t want to get the bar dirty.
As
Nick leans in, the bartender sprays Nick in the face with water.
Disappointing music plays over the final part of the scene as the
picture fades to black.

EPISODE 10 -- DATE WITH A STRANGER
SOMERSET EPISODE 10
Written by: Steve Ungrey
Airdate: July 25, 2008
SCENE ONE
FADE IN -- Martin Enterprises
We see the camera pan up in the sky towards the top floors of Martin Enterprises, as the episode opens by picking up where Thursday’s left off. In the last minutes of Thursday’s program, Susannah asked Jack point-blank if her father put pressure on Jack to hire her aboard Martin Enterprises.
SUSANNAH
Jack, you can be honest with me. Did Dad do this or not?
Jack appears a bit puzzled.
JACK
You act as if you’re upset.
SUSANNAH
(Vigorously shakes her head)
No, Jack, I’m not upset. I just want to do all this on my own, that’s all. No help from Dad. The name Sam Lucas carries a lot of weight in Oklahoma City these days.
JACK
I don’t get it, Susannah. You seemed so gung-ho about the job when we talked over dinner and NOW you have questions?
Jack takes a seat at his desk as Susannah sits down.
SUSANNAH
I don't mean to come across as harsh, Jack. I've told Dad I have to make it on my own, like I did as a corporate lawyer, and I don't want him calling in any favors.
JACK
I’ve seen what you’ve done over the years. The law firm you worked at when you were living away from Oklahoma City is quite a reputable place.
SUSANNAH
Well, I’m going to be 40 in a few years. I have to start fighting my own battles. Don’t you think?
JACK
You’re talking to someone who’s waaaaay past 40, Susannah. (Chuckles) Come on, Susannah. We all know 40 is the new 30. Think young.
SUSANNAH
Ha ha. If only it were that easy.
The door opens and Joanne comes in with two cups of coffee.
JOANNE
Here you go, Susannah. (Hands off a cup) Jack, as you like it. (Another cup gets passed)
SUSANNAH
Thanks, Joanne.
She sips from the cup and her eyes widen.
SUSANNAH
Hmm, strong coffee. That’s a plus about working here.
Jack grabs a notepad and pretends to jot notes down on the paper.
JACK
Likes strong coffee… is a bit bullheaded…
SUSANNAH
Oh, so I’m bullheaded, huh?
Joanne rolls her eyes and laughs.
JOANNE
I’m going to get out of here before I get rolled up in what’s going on.
JACK
(Checking wall clock)
Actually, Joanne, it’s late enough that if you want to knock off for the day you can go right ahead.
JOANNE
Are you sure? You’re expecting no late faxes or anything?
JACK
As far as I know, no. In fact, we’re going to probably continue this conversation over dinner.
JOANNE
Well, depending on where you guys dine, I may see you there. I’ll finish up a file and then I plan on having a drink or two after work myself.
JACK
Good. Get out of here and go knock em dead.
Joanne exits the office as the light music begins playing in the background. Jack and Susannah sip from their coffee cups as the picture changes.
DISSOLVE TO -- Washington, D.C.
After the obligatory overhead shot of the city with the “Washington” title card over it, the action shifts inside.
DISSOLVE TO -- A restaurant and bar somewhere in Washington
We see a bartender, played in a guest appearance by Eddie Steeples from “My Name is Earl”, cleaning glasses and stacking them behind the bar.
Nick comes in and spots the open seats at the bar and heads on over.
BARTENDER
Hey there. Welcome to J. Sullivan’s.
NICK
Hey. Have the Nationals started yet?
BARTENDER
That’s what I was going to check. Let me look. They’re down in Florida tonight and I don’t think it’s raining.
NICK
Good to hear, I hope not. (Nick hears a lot of commotion coming from the upstairs area) Wow, it’s not even 8 and it’s already hopping up there.
BARTENDER
Get used to it. There’s some sort of going-away party for someone going on upstairs. I got a feeling you’re safe down here. The drinks will be flowing. What’ll you have?
NICK
Manhattan, please. And a menu.
BARTENDER
Coming right up.
The bartender takes a glass and begins fixing up the Manhattan as music plays out of the scene. The picture fades to black.
The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.
BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.
This portion brought to you today by dark, sparkling Folger’s coffee. Folger’s. The coffee that tastes as rich as it looks.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Giovanni’s
Susannah and Jack have taken their conversation to the restaurant, where the two have ordered a bottle of wine and are celebrating her new job.
JACK
To my newest employee, may you like working for Martin Enterprises and may I be a boss that doesn’t run you into the ground.
Susannah lifts her wine glass.
SUSANNAH
Hear hear. I’ll drink to that.
The two clink wine glasses and Susannah enjoys a sip of wine.
SUSANNAH
Mmm. The taste of zinfandel is so good right about now. (Pauses) Was it true when you said I was bullheaded in the office?
JACK
Just like your mother used to be. I remember Lahoma and Sam at times having a field day over you and also Lahoma having trouble with Sam’s long hours at the plant.
SUSANNAH
I don’t recall much about that. I was in a crib a lot of the time.
JACK
She could be a handful, but Lahoma always loved Sam in the end until that time when the two of you split Somerset and then Sam left shortly after. I felt a bit adrift without him, but he’d mentored me so well that I was ready to grab the reins and go on.
SUSANNAH
Sounds like you had a good education, then.
JACK
It was good. (Sips from his wine glass) All kidding aside, Susannah, Sam did wonder how my staffing levels were, but I told him I was asking you to come work for me anyway.
SUSANNAH
So Dad tried to throw around his weight and make sure I’d have a job to support the house payments with on a regular basis. I saved a lot of my money when I was in Oklahoma City.
JACK
Well, his words fell on deaf ears with me because I told him I was already going to use your services.
SUSANNAH
So you had plans to hire me. I’m not surprised now that I hear that.
JACK
Susannah, I need a lot of legal help with Martin Enterprises. I'm marshaling my forces to combat a possible fight with the Cleybank Corporation over the future of this city.
SUSANNAH
Involving George. Oh boy, he’ll looooooove dealing with me. Is the future of the city that bad?
JACK
Oh, the city will survive. Don’t get me wrong. It survived me almost killing it with my boneheaded move of selling Delaney Brands to NutraSource. It was a very dark day when the cannery plant came down.
SUSANNAH
Let me guess. That’s what got George riled up at you.
JACK
I admit I really messed up. Robert said to me don’t worry, you were damned if you do or don’t with that transaction, but I wish I had done things differently. I think that’s why I stepped in several years later, bought the land -- when all those homes sprouted up and Grant's Preserve was born, I kind of felt vindicated.
SUSANNAH
Well, I’m glad to have a home there. So is Giovanni, I hear.
JACK
Yes. And there’s more where that came from, I’m sure.
SUSANNAH
And I've got the skills you need?
JACK
I can put you on retainer and have you do legal work for me when you're not out getting clients. What do you say?
SUSANNAH
Well... if Dad had nothing to do directly with setting this up... (smiles and outstretches her hand) You've got yourself a new lawyer.
JACK
That's the spirit! Welcome to Martin Enterprises.
Jack shakes Susannah’s hand and the two smile, as the picture fades to black.
BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
(We see “The Guiding Light” title card)
Now is the time to come in from the dark. Quick! Turn on the light! The Guiding Light, the way you imagine it could be. Part of the Daytime Royalty lineup. Weekdays.

BILL WOLFF
And now, following station identification, we’ll return with the second half of Somerset.
The second half of Somerset is brought to you today by Butter Flavor Crisco, for foods that have rich butter flavor without all the cholesterol.

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Giovanni’s
At the restaurant, Mike is at the bar nursing a cold brew when Joanne happens to walk in.
MIKE
Well, evening to you, Joanne! I was beginning to think you sat behind a computer screen all the time.
JOANNE
I figured I’d go back to my place, stretch out a bit, get a workout in and then have a couple drinks at Giovanni’s. Is your favorite nurse here?
MIKE
Not too loud, okay? I don’t want word to spread.
Mike sees Scott Garfield walk in and motions him over.
MIKE
You don’t mind a little company, do you?
JOANNE
Not at all. (Stands from her seat) Lt. Garfield, good evening.
SCOTT
Joanne, you look lovely as always.
JOANNE
Why, thank you. Sit with us. We were just talking about a few things.
MIKE
Well, if crime is so low in Somerset, I guess a police chief isn’t needed. Right, Scott?
SCOTT
Watch it. See if I let you have exclusives ever again.
MIKE
Relax, I’ll behave.
Mike laughs and drinks from his beer glass.
MIKE
Hey, by the way. We had a call come into our office about some activity down by the riverfront. What do you know about that?
SCOTT
It’s true, unfortunately.
JOANNE
What happened?
SCOTT
We've had trouble keeping people away from the dilapidated buildings. Old Somerset has had some casualties in terms of office and retail space. There’s all that explosive development behind the waterfront area but no one’s thought about the river.
JOANNE
Well… (smiles as she orders a whiskey sour) Someone has.
SCOTT
And I know who that someone is.
MIKE
Well, this is what I don’t understand. If there's such a problem down by the riverfront, has there been any thought given to urban renewal? Tearing down and starting over?
SCOTT
Careful. (Motions toward Jack) You don't want Jack to hear you saying that.
MIKE
Are you saying... his Project X or whatever the hell you call it involves restoration?
SCOTT
Well, he’s very private about his plans. You know that. He's trying to marshal together enough forces to push the renovation plans through. He wants -- hell, we all want -- all of downtown to be as vital as possible.
JOANNE
And Lord knows I’ve heard him talk about it enough. (Waves at Jack) I don’t mind it, though. I like seeing someone so passionate about saving the city. It’s either his way or The Cleybank Corporation takes over.
MIKE
Ugh. We don’t want that.
The back doors open and Giovanni comes out with a bowl of fettucine alfredo for Mike.
GIOVANNI
Mangia, Mike. Eat up. Menus for the both of you? Joanne, good to see you by the way.
JOANNE
You too, Giovanni. I ate dinner at home, no thanks.
GIOVANNI
(Feigns being offended)
I guess my cooking is not good enough for you. (Smiles) OK, maybe next time. By the way, Scott, guess who we heard from today.
Scott’s face brightens immediately.
SCOTT
Let me guess. I'm going to say it's Somerset's favorite model?
GIOVANNI
You bet. Rose got a lengthy e-mail from Annabella... she's likely coming home for a little while before she goes back to Italy for some more work.
SCOTT
Well, good for you! Now if you could only get your three children under one roof at one time you‘d be all set.
MIKE
Say, Giovanni, that’s good news. I always thought Annabella was drop-dead…
Giovanni turns to give the Petterino evil eye.
MIKE
Uhhh… (downs a shot of bourbon) Smart?
GIOVANNI
That’s better.
Giovanni laughs, along with Joanne and Scott.
CUT TO -- Jack’s table
Susannah is sipping from her wine while Jack is salting his dinner.
JACK
Thank you, by the way, for letting me take my newest employee out to dinner for a celebration. Have you given any thought about when you'd like to start?
SUSANNAH
Well, I was hoping to get a few things squared away at home first before I introduced work into my life here, but I can start whenever you'd like me.
JACK
How about the middle of next week? Your official title would be acquisitions manager. You'd be overseeing some of my properties and acting as a liaison between me and what I own. If you need more time...
Jack’s cell phone rings and he sees it’s Nick on the other end.
JACK
Hold that thought. (Presses button) Hello, Nicholas!
CUT TO -- J. Sullivan’s
Nick is drinking a Manhattan and watching the Marlins game.
NICK
And a good evening to you too. You actually were right, Jack. There were some interesting things to learn at this convention. I've got some stuff to bring back to Somerset.
JACK
See, I told you… I've been to those seminars and conventions in Washington.
NICK
Well, actually, I'm at this bar now and I'm just going to unwind for a bit and have a couple beers or Manhattans with dinner. There's a big party going on in an upstairs room here and the more I avoid the crowds the better off I'll be.
JACK
Good to hear. Have a good night, my friend.
NICK
Hopefully I will.
As Nick says his last words to Jack, the bartender is cleaning some glasses when his attention is diverted to the staircase. He can’t see a face, but the camera focuses in on a woman from the waist down, slender in figure with shapely legs and wearing what appears to be a short black dress, descending the stairs.
Mysterious music plays behind the bar soundtrack as the picture fades to black.
BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.
SCENE FOUR
FADE IN -- Giovanni’s
Jack has a glass of champagne for the end of the meal, and he is toasting Susannah.
JACK
To the newest employee of Martin Enterprises. May you have a long and prosperous career with my company.
He clinks Susannah's glass.
SUSANNAH
Hear hear. (Sips champagne) Mmm. The good stuff.
JACK
Actually it’s Giovanni’s good stuff. I'm not quite a Cristal man... nor am I Dom Perignon. I built my fortune by being a bit more frugal.
SUSANNAH
This works. I better quit before I have a repeat of what happened at dinner before.
JACK
This time… (he laughs) we’ll make sure you get home in one piece.
Susannah laughs as we quickly change scenes without music accompaniment.
CUT TO -- J. Sullivan’s
At the bar in Washington, Nick is watching TV as the Nationals are playing baseball.
NICK
Another Manhattan, bartender.
BARTENDER
Hey, coming right up.
We see the young woman has come off the staircase and she sees the TV on the ballgame. She quickly runs over and grabs the seat next to Nick.
For the first time, we see the woman in full view, with long, flaming ruby red hair, and she smiles as she turns and talks to Nick.
WOMAN
So who’s winning… Nats or Marlins?
Nick turns and smiles, suitably impressed.
NICK
I’m impressed. A woman who knows her baseball.
The woman looks down at what Nick is drinking and licks her lips.
WOMAN
And I’m impressed. A man who’s not afraid to drink the hard stuff. You up for a little company, handsome?
The woman smiles, full red lips and all, and Nick is a goner.
NICK
There is no way in hell I can turn down a smile like that.
BARTENDER
Miss, what are you drinking?
WOMAN
Vodka tonic, please.
The woman reaches for her purse. Nick thinks she’s going to grab money, so he signals the bartender and points at his napkin to say “on me”. He’s intent on buying her at least one drink.
Instead of money, the woman pulls out lip gloss and dabs her lips with it.
Nick looks a little transfixed as the music builds. The picture instantly cuts to black.
The Somerset credits roll.

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Giovanni’s

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Giovanni’s

EPISODE 9 -- A LION PROTECTS HIS CUB
SOMERSET EPISODE 9
Written by Steve Ungrey
Original Airdate Thursday July 24, 2008
SCENE ONE
FADE IN -- Washington, D.C.
We see stock footage of the Washington D.C. area, with the accompanying title below that says the city’s name, as the Capitol can be seen in the background and Pennsylvania Avenue in the foreground.
DISSOLVE TO -- A Washington hotel room
Nick is just checking in with people back in Somerset. He flew over early in the morning to check into his hotel and start interacting with people, and he is already finding some possible connections. Still, he can’t shake the fact he finds conventions boring.
After checking his messages at City Hall, Nick dials Jack at Martin Enterprises. Joanne answers on the other end.
JOANNE
Martin Enterprises, this is Joanne?
NICK
Hey Jo, Nick Barclay here.
JOANNE
(Smiles as she turns toward her computer screen)
Well, good afternoon, Mr. Barclay. How’s the capital treating you?
NICK
Don’t ask. It’s just like I thought it might be. Do you ever get tired of saying Martin Enterprises in your sleep?
JOANNE
It’s just like Pam on The Office. You get used to it.
NICK
I bet. Is Jack around?
JOANNE
You’re lucky. He’s been in Johnson City all morning and he just got back an hour or so ago.
NICK
Good deal.
JOANNE
I’ll put you through. Hold on a second.
CUT TO -- Jack’s office
We see Jack studying some folders when the phone rings. Picking it up, Jack springs into action.
JACK
Yes, Joanne? (Pauses) Ah, the prodigal city manager reports. Put him through.
The line clicks twice before Nick says hello.
JACK
And how are you? How’s the Rensslaer Hotel’s accommodations? I trust your suite is pretty good?
NICK
Well, you didn’t pay for it. This is strictly out of the City Hall account. I’m allotted an amount of money for seminars and training.
JACK
And I can’t add anything to it, I know. I know. How are things?
NICK
Well, I just wanted to let you know I'm among the living down here... if the seminars aren't putting me to sleep, that is.
JACK
Oh come on. You haven’t been to too many of them, have you?
NICK
A couple this afternoon, one in the early evening, and then a few more tomorrow. In the meantime, I’m going to go enjoy myself thoroughly in the interim.
JACK
(Sits at his desk with coffee, scanning some sheets)
Well, you left so early today to get down there and I didn't have a chance to say goodbye before you did.
NICK
I had to get out of here quickly, so I called a couple chits in with a friend at the airport and he got me a seat on this morning’s puddle jumper to Chicago. I flew to Washington from there.
JACK
And got in just in time, I take it?
NICK
Yes. And don’t worry about not getting to say goodbye. You’ve had your hands full with your dinner guests and then the stuff in Johnson City this morning. Is everything OK there?
JACK
Oh yes, everything is just fine. Sam and Lahoma left earlier today and I still haven't heard if anything went wrong. I did hear Zachary Cleypool is in the hospital, though.
NICK
Dear Lord, as a result of the car accident no doubt. George isn’t going to let Susannah and the Lucases forget that.
JACK
Well, don’t worry about that. You leave Susannah and George and company to me.
Jack smiles as a little fun, sinister music plays to take us into the opening credits.
The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.
BILL WOLFF

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Jack’s office
We continue the conversation between Jack and Nick about the convention.
JACK
You just bring back some knowledge on how to further your political career and we‘ll get along just fine.
NICK
Jack, that’s what I don’t understand. We don’t have a mayor here in Somerset. I’m essentially the head honcho. How can the youngest city manager ever in Somerset go even further? It would involve leaving the area.
JACK
Nicholas, you could run for anything! Mayor, yes, if they'd decide to create a mayor's position. You could run for state office. You could be a United States Senator.
NICK
I can dream about the latter, right?
JACK
Illinois has to turn red someday, doesn't it? (Pauses) Now how long do the seminars go today and tomorrow?
NICK
There's some stuff tonight and tomorrow. In all seriousness, it's all right, if you call seminars for city managers your cup of tea.
JACK
Well, by all means, have fun in Washington and make sure you sample some of the nightlife tonight.
NICK
I may sneak out to a bar and grab a drink or dinner. The Nationals are playing Florida tonight, so I might head out and watch the game.
JACK
That’s the spirit, my boy. Let me know how things go, OK?
NICK
You bet. Take care.
Nick puts down the phone on his end and then rests his head on his hands.
NICK
If I don’t die of boredom first.
Light music plays as Nick laughs to himself as he sips coffee.
DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital
The outside of Somerset Hospital appears, as we fade in on Zachary's room. Patrick, who just got to the hospital to make patient rounds, is examining Zachary's ankle.
PATRICK
Zachary, I didn’t know you wanted to stay here so much. Here you were all set to leave our care, and...
ZACHARY
And like an idiot, I stumbled. I think I may have twisted my ankle in the accident…
PATRICK
The tests we ran last night indicated no problems with your ankle. Did you have any other injuries in the last year?
Zachary thinks about it and then it dawns on him.
ZACHARY
Dammit… I suffered a foot injury last year when I was playing a pickup game of basketball with some friends and my doctor at the time told me that if I didn’t take it easy with the foot then something could happen.
PATRICK
Well, in your defense, I think you banged your foot against the bed at just the right point. Something inside shattered and now we have to find out just what happened.
Off-camera, a voice can be heard yelling “Where is my son?”
ZACHARY
Oh God, the cavalry’s here. Get ready.
Zachary covers his face with his hands, shakes his head and waits as George bursts into Zachary’s room.
GEORGE
What the hell did you do to my son? (He yells at Patrick) You call yourself a DOCTOR?
PATRICK
Mr. Cleypool, need I remind you this is a hospital and there are patients trying to rest?
GEORGE
This is a HOSPITAL? I thought it was the Somerset Country Club, tee time was at 9 and roast quail was being served for dinner. (Sheds the sarcasm) Of course I know this is a hospital, you insufferable…
PATRICK
Do you care to know how your son is or are you more interested in talking about the finer points of how we don’t treat patients well here?
George looks at Zachary’s new injury and back at Patrick, wondering how they could have let this happen.
GEORGE
Well, the last I knew he was supposed to be discharged this morning following the accident.
ZACHARY
And I still will be, Dad. Just a bit later on today. They're running a few tests.
Victoria has her nurses’ clipboard as she comes in the room, but she goes to a corner for a second while the drama plays out by Zachary’s bedside. Light music plays as Victoria looks at Zachary and George going at it.
BILL WOLFF
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
The dramatic conversation continues between Zachary and George
GEORGE
(Looking at Patrick and Victoria)
And then he can go, right? Away from any further poking and prodding...
ZACHARY
Dad. I did this on my own. Remember last year when I busted up my foot playing basketball? Remember the doctor said it didn’t quite heal properly? Well, I banged my foot against the bed and it caused the injury to recur.
GEORGE
I should take that motorcycle away from you…
That last line gets Zachary, who has finally had enough.
ZACHARY
And what, Dad? Give me back my tricycle? My building blocks? Put me back in kindergarten?? Dad, I’m not two years old again. I’m over 21.
GEORGE
You think I don’t know that? I can't do anything because you're free and over 21 years old.
ZACHARY
You keep thinking I'm a child, in other words.
George sees he’s going to get nowhere arguing, so he gives up the ghost.
GEORGE
Well, get the hell out of that bed as soon as you can. I'm just headed upstairs for a board meeting. I’ll be upstairs for a few hours.
PATRICK
Mr. Cleypool, by the time your meeting is over, your son should be ready to go.
GEORGE
Good.
George turns and walks out of the room, and Victoria takes a couple steps forward. She’s gulping and swallowing a bit after seeing George in action.
VICTORIA
Is your dad always like that?
ZACHARY
I'm sorry you had to see that. You actually helped me out this morning when I fell. When you came back in you were actually pretty gentle in getting me back up on my feet.
VICTORIA
Hey, it’s all in a day's work. I'll be back in shortly.
Victoria leaves Zachary’s room and heads out to the nurses station. The phone rings just as Victoria reaches the counter.
VICTORIA
Timed just perfectly, whoever you are. (Picks up phone) Fourth floor, Nurse Petterino?
As Victoria is on the phone with a caller and writing something down on paper, Alana enters the station and checks her cubicle for messages. Alana sees Mike’s note when she opens it up and laughs to herself.
Victoria finishes up the call.
VICTORIA
OK, I'll make sure Dr. Kettering gets this note immediately. Thank you.
Victoria puts down the phone, looks up and smiles as she puts the paper in Dr. Kettering’s cubicle.
VICTORIA
Reading your latest love note?
ALANA
(Shakes her head)
Don't tell me you read this. If you did...
VICTORIA
I most certainly did not. If he’s he's whispering sweet nothings to you... (giggles)
Alana whacks Victoria over the head with her cardboard folder.
ALANA
See if I ever invite you over for mint chocolate chip ice cream again! For your information, Tori, he just wondered if I'd be free for coffee some night this week. And if not, he'd be happy to come to the hospital for coffee in the cafeteria.
VICTORIA
Well, isn’t that nice. Sounds like all he wants is to have a little coffee with his favorite nurse.
ALANA
Personally, if you ask me, I think the man is lovesick.
VICTORIA
Well, after some of what you told me last night… I think you might be too.
A bit of surprise music plays as Alana gets an incredulous look on her face. The picture fades to black.
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE FOUR
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
The conversation between Victoria and Alana continues.
VICTORIA
Alana, did I strike a nerve?
Alana quickly regains her senses and shakes her head.
ALANA
No, no, you didn't. Is it that obvious? Tori, I can get along just fine without someone in my life. You're doing just fine without one.
VICTORIA
Career comes first for me, for now at least. And besides, I didn’t say you had to marry the guy now, did I?
ALANA
No, you didn't. It just seems like ever since Mike got roughed up a bit when there was that protest demonstration downtown and I checked him out, he's been smitten.
VICTORIA
I don’t think he’s smitten, Alana. He just wants to share a cup of joe with his favorite nurse.
ALANA
I should see if Taylor’s looking for a date. Might you be even interested? (Laughs)
VICTORIA
The last I knew, Taylor was working through some stuff… and me, I’m content pouring through books to study. My exam’s coming up in another several weeks, after all.
ALANA
That it is. All right, I’ll be down the hall checking on some patients.
As Alana takes her clipboards and disappears, Victoria shakes her head and laughs, thinking Alana is obviously missing out on something. Playful music is heard as the scene changes.
DISSOLVE TO -- Martin Enterprises
Joanne is at the desk sorting through some folders to give to Jack. As she stands up at her desk, ready to go inside, the elevator doors open and Susannah steps off.
JOANNE
Susannah! Good to see you again!
SUSANNAH
Good to see you too, Joanne. I might be seeing more of you if Jack and I have a good enough conversation.
Joanne’s face brightens.
JOANNE
Are you thinking of taking Jack up on his offer?
SUSANNAH
I just want to talk to him first. Is he available?
JOANNE
One second.
Joanne sits on the edge of the desk, picks up the phone and punches one button.
JOANNE
Jack, Susannah Lucas is here to see you. (Smiles) Thought so. OK.
She puts down the phone and motions with her hand.
JOANNE
Go right on in. He’s happy you’re here. Would you like anything before you settle in to talk to Jack?
SUSANNAH
Cup of coffee, maybe?
JOANNE
I was just about to get one myself, so I’ll bring two more with a tray.
SUSANNAH
Thanks. Wish me luck.
Susannah goes toward the door and opens it to find Jack at his desk, deep in paperwork.
JACK
Ah, Susannah! Thanks for rescuing me from this mountain of work. Did Lahoma and Sam get off safely this morning? I was over in Johnson City.
SUSANNAH
Safely off back to Oklahoma City. I got a text message from Dad an hour ago.
JACK
Adjusting fine already?
SUSANNAH
Well, I thought I’d begin my life as a single gal by coming over and safely asking you this one question.
JACK
Fire away.
SUSANNAH
Okay. (Pauses) Did Dad ask you to hire me?
The question catches Jack by surprise as the picture fades to black with accompanying closing music.

EPISODE 8 -- CUTTING THE TIES
SOMERSET EPISODE 8
Written by: Steve Ungrey
Original airdate Wednesday July 23, 2008
SCENE ONE
FADE IN -- Susannah’s house
We see a morning scene outside establishing that this is Grant’s Preserve before we fade inside to see Sam and Lahoma bringing a couple of suitcases to the doorway. They are on their way back to Oklahoma City.
Susannah knows this moment is coming, but she’s totally unprepared for it.
SUSANNAH
(Fighting back tears)
God, I’m going to miss you guys. Before we were always in the same city, even if we weren’t under one roof.
LAHOMA
Well…
Lahoma sniffles herself and laughs a bit as she hugs Susannah.
LAHOMA
You’re the one who decided she just had to go back to Somerset!
SUSANNAH
Mother, you’re not making it any easier on me.
SAM
Susie, you sure you’re going to be okay here? I mean, the trauma surrounding the accident last night and everything…
SUSANNAH
It wasn’t that bad. And I can handle George Cleypool and whatever he chooses to throw at me. (Laughs) Provided it isn’t anything bad.
LAHOMA
Well, you just call if you need an ear to bend, would you?
SAM
Or e-mail. Your mom forgets there are other much quicker ways to stay in touch.
LAHOMA
(Playfully teases Sam)
You do forget I’ve used computers before, dear. And Sam, if I didn’t know any better I'd swear you were trying to cut the cord.
SAM
No, dear. Just acknowledging the fact Susie’s more than ready to stand on her own two feet. She’s been ready. It’s just that…
SUSANNAH
Mom, Dad. I can take care of myself. And besides, Jack's pledged to keep an eye on me. He’s going to let you guys know if anything major happens.
SAM
Speaking of which, have you decided on Jack's job offer?
Susannah shakes her head, but she’s a bit confused at the same time.
SUSANNAH
I haven't decided completely, but I'm leaning toward saying yes.
She checks her watch.
SUSANNAH
You guys better get going if you want to get back to Oklahoma City. Your flight's in how many hours?
LAHOMA
Later this afternoon out of Chicago. Sam will be back in court tomorrow.
SAM
Lahoma dear, they can even start that case without me. I've got good associate help.
SUSANNAH
All right. If you need some advice, Dad, you know where to turn.
She gets a bit misty-eyed again.
SUSANNAH
You guys...
Susannah hugs both of her parents.
SUSANNAH
I'm going to miss having you here.
LAHOMA
We're a phone call away.
SAM
(Winks as he picks up the suitcases)
Or an IM.
Sam disappears out the door.
LAHOMA
You and your technology.
We see an outside shot of Sam and Lahoma at the car, waving goodbye to Susannah. She waves goodbye back as the car pulls down the street.
Susannah puts a hand to her mouth and then to her eyes, wiping the tears away. Susannah shuts the door.
SUSANNAH
(Looking around)
Hello, life as a single gal.
She goes toward the phone to dial Martin Enterprises, but before she can pick up the phone there is a knock at the door.
SUSANNAH
(Runs back to door and opens it)
Did you guys forget something?
Patrick peeks out from behind the flowers.
PATRICK
No, but it looks like my housewarming gift is only going to be seen by one person instead of three.
Susannah smiles as the sees the flowers, with accompanying light music taking us to the break. The picture fades to black.
The theme begins as we see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen.

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
At Somerset Hospital, we see Victoria starting her shift for the day and she is at the front desk checking charts. She's speaking with another nurse, Taylor Kendrick, about her ice cream social with Alana the night before.
VICTORIA
It was the least I could do.
TAYLOR
Hey, you've got the right idea. If you can't get ahead in your job then (laughing) bribe the head nurse.
VICTORIA
It wasn't a bribe, honest! Alana's like family to the Petterinos and she's always said she's a bit lonely when she goes home at night.
TAYLOR
I know, I know. We've taken turns inviting Alana places. Men have bought her drinks. She appreciates the attention but I don't know if she's ready to move on yet.
VICTORIA
Well, I know one guy who would like to take her mind off of work. (Smiles) What's going on so far? Is it going to be a rough day at the Skeleton Hotel, as Patrick calls it?
TAYLOR
Well, that room over there…
Taylor points toward the corner.
TAYLOR
The patient in there is being discharged today if everything works out. Might want to give him a once-over.
VICTORIA
On my way.
Music plays as Victoria takes her equipment and a clipboard and heads toward the door. The scene changes.
DISSOLVE TO -- Martin Enterprises
Joanne, Jack's assistant, is sitting at her large front desk when the phone rings, jarring her from her work on the computer keyboard. She grabs her headphones and punches the front button.
JOANNE
Martin Enterprises, Joanne speaking?
CUT TO -- Sam’s car
SAM
Morning, Joanne. Sam Lucas. Is Jack around?
JOANNE
I wish I could say yes, but he had to go over to Johnson City this morning for a meeting on some property he owns. He’ll be back later today.
SAM
Oh, shoot. He told us his schedule can get a little crazy.
JOANNE
And I’m the one that’s here to clean it up a lot of times.
SAM
Tell ya what… do you have Jack’s cell phone?
JOANNE
He probably won’t answer it until his meeting is done, but I can give it to you.
SAM
(Memorizes number) OK, Joanne. Thanks, and tell Jack hello. Tell him not to work you too hard, either.
JOANNE
From your mouth to his ear. Have a good day.
SAM
You too, thanks.
Lahoma comes back to the car with two cups of coffee as Sam writes down Jack’s number. Sam starts the car and the two take off again.
LAHOMA
Did you get a hold of Jack yet?
SAM
No, Joanne said he was over in Johnson City. That man has come a long way from the junior executive I knew.
LAHOMA
You look so proud.
SAM
Well, I DID mentor him. It was one of the few things I did right when I was with Delaney Brands.
LAHOMA
Are you amazed at how far he’s gone?
SAM
And how far he has to go. I told Susie to keep me in touch about this mysterious project of his. I think it sounds very intriguing.
Sam notices Lahoma is still a bit misty-eyed in the other car seat.
SAM
Aw for pete’s sake… Lahoma, do you think we should move back to Somerset?
LAHOMA
No no, honey. I’m just used to having Susie be in the same city as we are.
SAM
You forget, for a few years she lived away from Oklahoma City.
LAHOMA
No, I didn’t forget. I just didn’t think it would turn out like it did.
SAM
Well, she came back to Oklahoma City for several years and now she’s expressed a desire to go back out on her own. I can’t blame her for that.
LAHOMA
Well… I guess we’ll have to let her go and watch her spread her wings, then.
SAM
We shall. Now let’s drink our coffee and rev our engines up to get back to Oklahoma. The busier we stay…
LAHOMA
The more we can let Susannah get off to her fresh start.
Sam and Lahoma smile as they drive along, with light music guiding us into the fade out. The picture fades to black.
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
The action is a direct pickup from Scene 1, as Victoria opens the door and sees a patient sleeping. The patient is Zachary Cleypool, and he awakens upon seeing a nurse come into the room.
ZACHARY
Thank God, does this mean I'm getting out of here?
Victoria hooks up Zachary to a blood pressure cuff.
VICTORIA
One second and I’ll find out.
ZACHARY
Wait, wait. Why are you checking me out there? I feel fine.
VICTORIA
Standard operating procedure… (scans chart) Mr. Cleypool. You may feel fine, but I'm the authority where that's concerned.
ZACHARY
Since when? (Catches what he said) Never mind. I trust you. Fire away.
VICTORIA
Now just be still. (Takes off the cuff) Normal there, that’s good. Have you had any discomfort or pain since the accident last night? What happened anyway?
ZACHARY
Oh, it was nothing. I was riding my motorcycle into Somerset to meet some friends and I had to swerve because I was in the way of a car.
VICTORIA
No pain in your extremities?
ZACHARY
Just a couple bumps and scrapes. Wanna check those out?
VICTORIA
Love to, but that’s not my job. I have to have an attending do that. Let me hand off this chart to the attending and you'll probably get sprung here in the next hour.
ZACHARY
Good. No offense, but I'll take my home over Somerset Hospital any day now.
VICTORIA
I understand completely. Think of how I feel having to be here every day...
ZACHARY
Yes. But you're getting paid for it.
Victoria smiles as she grabs the clipboard.
VICTORIA
So true. So true…
Zachary is sitting up in bed and looking a little impatient about when he wants to leave as the scene changes with accompanying music.
DISSOLVE TO -- Susannah’s home
Susannah is setting the flowers Patrick brought on the dining room table, making the perfect centerpiece for whenever she decides to have her first meal at home.
SUSANNAH
I'll have to tell Mom and Dad you stopped by. You just missed them.
Susannah looks up, smiles to herself and then turns to look at Patrick.
SUSANNAH
Or did you plan it that way?
PATRICK
Hey now, Susie. No ideas there. I intended to come over to bid your parents farewell and wish them a good trip back to Oklahoma, but I must have been a bit late.
SUSANNAH
No problem. (Goes toward the refrigerator) Want something to drink?
PATRICK
Got any cold pop?
SUSANNAH
I think so. I did some shopping for the basics yesterday before we met Jack for dinner.
Susannah checks the refrigerator.
SUSANNAH
And pop was one of them. Catch.
Susannah fires a can over in Patrick’s direction, surprising him. He drops the can because he wasn’t expecting it this quickly.
PATRICK
I guess I'll have to wait until the fizz disappears inside. I didn't know you had a rocket arm like that.
SUSANNAH
I wasn't all books and nerdy-looking sunglasses in school. Which you wouldn't have known because you went to school in Arizona.
PATRICK
Now what does that have to do with your law career? You forget I saw you when you were a teenager...
SUSANNAH
Ace pitcher, Bailey Grove High School Red Devils of Oklahoma City. We won the state title in my junior year, remember?
PATRICK
Ah, yes. You talked about playing softball the few times we got together as families.
SUSANNAH
And the couple times we went out by ourselves, I might add.
PATRICK
I might have to recruit you for the hospital's ball team.
SUSANNAH
And what makes you think I'd play?
PATRICK
It’s called networking. I’m sure you’ve heard of it.
SUSANNAH
You sound like Jack Martin. He uses that word a lot.
PATRICK
Yes. Now that you’ve met the great, the powerful, Wizard of Somerset, you’ll be speaking all that is good and grand about Jack Martin.
SUSANNAH
Not only met him, he offered me a job at Martin Enterprises in legal. He knew my corporate law background. Come to think of it, I don't know what the job will entail...
PATRICK
Well darn it. The hospital could have used an attorney like you.
SUSANNAH
Well, we'll be traveling in the same circles now, won't we?
PATRICK
I guess. Wait until I tell Mom and Dad who returned to Somerset.
SUSANNAH
You might be too late. Stanley was going to get in touch with Sam on a personal call and I'm sure that will be the first words out of Sam's mouth.
PATRICK
Well, then look out, Somerset. Susannah Lucas is here!
Susannah laughs as she takes a drink of pop and the picture fades to black over light music.

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
At Somerset Hospital, Mike has stopped by to check in on Zachary's condition for a small story in the paper. He is at the desk talking to Victoria.
MIKE
(Writing on notepad)
So there are no complications?
VICTORIA
Well, I really can’t say anything specific like that due to privacy issues, but you didn't hear from me that he's doing okay. He'll be leaving later this morning.
MIKE
Good. Another crisis averted for the Cleybank Corporation.
VICTORIA
You'll have this in tomorrow, Mike?
MIKE
Yes. Now obviously, if something changes, I'll check in with the hospital.
Mike digs in his pocket after he shuts off his recorder.
MIKE
While I'm at it, though, I might as well combine business with personal. (Produces note) Can you give this to a certain female?
VICTORIA
(Holds note to body)
Ooooo, I feel like I'm back in junior high school passing notes around the class. I'll make sure she gets this in her cubicle.
MIKE
Thank you, my dear. I'll be at the office and I might check in later in the day.
Victoria smiles as she turns to the cubicles.
VICTORIA
Okay, Mike. Have a good day.
MIKE
You too.
Mike hops on the elevator as the doors close.
VICTORIA
(Looks at note)
You don't know how lucky you are.
She puts the note in a cubicle. As she removes her hand, the camera catches the mailbox area and we see the note is meant for Alana. Soft, somewhat romantic music plays as we dissolve scenes.
DISSOLVE TO -- Zachary’s room
Zachary has gotten up and used the bathroom without any problem, but on the way back he bangs his left foot and ankle on the bedside.
Zachary grimaces at first, having banged himself pretty hard. He goes back toward the bed but we see his face contort in pain. He stumbles, falling down by the bed.
Zachary tries to get up, but he feels like a hot poker is pressing against his left foot and ankle. He notices it swelling.
ZACHARY
God... (Grimaces) Now you've done it, Zachary Cleypool.
It is obvious Zachary has broken something or at the very least suffered a bigger injury than he already had. A dramatic piano background accompanies Zachary as he tries to stand and fails. The picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital

EPISODE 7 -- CONFRONTATION
SOMERSET EPISODE 7
Original Airdate: Tuesday July 22, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey
SCENE ONE
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
A dramatic piano background shows off the tension in the highly charged first scene, which is a direct pickup from Monday’s broadcast. In the last scene Monday, George Cleypool had been talking with Sam and Lahoma before Susannah came out.
When George sees Susannah, he immediately comes over and goes one on one.
GEORGE
(Yelling)
Are you the irresponsible fool who nearly killed my son?
Susannah appears momentarily shocked at George’s outburst, but she recovers her footing.
SUSANNAH
I drove the car, yes. But your son only has a few bumps and scratches... Dr. Kurtz said he’s going to be fine…
George comes in closer and gets right in Susannah’s face.
GEORGE
He could have been killed because of you!
Sam attempts to intervene.
SAM
Now wait one damn minute here…
GEORGE
(Turning to face Sam)
This doesn’t concern you!
LAHOMA
Mr. Cleypool, that is enough. How can you stand there and make accusations like that?
GEORGE
(Momentarily flustered)
Acc… ACCUSATIONS? Did your daughter hit my son or not?
LAHOMA
Susannah swerved to avoid something in the road.
GEORGE
Something? Oh, that’s just wonderful. You treat my son as if he’s some piece of trash or a paper cup lying in the road.
SAM
Had she not swerved, Mr. Cleypool, who knows what would have…
George whirls around to face Sam.
GEORGE
Don’t tell me you’re going to say who knows what would have happened. I know what would have happened.
He turns back toward Susannah as Jack steps off the elevator. Jack sees the commotion and can’t believe his eyes. For the moment he stays out of it.
GEORGE
This person who shouldn't be driving after having a few glasses of wine would have hit the motorcycle and killed Zachary. Why are you even driving??
SUSANNAH
Mr. Cleypool, your son is fine. He's...
GEORGE
(Raises his voice again and yells at Susannah)
No thanks to you! He's in a hospital bed because you didn't see him? DIDN'T SEE HIM?? How could you not see...
Jack decides he’s had enough. He comes into the waiting room area.
JACK
Well, well, George. I see you’re at it again.
GEORGE
What the hell are you doing here? Don’t tell me you know these people.
JACK
Well, golly George… I was going to say if you care to browbeat my friends, at least have the common decency to yell at a defenseless woman, wouldn’t you?
Jack gives George a sarcastic grin, and Susannah turns toward Jack.
SUSANNAH
Jack, I can take care of...
JACK
Susannah, there is no defense against someone like George Cleypool.
Jack approaches George, eyes narrowing. It is clear he and George definitely don’t like each other, much less being in each other’s company.
JACK
I believe you know your son is okay and that he swerved to avoid the car. Which was driving in a straight line and Susannah was not drunk. They were all fine and walking a straight line when I left the restaurant.
GEORGE
Wow, Jack. Plying your friends with a little booze and liquor. Is that the only way you can get support these days?
Jack smiles and begins laughing.
JACK
Oh no, no, no. George, I’m not falling for that routine. I suggest you save your voice for someone who really needs to hear it...
Patrick has come back from the exam area and sees the commotion, but he notices it is dying down so he intervenes.
PATRICK
Are you all about finished with your discussion, if that’s what they’re calling it these days?
GEORGE
(Turns to face Patrick)
Are you about finished with your smart-aleck remarks? I swear Stanley had more class than you did. Even if his brother was a common criminal.
SAM
Damn you… Mr. Cleypool, if you have any issues you need to take up…
PATRICK
Sam, don’t worry about it. I’m used to this. Your son is asking for you, by the way. He’s been awake and alert now for the last couple hours.
GEORGE
Thank you. (Points at Susannah) You have not heard the last from me. Count on that.
George exits the waiting area, leaving Susannah a bit shaken but none the worse for wear.
SUSANNAH
Man, Jack... what did you do to upset him so much?
JACK
To hear him talk, I destroyed this town.
Light music takes over for the piano background as the picture fades to black.
We see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen as the familiar theme plays.

FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
Jack and Patrick are making sure the Lucas family is all right as we resume the scene.
JACK
Is everyone all right?
SUSANNAH
Considering I just got examined by Patrick and told everything was okay, I think so. Although I’m beginning to think I need another checkup after this go-round.
PATRICK
I think you’ll be fine. Like I said, if you feel lightheaded in the next several hours or so don’t hesitate to ring me up. (Produces his business card) Keep that handy.
SUSANNAH
Wow! I feel so honored. (Playfully pushes Patrick’s shoulder)
PATRICK
You guys have time for a little catch-up session?
LAHOMA
Sure, Patrick. Is it your break?
PATRICK
Working a shift that takes me into the overnight hours, so yes... I need a meal in me. Come... I know you've eaten, but you need to see the hospital cafeteria.
SAM
Lead the way. I’m glad we ate.
JACK
I’m going to take my leave and let you guys get caught up. Patrick, good to see you again.
PATRICK
Always a pleasure, Jack. You sure you don’t want to stay?
JACK
I’ve had my catch-up time. Now it’s your turn. In the meantime, I think a clothes pin will take care of the stench in my nostrils known as George Cleypool.
Everyone laughs as Jack bids adieu and heads to the elevator. The Lucases and Patrick head down the hall to the accompaniment of light music.
DISSOLVE TO -- Grant’s Preserve
It is a quiet night out in the Grant’s Preserve subdivision as Rose is sitting outside on the back porch of her home, overlooking the family‘s spacious backyard. Giovanni arrives home and a door slams.
GIOVANNI
Rose... Rose, honey... where is my bella?
ROSE
Out here, dear. Enjoying a nice evening, or what's left of it.
GIOVANNI
Ah, I see. (Appears in doorway) There she is.
Giovanni comes over and takes Rose by the shoulders, planting a long kiss on his wife. It is clear Viagra’s not needed here with this couple’s robust marriage.
GIOVANNI
You look as good as you did the day we met.
ROSE
Yes. I recall I was slaving over a hot stove at the college cafeteria wearing just jeans and a T-shirt?
GIOVANNI
Oh, you know better than that. (Sits down) You were working at the pizza parlor just off campus. I came in and ordered a pizza with anchovies, mushrooms and sausage... And you were there with your long, dark hair tied back…
ROSE
So all these years I thought it was me, and it was the pizza. All these years I thought you couldn't resist me.
GIOVANNI
You too. (Kisses Rose) You looked so attractive with pizza sauce on the apron.
ROSE
And all these years later, here you are.
Giovanni looks around the house. Obviously only one of the three Petterino children are in Somerset, but he can’t believe the stillness.
GIOVANNI
It's a little quiet here tonight. Where's Victoria?
ROSE
I sort of encouraged her to take a pint of ice cream over to Alana's apartment.
Giovanni gives Rose a cockeyed look, as if he senses she’s trying to keep an eye on Alana.
GIOVANNI
Rose Giulia Albertson Petterino…
ROSE
Wow! I’m impressed. You haven’t called me that in months. You usually say that when you think I’m up to something.
GIOVANNI
I am. Are you trying to bribe the head nurse at Somerset Hospital to pass Victoria?
ROSE
Why, absolutely not. Alana's just talked lately about feeling a little lonely. She works long hours at the hospital and then she goes home for a bite to eat, a bed to sleep in and then she’s back at it the next day.
GIOVANNI
And this is your hint she should get out more? She’ll adjust. She should think about getting a cat... a dog... a companion to keep her company...
ROSE
Well, she DID have someone in her life, but it didn't quite work out.
GIOVANNI
I didn't say the companion had to be a male human being.
ROSE
Oh, I know. Alana can take care of herself, anyway. She's working all those hours at Somerset Hospital and Victoria really looks up to her. Besides, once Tori's up to speed, Alana's mentioned something about giving her more hours and taking some time to do other projects...
GIOVANNI
I know. Does she still harbor dreams of being Dr. Alana Singleton?
ROSE
No, she likes her nursing job. Now Tori... I think she could be a doctor in an instant.
GIOVANNI
Try again, honey. It takes how long to become a doctor?
Rose nuzzles and kisses Giovanni.
ROSE
Oh, you know what I meant...
The two turn and look at the sky as light music plays and the picture fades to black.

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
In the cafeteria at Somerset Hospital, Lahoma, Sam, Susannah and Patrick are around a table. Jack already has bid his friends goodbye for the night and returned to the condo.
LAHOMA
God, Patrick. I couldn't believe how that man acted.
Patrick sips from a cup of coffee and shakes his head.
PATRICK
George Cleypool, head of the Cleybank Corporation. He does a lot with the hospital, but he's got an awful bark. You didn't hear it from me, but I think he and his wife are estranged and that might be why he's acting like a...
SAM
Jerk?
SUSANNAH
(Laughs)
Good one, Dad. So how are your mom and dad, Patrick?
PATRICK
I just talked with Dad a few days ago. He and Mom are enjoying semi-retirement in Arizona. He's still at it, though.
SAM
Not surprising. Stanley was always a good doctor here in Somerset, and I was surprised to hear he married Teri. That happened after we left Somerset, right?
PATRICK
They wed here in Somerset. Her father had a stroke out in Arizona, and they both left Somerset to take care of him. When they were out there Mom found out she was pregnant.
LAHOMA
That must have been hell. She was over 40 when I knew her.
PATRICK
My mother was 44 when she had me. That was what was so shocking about it. They had me, and I must have been such a handful they stopped.
SUSANNAH
(Laughs)
I can understand that.
PATRICK
Hey, you already wanted my lab coat. You're pushing for the shirt, aren't you?
LAHOMA
Excuse me?
Patrick catches himself while Susannah blushes a bit.
PATRICK
Doctors' humor. Your daughter's always had the gift for the zinger where I'm concerned.
SUSANNAH
Not really. It's just good to see a familiar face. It'll make the transition to Somerset less daunting.
PATRICK
If that's the case (raises coffee cup) then I'll be glad to be of assistance.
SAM
Worth a toast to me!
The four raise their cups of coffee as light music plays into the commercial. The picture fades to black.

SCENE FOUR
FADE IN -- Petterino residence
Giovanni and Rose have gone by the staircase area, where the two are holding each other.
ROSE
You know, Tori still isn't back yet. You feel like being back in our twenties and fooling around a bit?
GIOVANNI
Just a bit? I was thinking…
Giovanni leans in and kisses Rose over and over before whispering something inaudible in her ear. The sound of it makes Rose look shocked.
ROSE
My, Giovanni, are you a naughty boy tonight. Come on up before I change my mind.
The camera dissolves to Rose kissing Giovanni as she unbuttons his shirt, and Giovanni is quick to strip Rose of the shirt she is wearing. It is obvious the couple has a healthy life outside the restaurant, which is a good thing.
Amorous music is playing, but we leave the scene before it gets too hot and heavy. The picture dissolves.
DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital
In Zachary’s hospital room, he is being held overnight for observation. George is by his son's side.
ZACHARY
Dad, I’m the one that made the mistake. I may have been in the other car's way.
GEORGE
You weren't over the limit, were you?
ZACHARY
Two scotches after dinner? Hardly. I was heading into town to meet some friends for beers and I never got there. If I didn't feel like driving back, I'd have stayed with a friend or had someone drive me back.
GEORGE
Well, Fenwick could have gotten you...
ZACHARY
Dad, Fenwick had already retired to his quarters for the night. I can take care of myself.
GEORGE
Humor me, okay? I almost lost you tonight. On top of getting divorce papers from Wendy.
Zachary gets an incredible look on his face.
ZACHARY
Well, the papers were the worst part of your night. It was only a small cycle accident. It wasn't like I crashed into a car and rolled over its roof. Dad... I know you're worried about losing me from the house too, but I'm not going anywhere.
GEORGE
Well, good thing. I need a partner in crime to assist me in my latest quest.
ZACHARY
Which is what?
We hear sinister music as the camera slowly focuses in on George’s face.
GEORGE
Making sure the one who nearly ran into you pays. Dearly.
Zachary looks at his dad with seriousness as the picture fades to black.

EPISODE 6 -- A REUNION
SOMERSET EPISODE 6
Airdate: July 21, 2008
Written by: Steve Ungrey
SCENE ONE
FADE IN -- Susannah’s car
The first scene of the day is a direct pickup of Friday's final moments, with Susannah having just swerved the car.
SAM
Susie, were you a bit shocked by his job offer?
SUSANNAH
Not so much shocked as I was flattered, Dad. Jack’s right. I need to…
Susannah’s thought is interrupted as we see a brief flash of headlights.
SAM
Susie, look out!
Susannah swerves the car just in time to avoid a head-on crash. She pulls over and stops the car.
Lahoma recovers in her seat, a little worse for the wear but otherwise all right.
LAHOMA
How much wine did you have with dinner, dear?
SUSANNAH
Mom? You’re not implying I’m drunk, are you?
SAM
Ladies, ladies! Wait a minute. Susie, you’re OK?
SUSANNAH
I certainly didn’t have enough liquor to impair my driving. I'll get out and see what happened, if anything.
Susannah gets out of the car. She looks around and then she looks back several yards. What she sees horrifies her.
SUSANNAH
My God…
There is a body lying in the street face down, next to a motorcycle that is still running and intact.
She turns the body over... and we see it is Zachary. Susannah momentarily freaks before regaining some composure.
SUSANNAH
Oh my God… what have I done?
Sam bends down by Susannah as he checks out Zachary.
SAM
Susie, is he okay?
SUSANNAH
(Checking for pulse once again) Yes, as far as I know. He’s unconscious, but he’s stirring around a bit.
Zachary regains consciousness and starts to move his head and look around.
ZACHARY
Wha… whaaa… what happened? Where am I?
SAM
Don’t move. You don’t know if you're hurt or not.
ZACHARY
Relax. I feel all right. I’m just sorry I almost crossed your path.
We see blue and red lights illuminating their faces.
ZACHARY
Oh, boy, it looks like we’ve got company.
Ominous music plays as Susannah looks up and back at Zachary, who is conscious but still a bit dazed. The picture fades to black.
We see an overhead shot of downtown as the camera is pulling away. The Somerset logo pops into position and goes toward the center of the screen as the familiar theme plays.
BILL WOLFF

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Jack’s condominium
For the first time, we see a more sweeping view of Jack’s condominium, which is located on the 24th floor of the Mutual Building and offers a grand, sweeping panorama of downtown Somerset from his patio.
His view of the town is spectacular, much like the vision he has for the community. He's looking down at the same building we saw on Friday and remembering the same piece of Glenn Miller music. His “Moonlight Serenade” is accompanied by a sip of scotch, but he’s momentarily startled by a knock on the door.
Jack leaves the patio and crosses the living room as the door knocks again.
JACK
Coming. (Hears another knock) Oh, hold your horses, whoever you are.
Jack opens the door to see Nick standing there.
NICK
Evening, Jack. Too late for a nightcap?
JACK
Well, Nicholas! Come on in. No, it’s not too late at all, I was just having one myself. I was just out entertaining my newest -- well, hopefully newest -- associate.
NICK
Someone finally answered your want ad after all these months, huh?
JACK
After doing everything but begging, pleading, cajoling and handing over half my company to this person... no, no, on a more serious note, I hope that she will come aboard. I need some help in the legal relations department.
NICK
Ah, hiring an attorney, it sounds like?
JACK
Yes. And someone to help with my company acquisitions.
He fixes Nick a Manhattan, which is Nick’s drink of choice, and hands it off to Nick.
JACK
Her name is Susannah Lucas. If she sticks around and comes aboard, there’s a good chance you’ll eventually meet her. And hey, she might even be worthy of your time and maybe your arm to walk her around Somerset.
NICK
What did I tell you about playing matchmaker, Jack Martin?
JACK
Just that you have to climb back on the horse eventually, even if the last bucking bronco left you with a shattered hip and broken bones and stuff. By the way, what brings you around these parts for a nightcap?
NICK
I was just headed home myself. Thought I'd stop by to see if you were around.
JACK
Well, good! Join me on the patio, my friend.
The two walk towards the patio with glasses in hand.
JACK
It’s actually a nice night out for the middle of summer.
NICK
I can’t complain. Central Illinois is always nice this time of year.
JACK
Are you looking forward to Thursday?
Nick’s mood instantly deteriorates at thinking of the trip he is taking.
NICK
The convention. (Raises one finger and circles it around) Yippee. Whoo-hoo.
Jack feigns mock indignation.
JACK
Nicholas Barclay, this is how you're going to make yourself known outside of Somerset. You've got a bright future ahead of you. It's called mingling. Mixing. Networking.
NICK
For that U.S. Senate job that may never come open?
JACK
You don’t know unless you try.
NICK
Well, Mike Wagner has said to me that his sources think I’d make a good political candidate. I could see myself making like Robert Redford.
Nick changes the subject.
NICK
Speaking of... I hear you talked to Mike earlier today about Project X?
JACK
That’s not what it’s called.
NICK
All right, then stop me if I’m warm. The Manhattan Project? Operation Bulldozer? Wrecking Ball Blues?
JACK
(Laughs)
Now you’re being sarcastic.
NICK
Well, what do you want me to do? Swallow a cyanide capsule and don't tell a soul what I know?
JACK
That would be very bad for your career prospects, my friend.
NICK
It beats being in limbo.
JACK
Now come on. Will you just relax? I'll let you know in due time. Mike doesn't know anything yet either.
NICK
Well, let me make another mean Manhattan and I'll hear you out.
As Jack and Nick head back to the wet bar, light music plays and we change scenes.
DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital
Susannah is on an exam table lying down, waiting to be seen by a doctor in the emergency room. She’s growing a little impatient that no one is around.
SUSANNAH
What the heck do you have to do to see a doctor around here? If this is how HMO's are going to be...
LAHOMA
Relax, would you? Nothing's going to happen. But honey, I have to ask something. Why were you so quick to have the officer administer a Breathalyzer on you?
SAM
It's called being smart, Lahoma. She blew a .04. She’s had a few drinks, but that’s not even close to intoxicated levels. She had three glasses of wine. By offering to take the breath test now it completely cancels the case the motorcyclist might have against Susie.
LAHOMA
(Turns with surprise)
Since when do you monitor your daughter's drinking habits?
SAM
Lahoma, we all had three glasses! Jack brought a second bottle of wine out for us, but we all had so much food that it muted the effects of the alcohol somewhat.
A doctor enters the room to check Susannah, but his face is buried behind a clipboard.
DOCTOR
And is this the patient I’m supposed to examine?
SUSANNAH
Look around, Doc. Do you see anyone else in here?
DOCTOR
Well, well. I see we have a patient here who…
The doctor uncovers his face and Susannah, Lahoma and Sam’s faces all smile at seeing him.
DOCTOR
Is all grown up.
Sam shakes his head.
SAM
Well, I’ll be damned. How many doctors are there in Somerset Hospital and she draws you?
DOCTOR
Not just any doctor. (He smiles and shows off his name tag) Patrick Kurtz at your service.
Susannah smiles at Patrick as light music plays and the picture fades to black.
We'll return to Somerset in just a moment.

FADE IN -- Jack’s condominium
Jack and Nick are on Jack's couch watching a baseball game on TV and enjoying cocktails.
NICK
I wish the Yankees would do a little better this year.
JACK
Hey, they’re trying. The team that could be one to watch is Boston. Would you root for them in a World Series once again?
NICK
(With a bad accent) I could sip a little chowdah in Havahd Yard. Then again, where I'm at I better root for the Cubs or White Sox.
Jack nearly spits out his drink laughing.
JACK
A Boston-ite you are not. Leave the accent to the Kennedys. Hey, maybe you could see Washington’s team when you’re there later this week.
NICK
Wish I could, but they’re playing the Marlins in Florida. Maybe I’ll head someplace and watch it if I need to clear my head.
JACK
Do that. All work and no play makes Nick a dull politician.
NICK
(Sips drink)
I think I’m already there.
JACK
Well, don’t worry about it. Single or not, you’ll be busy real soon. I'm about ready to unveil some details of my project. I don't want too many people aware of what's going on, though. Don't want the enemy camps to get any ideas.
NICK
I know. Can't let Cleybank Corporation get the upper hand, right?
JACK
Not just George. There are a few others in Somerset who would like nothing more than to capture my ideas and make them my own.
He takes a drink from his glass and changes his demeanor, eyes steeled with determination.
JACK
And I, for one, won't stand for it.
NICK
Well, neither will I.
Jack’s phone rings once again.
JACK
Hold that thought. (Picks up phone) Hello?
Jack’s mouth drops open. Nick turns around and instantly suspects something is wrong.
JACK
Holy… are you guys okay? (Pauses) No, I’ll be right down, the hospital’s not far from me. Thanks for letting me know.
Jack puts down the phone and runs to grab his jacket.
NICK
(Rises from couch)
Hold that thought until later?
JACK
Yes. My dinner guests from this evening were involved in a minor accident on the way back. I want to go down and make sure they're all right.
NICK
Go. Get outta here. I'll head home and get a good night's sleep. We'll talk later.
JACK
Nicholas, pleasure as always. Thanks for understanding.
The two leave Jack’s condominium and head for the elevator as music plays underneath the scene.
DISSOLVE TO -- Somerset Hospital
Sam, Lahoma and Susannah are startled to see it is Patrick Kurtz who has come to examine Susannah. Patrick, the son of Stanley and Teri Kurtz, has been a doctor at Somerset Hospital for the last decade ever since he came back to town, just like Susannah did.
Patrick gets hugs from Lahoma and Sam and a hug and kiss from Susannah before he settles down to business.
PATRICK
So I’m in my office and imagine the shock I get when Taylor tells me who was just brought in here.
SUSANNAH
I’m fine. I swear everything’s all right.
PATRICK
Relax. Your prelim tests check out just fine. You didn’t hit anything. It’s Zachary that’s in rougher shape.
LAHOMA
Patrick, how bad is he?
PATRICK
(Smiles)
Oh, relax. It’s not too bad. He took a pretty bad spill on the pavement when he swerved to avoid you guys, but he’s going to pull through just fine.
SUSANNAH
What a relief that is. I couldn’t imagine how I’d feel if something worse happened.
Patrick gets a sheepish look on his face.
PATRICK
This is the part of the job where I have to tell Mommy and Daddy to leave the room for a bit. I want to look at Susannah.
LAHOMA
How much of a look do you want?
SUSANNAH
(Her head rises from the table)
Mother!
SAM
(Laughs)
Methinks the wine has gotten to Lahoma. We’ll be outside.
PATRICK
It’s nothing major. In fact, Susie, you can sit up.
SUSANNAH
Finally! Thank you.
Sam and Lahoma leave the room while Susannah sits up on the gurney, with light music taking us into the break. The picture fades to black.
We’ll return to Somerset in just a moment.

SUSANNAH

PATRICK
Hey, just be lucky you ended up with my bedside manner. Now then...
Patrick produces a stethoscope.
SUSANNAH
(Smiling)
Are you always this forthright with your patients?
PATRICK
Hardly. In fact, I won’t ask you to strip. Just the top button will do.
SUSANNAH
Well, all right. If you insist.
Susannah undoes the top button on her dress, enabling Patrick to briefly get a listen to Susannah’s heart at the same time he’s taking her blood pressure.
PATRICK
You happy to see me?
SUSANNAH
Why would you say that?
PATRICK
Because it‘s beating a little fast. Did you know that?
SUSANNAH
Relax, Dr. McDreamy. It’s not you. It’s a combination of several glasses of wine, almost being in a car crash, wondering how he was doing…
Susannah’s face relaxes and then she smiles.
SUSANNAH
But yes, part of me is glad to see you.
PATRICK
Well, good. Everything else is checking out fine. You're alive... You're good to go.
SUSANNAH
(Buttons her dress once again) I am?
PATRICK
Yes. Did you want to stay here? You're not dizzy... no headache... pulse is normal... I'd say everything' s good. But if you feel anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to come back here.
SUSANNAH
All right. Now when do I see you out of the white coat?
PATRICK
(His face snaps up from the clipboard)
I beg your pardon?
SUSANNAH
Hey, you asked me to undo one button. I think I should have the coat.
PATRICK
Can you spare me my shirt underneath? If you guys can stick around a bit I have a break for food coming and I'd love to see why you guys are in Somerset.
SUSANNAH
I think I can spare your shirt, although as I recall from our teen years you look pretty good without one…
Patrick’s face is getting a little flushed.
SUSANNAH
Now who’s hot and bothered? (Laughing) Well, I'm here to stay. It's Mom and Dad who are leaving tomorrow.
PATRICK
(Nods head) I'm impressed. I'll sign off on your chart.
SUSANNAH
Good deal.
Susannah hears commotion from the hallway. She quickly gathers her purse and leaves the room, only to see Sam and Lahoma engaged in a spirited conversation with another man.
The man, who turns out to be George Cleypool, turns around, veins ready to pop out of his neck. He takes his wrath out on Susannah.
GEORGE
(Yelling)
Are you the irresponsible fool who nearly killed my son?
Susannah is shocked, while Sam and Lahoma have frustrated looks on their faces, as the picture fades to black.

BILL WOLFF
This… is Somerset.

SCENE TWO
FADE IN -- Jack’s condominium
COMMERCIAL BREAK
(We see “My So Called Life” title card)
Kyle experiences a memorable session with Dr. Grandon on the latest episode of My So Called Life; Return to Three Rivers. Part of the Daytime Royalty lineup, airing weekdays.
(We see “Somerset” title card and hear a soft version of the theme)

SCENE THREE
FADE IN -- Jack’s condominium

SCENE FOUR
FADE IN -- Somerset Hospital
We pick up with Susannah and Patrick alone in the ER.
SUSANNAH
Obviously I’d hoped to surprise you under better circumstances than this.

Patrick produces a stethoscope.
